: My M1009 CUCV 1 ton and 52/63 Build thread

Plans are
Suspension
-52" rear springs up front with DIY4X B52s and a few leafs removed and a 7.25" shackle
-Possibly a 4* shim depending on caster angle
-63" rears I pulled out of a obs chevy with DIY4X shackle flip also with leafs removed and a 6" shackle

Steering
-I have some 1.5" .250 DOM with 7/8" Hex tube inserts, 14tpi left and right hand threads
- 7/8" Ballistic Fab rod ends with High Mis spacers. All go from 7/8" down to 5/8" but the joint at the end I have drilled out the pitman arm to 3/4". So I have a 7/8" to 3/4" high mis spacer there.
- I have some Blue torch Fab rod end high steer arms That I milled to accept ballistic Fabs high miss spacer that were on my truck once. I am still debating on weather to go highsteer like on my truck, but might have oil pan clearance issues staying so low.
-I will have a 2wd box for Xover steering and i will tap the 2wd box
-Since I am trying to stay fairly cheap, I will be running PSC lines with a surplus center or PSC ram
- I will be staying with the stock pump and adding some radiator hose for a longer filler neck. I will also do the west texas offroad mod for a bit more pressure.

Axles
- I scored a free 14 bolt off FSC from a local guy with 4.10s and in decent shape. I built a 14 bolt cover for it from Copperhead fab, which was decent product but they cut one of the plates 1/2" to short so I plasma cut another peice to make up the difference and its not even noticable.
- On the axle I will be Inboarding the rear shocks, Using some Ballistic Fab disk break brackets for disk brakes in the rear. I also have their pinion gaurd.
- I will also post some pics of the spring perches I build later.

-As for the Dana 60, I posted up a ad on Craigslist *wanted chevy 60* and a week later I got a bite. I wound up being in the same major and me and the guy actually had a class together last year. So we worked out a trade. I traded him my old Mile marker 10.5 Hydraulic winch and some 4" shackles from ORD and he gace me the Dana 60 and the 56" rears. (he is moving to 2.5 rocks) I have a SOLID D60 cover I will be using for it.

Front shock setup will be modified ford shock towers.

That is the basics, so on with some pics

Day I towed it home off the Military base in huntsville alabama

Changed the fluids, cut some fender...And had to go test it out on the New 36" Iroks I had for it

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/IMG_1061.jpg

Cleaned it that night and next day was some body work time. I pulled out all the Military radio shit, ground down the floors, installed a radio with 2 6.5" speakers in the doors. I used Hurculiner and it has not held up for shit. So it will be all getting removed and Durabak will be used...MUCH better product.

Ok so today was the First day off I had In a while. So I left early this morning to go to the You-pull-it in search for some 56 or 63" rears and a passenger side door to make into a half door. All the passenger side doors they had were extremely rusty so that was a No go. And the first truck I came up upon was a 96' silverado that was wrecked in the front and had the rear end already pulled out of it and was still in the air. It had lowering homebrew crap shackles on the springs so I removed them quite easily and cost me 25 bucks for both. On with the pics of today, Tomorrow I will yank he rear out of the blaze and start grinding and air hammering rivets.

Not sure why I never thought of this before, I bought this thing 5 years ago for hurricanes and never used it. So now the garage is AC when doing stuff that does not require adequate ventilation.

Didnt do a lot today, I welded up some 14ff perches and drilled one hole in the middle and one offset 1.5" to move the axle forward some. I also painted the entire underneath rear of the blazer. I then went and picked up My D60 and a steering rockwell. I have to rebuild the rockwell for a buddy and weld some bracketry on it for him.

I will run a fuel cell if the 14ff has clearance issues on uptravel. I did a little work today. It is coming, slow, but gettting done....Working several jobs, full time student...Blah it sucks. But here are some updates

Welded on the other hanger tonight, found pinion angle, decided to run some different shackles, will weld the perches on Thursday night and make an upper shock mount

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/IMG_0280-1.jpg

14ff hanging I will finish up the rear Thursday night and start ripping into the front this weekend.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/IMG_0283-1-1.jpg

So after class today I headed home and got to work. I welded up the perches after finding the perfect pinion and shackle angle combo, and I would have through together the whole axle but I didnt have any grade 8 backing plate bolts. So I tore into the 60 to start the rebuild. To my surprise the D60 has new brake pads, and the passanger side hub must have been recently replaced before I got it. Sweet! So on with the pics for tonight.

Oh, and one pic with some 41s on H2 wheels for a ride height idea

Over the weekend I finished up the rear. Got the brakes done. Ride height is what i wanted. I plasma cut all the brackets off the 60, smoothed it down and wire wheeled and primed everything. I turned the blazer around, put the front on block and now its time to tear the front down.

