OK, how would you, or could you, and should you, fit a Ford 81-85 Dana 50 axle shaft and u-joint 282x within a Dana 44 axle? (old Dana 60 u-joint also 282x)

Top axle 79 F250 ... 5-297x U-joint
middle 85 F250 ... 5-282x U-joint
Bottom 78 F150 .... 5-297x U-joint
I was looking at fitting the middle U-joint into a Dana 44 axle. Thats measuring 2 /14" deep and 3 3/4" across.

edit; Changed Bottom 78 F150 .... 5-287x U-joint to 297

IF (big IF) the yoke is centered it will clear and be able to rotate. After all you just need a little clearance to make it work!

This is assuming your running the Ford 5 hole knuckle.

Hmm, would a Chevy 8lug knuckle allow free rotation? Not shure if chevy used a larger u-joint with thier 3/4 ton rigs..

The spindle bolt pattern is on a 4" circle (Chev for sure, Ford??). You get 3 1/2" I.D. (rubbing threads). And you wanna squeeze a 3 3/4" wide U-joint in there?? Hmmmm.
Nice try tho, I was thinkin the same thing a while ago.:D
D60 spindle bolt pattern is on a 5 1/4" circle.

D60 spindle bolt pattern is on a 5 1/4" circle. Ok, the measure ment is closer to 4 1/4". And since the U-joint is an external clip, you can grind some off of the yoke. Yes it will only work if the joint is centered, but for argument sake lets take two directions.

1: It will work, the yoke will fit in between the the two ball joints.

2: Ok, it just hits. THe knuckle will not work. What about getting a D60 knuckle? Weld that on the tube.

In 73 they used 73.5 - 75 they used the 5-309x u-joint. In 76-77.5 they used a 5-297x U-joint, however the outer shaft was 3/4 longer. (All in the non-HD Dana 44) What does this mean? The 5-297 may fit (I think it does) but you might need customs shaft to make it work. I don't think the larger Dana 50 u-joint I have pictured, or the larger HD Dana 44 u-joint will fit.

why ruin a perfectly good 60 when you can put IT under the rig and have a BIGGER u-joint?

-scott I guess you didn't know you can buy Dana 60 inner knuckles, ball joint type.

If you go to all that trouble why would run a 5-282x U-joint instead of the larger 5-332x

1 custom shaft vs. 4 custoim shafts. Follow the Money, cuz I ain't gots much. and If you broke could always go to custom 33 splined shafts and 5-332x joints.
