: shooting left handed with pistol

Since I shattered my wrist and hunting season is less than a month a way.
I am going to work on shooting pistols left handed. I'll try to remember to takr pics during the process.

Most people consider hunting with a pistol quite a challege. Due to my wrist being out of action until early November, my goal is to be proficient shooting one handed with my off hand where I feel confident enough to hunt.

The first step is bench shooting the S&W K-22 to get comfortable.

Good luck! Sounds like a good gun to start with; zilch recoil, excellent target pistol, awesome trigger pull, cheap ammo.

Gonna work up to a S&W 500, or a BFR .45-70? :flipoff2:

...BFR .45-70? :flipoff2:

sounds like a good place to start! make sure you have a buddy vid. when you can sling it like a pro then you can strap 2 of them in your cowboy leathers!

htf are you gonna hold a rifle with a busted wrist? Even just holding up the stock would hurt like hell, wouldn't it?

that is why I am getting ready for pistol shooting. I'll work my way through a J frame 357 with 38's. Eventually the 44 with lighter loads if I get that far.

I taught myself to shoot with my weak hand. It took awhile to get decent and consistant but worth learning. In my case my left wrist is messed up and its my weak hand. I wanted to be able to shoot left handed for my own protection should I need it.

I did the opposite when I busted my left wrist.

I am quasi-ok shooting my .44 Red Hawk with my right hand.

It's do-able. If anyone can, you are able.

I'm left handed but my dad taught me how to shoot right handed (I think my grandfather was left handed but being left handed back in the day wasn't acceptable...my people have been oppressed ). I shoot long guns right handed but I can shoot pistols with either hand. I've considered attempting to go duelies just for shits and giggles. If nothing else, to look cool. Don't know if I could hit anything.

I've killed pigs with a 44 mag. Best suggestion, just like with a rifle, is to shoot off a bench. DO NOT try to use your right eye to shoot. Its kinda like eating pudding with a fork: it works...but...no...not really. It'll take practice. Good luck.

BTW, "sinister" is greek for left handed :flipoff2:

Meh, I'd just do all my hunting this season at the grocery store.

Good luck.

I tried to shoot my .45 left handed just for shits and giggles. Somehow a hot piece of brass landed in my right shirt pocket and singed a nipple.

Be careful is all I'm sayin'.

It's not that hard. Align sights, and squeeze.

The thing I see from less experienced competitors is that they expect to shoot like crap, so they break the shot with a sight picture that is nowhere near centered on the A-zone.

I know you've shot enough know better than that, but when guys KNOW they're going to shoot like crap off-hand before they draw the pistol... the outcome is pretty much predetermined.

You did what to your wrist? Link?

Don't forget that you can still use your strong side eye with your support side hand.

I can shoot pistols either hand, cowboy action.
Before shooting the current category, I shot gunfighter. A pistol in each hand.
I'm talking about shooting good enough to squirrel hunt with a pistol.

Probably not gonna be an issue with a revolver :flipoff2:

Just an FYI, it's now been three months for me and I still can barely shoot two handed. I had fewer screws than you and work my hand mercilessly trying to get it all back. Be patient with yourself.

What kind of pistol do you hunt with? I hunt with a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter .44 mag, anyway, I can't do shit left handed, but I think with a good rest, I could hit a deer left handed. You at least have experience with the cowboy action thing.:grinpimp:

I busted my wrist playing basketball some years ago, took my cast off after a week. Rebroke it a couple more times and had to shoot my 82# PSE Thunderflite Express with it still broken/healing.

I did take a doe with it early season. Wasn't worth it in retrospection.

Should have taken a long slow and proper recovery. I did rehab the wrist myself.

Wrist was problematic after that for a few years. Could "pop" it and lose all strength for a day or so.............could happen anytime.

Took a painful year of guitar to erase all the previous problems. Worked out great (eventually).

(no screws in my wrist, lunate and scaphoid carpals busted).

That's a heavy fawkin' gun to be shooting one handed. Torques the shit outta your wrists, too.

I'm currently learning to shoot left handed...I know this sounds stupid but I before comfortable again around loud bangs I went to video arcades and learned to shoot just to get the feel of a trigger again and I did it til my hand was tired, give it a break, then start over. There was one game in particular that had a gun where the slide actually came back and everything on it every time you shot. I shot my brother-in-law's Sig 226 40 cal. last Sunday and did OK...you could definitely tell i haven't shot in awhile. Just a little food for thought.

Also, I have found the only gun with an ambidextrous slide release is the S&W M&P, i bought it 9mm...great gun i think...

It is heavy as hell, but I loaded a bunch of 300gr Hornady SXT(?) at near max powder charge for elk hunting a few years ago, and when resting the gun on the edge of a deer stand, I've found it has more of a push than a kick when fired. It seems to me that some of my loads with a lighter bullet produce more recoil than the 300gr load.
