I've seen the TJ fuel cell install and pretty much figured it to be the most economical way to stretch the TJ without dropping $900 on the Genright tank (nothing wrong with it, just cheap). The one question I have for those that have done it is what about fumes/leaks inside the cab. I am keeping my backseat and will be running a top occasionally and am worried about this problem. Where are the possibilities for leaks? Vent? Filler neck? This is my only real concern with doing this mod.

You shouldn't have any leaks anywhere as long as you plumb everything correctly. I ran a hard top and doors on my Jeep for a while when I wasn't wheeling it and the only times that I had fumes in there were when I spilled gas filling it up.

Cool, thanks for the info. What are the chances of spillage from a cell during a flop/rollover? I am just worried about goofing up and dumping gas all over my son in the backseat.:shaking:

I've flopped mine a few times since I installed the fuel cell and I've had zero spillage.

Mine was on it's lid for 20mins and not a drop. You just need to run the vent correct.
The first one I hard mounted to the floor and after 2yrs of hard wheeling one of the corner welds broke. This time it is rubber mounted and braced.

That's good to hear. I thought about sinking it into the tub so I could still use the filler on the outside but my body work skills are sub-par.

I had a local shop build me a custom steel tank years ago for my TJ, it was built to fit inside factory (hide a trunk) in back of rear seat, in order to keep it in the trunk and get almost 17 gal. it sat about 4" below floor, so my rear floor was cut out, this worked OK since I had the hide a trunk sealed pretty good, the filler stuck out of the trunk lid (when soft top was folded, it would lay just above filler cap and I could fill it by just moving the canvas a bit
All TJ's are closed systems, later model ones are more complicated
*BUT they will burp fumes and a little seepage can happen in some circumstances
I have smelled fuel with soft top sealed up only a few times but it has happened and if a child or GF was in there it may of bothered them, now it was no big deal for me as the top will be down or off most times and I won't have children in the rig much
My tank has the original type rollover valves and even a TJ filler neck welded to it, I have tried 2 different caps and they both burped, it all passes strict Phx. emission testing
the filler caps are like radiator caps that take in and let out pressure in extreme situations like when 1/2 full and a lot of bouncing causing aeration and high pressure that the charcoal canister and emission valves etc. can't handle
having kids in Jeep a lot, I would be very care full with how you do this, mostly worry of what would happen in rear end collision :mad3: FIRE etc. not fun. no matter how you cut it, its not as safe as it being outside
if your going to do it, try to enclose it as much as possible, the guy who built mine charged like $700, very high quality and tough, high price but when it was built there was no gen-rite or other options

on rollover spillage,
should not leak if roll over valves and factory type cap is used, if its built correct and not damaged you should be OK
