Ill get the offiacial rules and post up tonight. If you were legal for KOH you'll be fine for this. Also if you call Charlie at (406) 698-9536 he can get you a registration pack in the mail, even today.

The tech guy forgot to email me the regs last night and said he would get them to me today to post. For registration paperwork either call Charlie or PM me your address and we will get them mailed to you. I can see if the coordinator mids if I just post the form to print out too.

ATVs, side-by-sides, etc are ok for pre-running and race use just don't want spectators and such running around on em

Weasel

If you allow racers to use them, everyone else is going to as well. Hard to regulate it to just one group.

Looks like a group us will be heading up. :D

The items circled (on the 2009 tech sheet) is that they are going to be looking for? I see that winshield mesh/screen isnt circled. Does that mean we need or dont need those. Also does a motorcross style helmet count as full face? HAHA

the items circled are the required item and the others are recommended. Windshield screen isn't required. Motocross helmet is ok as long as its full face.

I have a couple of questions. First questions is about the registration. Its ok to pay on that friday right. It says only cash so im guessing you dont want me to send a box full of pennys. haha And on the manditory tire change. When we do that pit i hope its ok that we dont put a different tire on. I hope we can just take a tire off and lay it down and put it back on. My spare tires arent on beadlocks at this time and im sure there are people who wont have matching spare tires on would only want to run them if they had to. Thanks

The powell 4x4 club has a 3.5 mile track on 120 acres and usually holds 2-3 races a year. We have had a few mx and atv guys want to an endurance type race too and we are all game for it but they never get organized to put something on. Might be something that will happen in the future.

for the driveline hoop i was going to copy the BITD rules and use a limit strap around the driveline. I hope that will work. I figure if its good for score and BITD i hope it will work for this.

09-23-2009, 12:30 PM
Charlie said guys use 1" strap of steel on the rear shaft, and just run a limit strap around the front shaft...

Im hoping to send em pics so they can sign off (assure me I can pass tech) before the drive down.

Joey

crewchief
09-23-2009, 01:06 PM
Hmm thats wierd you have to do the front. Score and BITD dont require the front to have a hoop. And they pass a limit strap around the rear. My buggy has too much travel to put a hoop around the front of the front driveline. I could do the rear of the front. And i wont even be running mine it 4wd prob. And i was taking my driveflanges out and putting hubs on so the shaft wouldnt even be spinning.

MNorby
09-23-2009, 01:21 PM

MNorby

GiS
09-24-2009, 08:24 AM

Thanks Norby, let me know what the tech guys think,

MNorby
09-24-2009, 10:01 AM
Basically he said it needs to be at least 12" from the axle u-joint on front driveshaft and at least 12" from t-case/transmission u-joint on rear driveshaft.
Basically to prevent a pole-vault type senario in case of driveshaft failure.

GiS
09-24-2009, 10:37 AM
So I would need to move mine a little bit and bring them back further from the Ujoint? Just let me know and I will get back to work ....

It's tough on a high travel suspension heh, the further I go from the T-case, the larger my ugly hoop has to be to accomodate for full droop :)

Couple more questions:

Can we prerun the course? Walk the course?

How are the number selected? Just pick a random number?

Any idea of weather? Don't think it's snowed up there yet but possible, figuring 40-50's with nights in the 30's? Anywhere close?

Are winches allowed or needed? If you roll or get stuck is winching going to be allowed on the course?

I think that's about it for now. Thanks.

Yeah he was more concerned with the rear loops being to close to yoke, might nut hurt to extend the brackets back a little bit.

Pre-running will be at 10:00 that morning.
Need to have a 3 or 4 digit number on your rig is all.
Weather for the next week out is highs in the 70s. The saying out here is if you don't like the weather wait 5 minute.... Only snow here so far is in the high country.
Winching is ok if conducted off track, don't want rope streched in harms way. There will be a handful of trailrigs around the track with radios and recovery gear though so self recovery probably wont be necessary.

any idea's on number of participants yet?

No entry forms in yet but we have talked to 20-30 people about the race and are predicting most people will enter friday at tech.

This is Montana.

There are only a few thousand (am I way too high?) people living in Columbus. Shoot, probably less than 1000.

I stop in Columbus for fuel on most trips. Not a bad little place.

I'm not planning to attend. :( Too busy at work, and too tired to prep. One side is washed from the last race in Billings, and that's just because it's the windward side and it's rained a little. :D

All parts needed to go, stop, turn, and jump are functional and painted.

If the Super8 and others in Columbus books up n' such, there is a Super8 (and others) in Big Timber, 40 miles west of Columbus.

But even better, Park City is 19 miles east of Columbus, and sports a Truck Stop and a few hotels that are darn cheap.

Snowing here in Helena today.

