: topless or ne?
SSIIprop 09-18-2002, 08:28 PM Just wondering how many of you guys have a top on your off road rigs. I have a soft top and doors on my SSII of course but have a cut off traveler top on my new 118" off road Scout project. I'm wondering if i should run a full traveler top or a terra top, or keep what i have and build a full cage covering the back as well as the front.
fatkid 09-18-2002, 09:17 PM Topless, wind shield less, door less, floor less, Come Awnn.
Ben Segrest 09-18-2002, 10:08 PM No rocks for me, but I usually run topless. Way easier to see. Though it didn't help me this morning. I got stuck at about 6:45 this morning. Made some knee deep ruts and scraped out a trough with my diff. with 235/75/15s.
snoop dogg 09-18-2002, 11:28 PM topless, you gotta love it...also no doors, or half doors
uglyscout 09-19-2002, 07:22 AM Ask yourself these question.
1) Do I drive it down the street or around town?
2) Do I drive it to the trail?
3) Do I bash the crap out of it on the trail?
4) Do I care if the interior gets wet/muddy/snonwy once in a while?
If you don't answer YES to any of the above questions ditch the top! If you answer yes to 1 of them - fab up a custom chop top. If you answer yes to 2 or more you need another Scout for the trails. If your really gonna wheel it the top is gonna have to come off, and so will most of the doors. They just get in the way.
I run a chopped hard top and full doors - BUT I live in MN so it gets cold and WET alot. No top or door would be suicide.
JoshC 09-19-2002, 07:55 AM I'm speachless. I can't even find words to describe how fuking lame this post is.
I'm looking around.... This looks like the PBB, but it smells and tasts like a fuking shopping mall, or a day spa, or a hair dresser, or a.... I don't know. This is so fuking :rainbow:
RustoleumWhite 09-19-2002, 08:06 AM Primary wheeling top is a Bikinii top.
In the winter, full soft top.
If its mild (i.e. not too hot/harsh sun, roll up the bikinii and no top. If I got the soft top on, sides are *usually* rolled up. Bikinii top keeps m eMUCH cooler on the REALLY hot days, shade is nice.
I hate the full hard tops, heavy, throws your COG off, visibility sucks.
New rig will have a steel 1/2 cab for the winter/rain. Stay nice and tosty and dry and not too heavy. Good for driving and camping as well, and it can always be removed at camp.
Debating a canvas 1/2 cab as well, ala Bill T.
Full door in the winter, and/or 1/2 doors with some sort of cover and removable window.
If its on the trailer: bikinii, doors optional (or 1/2 doors when I get them done)

then why you reading it?!??

tsm1mt 09-19-2002, 08:31 AM I run a soft-top, steel doors, on mine. I'd run the hardtop half-time, but it seems it'll no longer fit without taking a hammer to the top to match the "sculpted" lines of my SII tub..
Our prime wheeling is in the dead of winter.. and -20 with a Bikini top doesn't work too well.
Bikini is only good down to 10-20deg. I've driven through McDonalds with an inch of snow on me and the rest of the interior. :D
Even in the summer I don't get to run the bikini on the trails that often - we get high enough that even if it's halfway warm when we start, by the time we reach the top of the mountain it's cold and the wind is blowing.

I hate the visibility with the my soft-top - can't see sh*t behind/to the side of me thanks to the scratched windows. :D

The Scout that lives on the trailer runs no windshield, no doors, no interior, and a bikini top - though the top comes off when towing. Seems to be a bit hard on the bikini tops that way, so I take it down for the tow and put it on when I get there.
Rock Tractor 09-19-2002, 10:33 AM Build a cage and mount your hard top upside down on it. That way when you roll it you can crawl inside and contemplate your dumbass question.
SSIIprop 09-19-2002, 10:52 AM I'm running a cage anyway, I shouldve mentioned that...and i gotta drive this thing to the trail, dont have the $$$ for a tow rig yet.

I am toying with some sort of cheap, clear plastic to run from the back of my front cage to the floor to use when I don't have passengers. Just something to keep the cold air from swirling in against the back of my neck A few strategically places snaps, some thin mil clear plastic,....... Haven't gotten serious about it yet, too nice out still.
I usually just turn up the collar on my coat, put my gloves on, and call it good. If I wanted comfort, I would buy an SUV.

