: XJ-MJ w/ GM 4.3L Vortec
Rocked 09-13-2009, 01:24 PM im looking for ideas. Or for imput for people who have made this swap. Pitures are worth a thousand words :)
my plan is to swap a 96+ 4.3L CSPI engine mated to a 96+ 4L60E. Run the Novack Conversions adapter to mate my NP231. Rebuild a crossmember/trans mount. Also reinforce the unibody and build motor mounts and other nessary mounts.
I will be retubeing drivelines acordingly. As well as reworking Tcase linkages im assuming. Planing on running an artcarr shifter an Lokar dipstick.
Howell Fuel harness managment system and ECU with autometer gauges
EZwire harness for my electical
The things im still researching are:
-will i have to rework the stock steering linkage and box (89MJ)
- overall lenght of a 4.0L and AW4 trans
- overall lenght of a 4.3L vortec and 4L60E trans plus the 3" gained w/ the Novack adapter
- basicly how well will it fit the engin compartment and trans tunnel
-Determining cooling configuration. what applacations to use. or if aftermarket is the way.
Thanks for any ideas, mention of things iv over looked or pictures. tim
[Memphis] 09-13-2009, 01:51 PM Why the hell wouldn't you use a chevy np231? :shaking:
Rocked 09-13-2009, 02:14 PM Because I already have a NP231 with a sye kit on it. I havent researched yet, but I would guess that the cost of a new Tcase and a sye kit for it would be about the same cost as buying an adapter. I will look into this. I dont know anything about the chevy version right now.
thanks for the idea.
JeepFreak21 09-13-2009, 02:20 PM Here ya go! Same engine and trans anyway. Looks like a piece of cake. :D

Oh, sorry about that. I never noticed. It does make me feel better about all the trouble Jeff is going though though! :D

Rocked 09-13-2009, 07:35 PM I hope the V6 4.3L swap will be less drastic. Hope to be able to utalize stock axel mounts and build new ones for the beefed up unibody. I think I should have a bit more room with the V6 vs. the V8.
Skeeter Cruz 09-14-2009, 08:02 AM I must be feelings good today because I just went out to the garage at 8 in the morning in the rain to take measurements for you.
98 Blazer with the 4.3L Vortec and 4L60E.
(My project for today is ripping them both out. New Jasper engine and rebuilding the 4L60E with the Monster rebuild kit going in.)
Anyway.
Length of bare 4.3L w/no accessories or water pump: 19in.
With water pump and pullies on: 27in.
(Fan sticks out a couple more inches if you decide not to go the e fan route)
4L60E bellhousing to end of adapter for 233: 26in.
Hope this helps!
I tried a 350 swap into my 2.5L XJ and got over that really quick. Sold it and bought the Blazer that came with a driveline I liked!

Many thanks to you sir!
So 27" front to rear....dressed w/o mechanical fan. If you get it yanked today would you mind getting me a height and width mesurment at the widest and tallest points?
Again if you were able to get it yanked. Would you mind getting me some more trans mesurment on the 4L60E like height and with of the bellhousing, and the length of the matting surfaces of the bellhouseing and Tcase matting surface along the bottom?
Do you thing the V6 is going to be tight on space in the Xj engine compartment?
Also how do you thing the 4l60E is going to fit in the trans tunnel?
Thanks very much, tim
pingpong2 09-14-2009, 06:32 PM I have a TBI 4.3 in an 85 xj with a 700r4. I used Advance adapters engine mount kit, and the adapter for the trans as well. Also used Painless wiring harness. It was pretty much a breeze.
Here is a pic of what I would consider a "tight" spot.

The only catch with the AA kit is it moves the engine over about 2.5" to 3" so If you plan on running a passenger drop axle you will run into issues.
Rocked 09-14-2009, 07:30 PM looks like its alot less cluttered in there. Why did you keep the jeep trans? Im planning on running the GM trans and adapting the tcase with a novack conversions adapter for the 231.
Did you have any issues with suspention? and the engine or oil pan?
thanks tim
Skeeter Cruz 09-14-2009, 10:55 PM Sorry just got in today, engine isn't assembled so might have to wait on the widest part. I'll try to get the measurements soon though.

I bought this as a project from someone who was going through a divorce, so he had all ready purchased the adapter, otherewise I would hae just ran the Chevy 231.
The suspension has a 3" lift, and that is the minum that AA recommends if you use their frame kit.
Rhube 09-19-2009, 07:31 PM I have a 4.3 / 700R4 / NP231 combination in my MJ. I bought it with the swap already done and the previous owner swapped in a 23 spline output shaft in the 700R4. Unfortunately, the trans case cracked near the mount (seems to be a weak spot) so I found a rebuilt one for cheap and went with that, but it had the 27 spline output. Instead of tearing into the transmission to change out the output shaft, I ran to the junkyard and picked up a NP231C out of a S10/Blazer (along with the t-case adapter/mount). Not wanting to loose the SYE already on my NP231J, I just combined the front half of the NP231C case with the rear of the NNP231J case....simply unbolt, separate halves, and bolt back together. Works great!
DamageControl 01-16-2010, 10:53 AM How's your engine swap coming along? I just started swapping in a 4.3 TBI and 700R4 in my 89 XJ. I am building the mounts, rather than buying. I have about 5 inches from the distributor to the firewall. The trans mount is about 3 inches forward of the factory auto mount. But since I'm building a new crossmemeber and ditching the Rusty's Long arms, it's not a problem. I raised mine as close the the hood as I could. But with the S-10 oil pan having such a small sump, I don't foresee any clearance issues. Plus I plan on moving my axle forward 2-3 inches once the swap is finished. :D

What headers are you using? I just got my 4.3 bolted in today, and both sides are tight with factory 92 S-10 blazer manifolds. Yours look like they run over the top of the exhaust ports, rather than under... Was there much room to build the head pipes?
