I've quartered my last animal with a folding hand saw and I refuse to use my cordless Sawzall.

Any recommends on a quality meat saw? Type of blade? Tooth count.

my only reason for needing a saw when butchering was to cut the hoofs off when I brought the legs inside the kitchen. You should be able to strip most meat off without a saw though

Doc,

Why even bother? Use a knife to sever the legs of a deer at the knee and toss the bottom.

OP

We had an old "meat saw" in the family forever that I don't know the whereabouts of right now, but it looked much like the ones you can buy at Bass Pro. Tooth count was moderate. Not bow saw coarse, and not hack saw fine. They were shaped like triangles. Why not just use your sawzall?

cuz its faster to zip them off with a circular saw and the barn I rough butcher in isn't heated

Get you some limb loppers if you are just cutting of lower legs of game animals. If you are splitting a carcass, use your sawzall with unpainted metal blades...

Use a regular cross cut saw for legs. Most any saw will do.
I dont use a saw at all for deer.

I rough butcher hanging from a tree or my tailgate. I treat em like big squirrels, skin, cut off limbs, head etc. You usually end up with a cape and the bottom halves of the 4 legs, plus the head as a unit. Kinda like when I clean squirrels. From there the front legs/shoulders are cut off, then the backstrap, then the rear legs, the torso goes in the cooler mostly intact unless i decide to process it on the spot.

Legs are easy with a knife. I like to cut bigger animals, moose and large bear, right down the middle of the spine. I find them easier to pack out of the bush this way.

I guess I could use a cordless sawzall but it would really be a bitch if the battery died half way through the job. I think a meat saw would be easier to pack in.

Not all the game I shoot falls down next to the road.