Are you saying the Hooper Scout isn't an SUV??
When I was poor and had only the bikini top, I bought a piece of.. 3/16? 1/4? plexi-glass. 3'x2', about $35, IIRC.
Had them drill two holes in the upper corners. I put a bolt through the holes and used that as an attachment point.
I then hung this piece of plexi in the rollbar. Hit the back of the front bench, and was fairly tight to the top of the rollbar. I used bungees. :D
Kept that cold wind off the back of my neck, which was the important thing.
Also found that if I folded the back seat down (but not tumbled) I could set the plexi so it sat against the rear seat, making a dry shelf to put stuff on, and still kept most of the wind off me.
Funny.. I was just about to make a joke about buying a second vehicle since it was cheaper than a soft-top.. and realized.. I *DID*.
Paid $200 for my used Soft-top.. and $200 for my daily driver Travelall / sometimes tow-rig :D

Define sport utility. Somehow I think the Hooper Truck would be offended to be lumped in with all the grocery getters as an SUV...
I like the plexiglass, but it would not roll up out of the way when I took it off. The flexible plastic could get rolled and stored in a tube so it would not get beaten up...
I am thinking that it might be as easy as cutting the plastic to the correct length, fastning to the front SSII hoop (rides just above and to the rear of the roll bar), tucking it inside the seat before the seat is layed down and rolled up, lay the seat down, roll it forward to pull it tight....
Who knows, I might screw around with it and see how it worked out... Maybe fasten a pc of flat plate to the bottom edge to get sandwiched inside the seat, to pull it even and tight....

It says right on the Door Frame "MPV".
Can't think of a better description for an IH, and the Hooper Truck isn't an SUV, along with the rest of the IH family.
Multi-Purpose-Vehicle. No "Sport":barf:
"Sport"=:rainbow: in my book

Where on the door? I'm looking... don't see it anywhere. Oh, wait, I don't have a door, guess that is it.... ;)
I'll take multi purpose vehicle... ;)
Ben Segrest 09-20-2002, 09:29 PM I don't know what they are called exactly, but they make a deal for heeps that is made out of soft top fabric and has a window in it. It's got a bunch of straps that wrap around the rollbar so that it makes a wall there (basically what yall are talking about making). My buddy has a CJ-7 that has one in it. I pulled it out of his one day and half assed put it in my Scout. It seemed to fit pretty well. There is also a rail or something that attaches to the floor so that you can get it reasonably tight. Not sure on the price, but I've been contemplating trying to find one of these for myself. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I think steel horse makes them, if you're wonderign about the quality.
Bet any place than makes soft tops (or boat tops) could make a 1 peice bikini that would pivot around the roll bar, and attach to the floor. then you'd just have to seal up the sides.
don't think you can make it airtight.

Snoopy 09-20-2002, 10:43 PM I ask myself a few questions before making big decisions...
1) Do I live in the ThunderStorm capital of the US ~ YES
2) Do I live in an area where it snows ~ YES
3) Do I have stuff I don't want stolen ~ Yes
4) Will Doors and a top allow me to have heat ~ YES
I think the answer is obvious ~ I no longer have a top or doors...:D ;) :p :) :D

So, if a topless doorless Scout II with inserts is called an SSII, which stands for either Super Scout II, or Safari Scout II (I prefer the former, not the latter), then would that make you a Super Scout I, or SSI?

I was always under the impression that it was Soft Safari....
SSIIprop 09-22-2002, 07:18 AM Actually I have one of those Windjammers. I ran it after My SSII was my daily driver and before my full soft top came in. Its for a YJ and I think it fits a Scout rollbar as well as it would a Jeep. They are like $65 I think.
jhama78 09-25-2002, 04:20 AM Hey whats up Mark? I guess ya got the traveler a little closer to getting on the trail now huh? What all have you accomplished so far? Post up some pix when ya get a chance. Take it easy man.

SSIIprop 09-25-2002, 07:32 AM I havent gotten too far yet...just taken seats out really. Been REAL busy with school. I'm gonna try to take it to a buddies shop for a 4.10 gear D44/D60 swap over fall break in a couple of weeks. Its just gonna be a while before I can work on it.

That thing should be pretty sweet when you are done with it. Have you done anything else to the drivetrain i.e. tuneup etc...? DId you have any problems getting it titled?
-j-rOd
SSIIprop 09-25-2002, 12:57 PM Other than changing the trans fluid and filter I havent touched the drivetrain. Its a little cold natured but it drives well enough around the block. I havent had time to title it yet...but i dont plan on driving it until after the new tires, axles, brakes are on. :)
jhama78 09-26-2002, 04:31 AM Im glad to hear that somebody is getting some use out of that thing. I honestly didnt have the time to build it for one and didnt really have a surplus of parts laying around for it like I do for all the yotas I got. Anyway good luck with it!!

p.s.- Didja take the liftmasters stickers off of it or are ya leavin them on doing some advertising down south for us?? :D
