: '72 Chevy diesel build

Heres a start to my extremely mild '72 chevy truck build. History: This truck started out as a 1/2 ton long bed 4x4 that I got form a junk yard that was fixing to crush it. I had an old '86 m1008 that has been cut up and modded to be a crewcab shortbed taking up way too much room in front of the house. The plan is to swap my turboed 6.5, nv4500/205 and 60/14 bolt into the '72 and have a cool get to work/hunting truck to keep from running up the miles on my '09 dodge CTD. I should have taken pics of the truck before the build started, but as it sits now, I have the 6.5 turbo and axles in the truck, and the frame chopped to fit a short stepside. I have the hydroboost modded to fit the firewall and a hydro clutch master cylinder installed. Been using implement spray paint to paint the firewall and underbody so that I can get the truck all put back together before I shoot it with IHC red. Heres a few pics.

you gonna paint the whole truck in the red? looks good like theres no peel to it.
you gonna lift it and throw some bigger rubber under it?

I dunno about lifting it yet, I have plenty of 4 wheeling toys. 1980 blazer 454 TBI,Th400/205, 60/14 locked with 35"sx's. 1950 willys M38 on custom frame, 4.3 TBI,sm420/dana300,35" krawlers, 60/14. 1953 CJ3a stock with granny 4spd. 2006 jeep rubicon stock(wifes daily driver). 2009 CTD 4x4 6spd(my daily driver for now). Since i'm so 4x4 poor, i dont know whether i'll lift it or not. It all kinda depends on how my dodges old 285/70/17s fit. If they dont clear good i'll either trim fenders or do a very small lift. This rig is mainly for mileage and keeping miles off my dodge, since the dodge currently gets the best mileage out of all our vehicles.

The whole truck will be IHC red since it only costs $30 a gallon, and its a nice looking color on the truck. I've kinda given up on getting all the dings out of the body, but i will be replacing both rockers and the pass cab corner due to a lil rust from all the farm dirt that was in this thing.

that truck is totally titsville man I would leave it just the way it is, painting it will just up the cool factor, you should try to keep the old logos on the door through.

Good choice on the color......Oh and TSC is the official paint supplier for about 90% of the things I build......Hard as steel and after 30 years she will still shine up like the day you painted it......

Thanks guys. Yes i have the banks kit on it. The original 6.2 broke a rod after i cranked up the fuel too much. The 6.5 turbo wouldnt fit in the '86 without alot of mods, so i just put the 6.2 kit on it. If anyone need some 6.5 turbo parts I have all the other stuff. I think it looks cool with the logos on the door too, I wish the rest of the truck matched the doors, I wouldnt even paint it.lol

Got the tranny/t-case installed today. Also got the clutch bled, starter installed, and a few other small details. No new pics today, nothing looks different except there is a tranny in it and a couple of shifters sticking out of the floor.

No a/c for me! I'll be mounting a york where the current A/c compressor is mounted on the motor. I put onboard air on my flatty, and thats got to be one of the cheapest badass mods I've ever done. This cab was originally a non-a/c cab, so i'll keep it that way. Its just a hunting/work truck anyways, and maybe gonna haul my crawling toy to the playground occasionally.

I got some more work done today. I went to the salvage yard this morning and got some decent inner fenders, a nice heater box, and a rotten battery tray. Here are some updated pics. :smokin:

that thing looks bad ass:cool:, forget painting the outside! just make everything work like new, put some 35's on it (if its a daily driver) and leave it...

I wish it had decent paint all over it, cuz I would leave it. The doors look bad ass, but they came off a truck that was in really good condition. The rockers are so rotten that i'm gonna have to cut them out and replace them so that I can get new door seals installed. The bed was sprayed orange, the hood is down to the bare metal, and the cab is teal. I just did a quick spray bomb job of black primer over dirt and all just to keep the truck from sticking out like a sore dick in the nieghborhood. I'm sure all my nieghbors thought "DAMN, ANOTHER ONE?" when I drug this home.

Truck looks great. You have know idea how lucky you are to have parts for these trucks still in the junkyards. :smokin:

Yeah, its pretty nice that these things dont rust too bad around here. Almost every junkyard around here has several of these trucks. Most are pretty well picked over, but its pretty easy to find decent doors, fenders and hoods around here.

I got the truck back up and running today. Lots of white smoke when running though, I dont know if my cold start advance was working or not, I cant remember if I hooked it up. I made a bracket to mount the 6.5 fuel filter to some of the intake bolts since I am running the 6.2 "J" intake on this rig. I still need to make a manual glow plug switch also, so I dont have to jump the wires to get it started. Progress is still slow on this thing, but maybe I will have it going before deer season is over.

might you still have any pictures of the 86 m-1008 crewcab shortbox.. im considering making my m-1008 a crewcab tower and just want to get the visual of how weird it may look..thanks

I havent done much to the truck lately, but just cruise it around to the alley and dump the trash...I still need to paint it and get the tires and wheels set up on it.

I just looked through all of my pics, and I guess I dont have a single one of that truck..(m1008 crewcab shortbed). That rig had a very short lifespan, and it had a bunch of trannys put in it through its short lived 10 month life...lol.

It looks like we are trading posts :) I have actually started the preliminary fitment of the 6.2/nv4500 into the 1971. My digital camera is busted otherwise I would have some pics up.

So it looks like you got the motor to fit. I have not been able to position the factory crossmember in any position to clear the factory pan. How did you get it to fit? Do you have any pics.

Thanks again.

i used an 80's model engine crossmember in mine

Did the crossmember bolt? Just a couple holes to be drilled or were there any unexpected challenges?

WildWilly4x4

I dont remember if any bolt hole lined up or not....I just welded the piss out of it. I also had to do some trimming on the front crossmember, which is the '72 one, to get clearance for my turbo x-over pipe. I dont think you will have this problem though, if you dont use a Banks turbo setup...i think the GM turbo stuff all crosses over behind the oil pan.