For you hams - Repeater Map (pdf) (http://www.gallatinhamradio.com/Downloads/RepeaterMap_Apr18a.pdf) for the area.

The MRLA (http://www.wr7mt.org/) linked repeaters will get you coverage over most of the state.

It's a big place, it's snowing, and cell coverage is spotty in a lot of places.

Fat Ron is allllmmmmost done, and look'n better than ever.
Last minute details tonight, and tomorrow night. Then it gets loaded onto the trailer.
We'll be leaving Rapid early Friday morning.
I (think) there's about 20 "ish" people from Rapid coming up for the event.
Lots of people have been volunteering labor to make this thing happen, and nobody want to miss out on the action.

Gonna be a damn convoy headed out.

Few last minute questions:

1. Is the course well defined, or will GPS be required?
2. How accessible is the pit area. I ask because we'll be taking various people, parts, gas, etc,,,,. Is this pit area "mini-van friendly"?, or is a 4x4 required to reach the pit area.

Thanks,

MNorby

They had a road grader out there last saturday so should be well defined and Charlie was gonna gps track it with his garmin but never heard how that went.

Had an absolute blast in Montana.
Can't wait for next year's race.

I've got a wierd feeling that a few more of us will be showing up with low-buck XJ's, ready to race. Having never raced myself, I now see the appeal.
I got home last night and immediately searched craigslist and ebay for a cheap-o XJ, or anything cheap for that matter.

The weather started our really cold, then warmed up slightly, then got really cold really quickly. The warmth made for some slop, and that made for an interesting race.

I've got some poor quality videos of the landrush starts, by each class. I'll put them up later.

Again, AWESOME track and event. I can't wait for next year.:)

I wanted to thank all the racers for coming out, and all the people who made the race happen. Charlie Shaw (he was giving you your lap tickets at the start/finish line) put a ton of work in, as did several other people. I had a blast pitting (even though the truck I was pitting for broke on the first lap:shaking:)

I wanted to thank the crew that let me borrow their electric impact gun (actually threw it at me when they saw I was having problems with the air impact gun) even though I couldn't get my socket on it - too much of a hurry on my part. I was pitting on Tyler Gordon's bronco (red full size 79) at that point. They also lent me a jack when I went over to help Wes (71 2wd shortbox - red) straighten out his tie rod.
Sorry I didn't get names or even the rigs you were working on. Too much of a blur most of the day helping out various teams.

That's what I like about our racing - other teams willing to help out and let the drivers (not circumstances) decide the race on the course.

Thanks again and hope to see you next year!

The Wild West 100 was a 7 mile track, two seperate loops that merged together...A Mountain loop, think narrower trails, less passing spots...and a Meadow loop, which was wider open, and faster paced. My 190 HP 4.0L pushed me up to 53 MPH through the flats, sometimes with no tires touching the ground

There was also a mandatory pit required, you had to swap a tire, and put in atleast 5 gallons of gas. Jamie and Curty were AWESOME to have as a Pit Crew..As I skidded into the pit, I felt like a NASCAR driver..I feel the ass end of the rig lift up, hear "bzzzz, bzzzz, bzzzz" as Jamie is ripping the tire off, I can smell the fuel that Curtis is spilling everywhere as he frantically tries to fill the tank...Then "thunk", tires hit the ground and I am back to grabbin gears!

The winner of the race was in a 2 seat KOH type tube chassis, and he was only running a 4.3L...I came in second by approx 1 minute, and over a 3 hour race, I really don't think that is too bad. I am happy to have made the trip, and to have finished the race! :smokin:

I was impressed that it's not all about Horsepower....althought that is all I talked about after the race :flipoff2::flipoff2:

I just want to thank CURTIS, JAMIE and THOMAS for all their hard work and the good times we shared this weekend!! If I can ever help you guys, or return the favor, you know how to find me.

CHARLIE, DON, WES, AL HOGAN....THANK YOU ALL for all of the hardwork put in to host the race, for bundling up on race day and manning the stub check points! I will be back next year :D

And an EVEN BIGGER THANKS to Matt Norby, we all pestered him for Race Info, even tho he was just the messenger. Thank you for posting Matt, otherwise I would have never known about this race.

Flier was posted on M4x4A.org (www.m4x4a.org) though only after the flier was done - which was after the first announcement on Pirate.

I'd heard rumors about it for a while (starting around the time of the August Acton race I was at - when I found out Powell was canceling their October race because of it), but never any solid concrete information until the flier came out.

I also made sure Baker knew about it ahead of time.

Post up or pm your email and ill inform everyone about races either myself or the powell club is putting on. I also post up our info on the powell website. Generally powell always has something on memorial weekend (except 2 years ago when it was rained out and had to use 4x to get off the paved road) I don't know if Acton has a list but I think they have a website for their races, they generally do 3-4 races per summer I think.