Blazer U-joint Tech Ok after a night of research I came to these results and made my order through Actionmachineinc.com the U joint on the rear to the 14ff is a conversion joint going from S44 to 1350 part number Neapco 2-1153 Up top the rear shaft and same goes for b...oth in the CV of the front shaft are spicer S44 joints 5-3147 at the axle end on the front is spicer 5-785x....Blah Finding true info on the intraweb sucks

Now that we are all up to date, I have a small...well update :flipoff2: I went to interco (hour and a half from me) to pick up some Blem SXIIs for 250 each. Not to shabby. When I got there they could not find the old mold blem SXIIs anywhere. So they hooked me up and got me setup with some brand new non blem SKIIs for $1090 bucks OTD.
Plan is to use the 42 SXs on my red truck put the 42 Iroks on the M1009 and have a 41" spare in both rigs. I have 2 extra H2 wheels that will work fine for wheel spares.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I posted this on a local fourm but wanted to get it going before it was pirate worthy.... :flipoff2: I am using a lincon 180 .030 with 75/25 mix. After I finish the front and drive it and do a little testing this weekend I will report back on the rear disk brakes. But I would assume that because of the 6.2 diesel wit hydroboost the petal pressure should feel about the same with increasesed braking performance with the 1 tons. I am running the same setup in my red truck and I have no trouble locking the 42s up with the stock MC. I have a build thread of my red truck on GMfullsize but not on pirate, I felt it was to new and not enough trailworth body damage to post on pirate yet :flipoff2: When I start the tripplestick and HAD drivelines I will make a thread about it on here. an exo cage would be different, it seems alot of guys do regular cages since our trucks are so big.
why dont you just buy some tube doors? that way you can swap them back and forth when you go from the mall to the trail:flipoff2:

I was going to buy some tube doors....But here is what happened. I am trying to get this thing done, minus the cage for Louisiana club challenge to go show up some jeeps on october 2nd. SO I called up Jesse at balzen offroad and bought front and rear bumpers from him. I was going to make my own, but time just didnt permit. So I stilll have a good bit of 16 gauge steel laying around from when I did the floors, plus I like the look of half doors. I have always wanted a exo cage due to chicks really dig it at the mall, and it gives them a place to put all their shopping bags.:flipoff2: An exo would be semi different but I am going to tie it into the sliders I am fabbing up and the Blazen offroad bumpers along with some whats that thign yall say alot....triangulation???:flipoff2:

Bigred,
Your CUCV is awesome! Great minds think a like! I really like your rear front spring perch mounts for adjustibility- I ended up re-drilling the holes for the rear DIY4x flip brackets to get the shackle angle I wanted. With that amount of flex you will have and those tires you are going to have to trim a LOT of fender, I bet it will be a little tough for you to keep the inners on the front.

I want to build some tube doors for my truck as well, but for now I just take them off with the quick release pin idea from coloradok5, people seem to dig it.

I don't have any pics of my t-case cross members yet but I will get you some. I made my own clocking ring to save money but it ended up being a major PITA and I definitely wouldn't do it again. Still it is one of my favorite mods I've done to the truck though. Also it makes for one hell of a front driveshaft angle when you're drooped out.

My truck had the IP replaced right before I got it by the previous owner, so I don't know how my situation compares to stock, but turning up the pump definitely helped things out in my case. I plan to eventually do the turbo swap from a 6.5 when I finish gathering all the pieces and that should really wake things up. When I went to the 39.5's from the stock tire size I actually picked up a couple miles to the gallon because the engine turns so much less rpm's around town, now it really seems to be in the "meat" of the torque curve.

I went with the sky crossover for my truck and it steered great until I got it in the rocks, lets just say its a little lacking when bound up and I have a 5' stick of 1 3/4" by 3/8" wall DOM on the way to replace the stock tie rod. Needless to say I have been researching hydro assist options and apparently when using hydroboost with hydro assist some people have problems running both their steering and brakes. Apparently the system will have plenty of pressure, but the hydroboost system might not have enough flow to run the steering and brakes correctly and it needs to be "high flowed" to work right. Again, I plan on going hydro assist when I get the coin so I haven't tried it myself, just something to keep in the back of your mind.

I really wanted to do the 63's in the rear of my truck, but didn't because of that damn saddle tank. I don't wanna move it to the bed yet because I still use my truck as a truck, but I'm gonna look at moving it up a few inches when I cut the rockers to weld in some sliders.

Can't wait to see her running!

I suggest doing a exo... I personally like them and have never seen one in Louisiana... thats what I plan to do with the tahoe once i acquire some fab skills:D

Spink, Thanks for the info. For my pump I think the westtexas offroad mod will work well for it. My buddy is running full hydro with the mod and has had no issues so far. I am making my own steering out of 1.5 .250 DOM, I hope to get the entire front done between thursday, friday, and saturday nights after work and be able to do a test run sunday. But thats if all my stuff comes in this week from Letsroll (psc), parts mike (towers), and if the local napa has some hydro fittings after I tap my 2wd box. As for the fender/tire issue :flipoff2: I will cut as much as I need to keep the iroks off the sheetmetal and limit up travel. They cut easy enough as it is already!

Bub, the exo cage will be done soon. I would like to have it before I wheel morris mountian for Thanksgiving.

Ask and you shall receive,
I really don't wanna clutter up your thread too bad, but here are some pics of my clocked t-case. All the tubing is 1 1/2" by 2 1/2" with a 3/16" wall thickness. All the ends are capped and all the bolt holes have a small piece of tube inside them to keep them from crushing when tightened down. As you can see from my pics, I clocked the t-case before I lifted the truck and because of the steeper driveshaft angle from the lift, the front crossmember no longer fits and I am having to modify it.

Here is my clocking ring I built out of 3/8" steel, It could be a carbon copy of the one DIY4x sells it just has a little bit bigger diameter
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/spink7124/IMG_0513.jpg

In this pic you can see how I got everything so tucked up, I used the one piece tranny mount from a later model chevy and built the adapter out of angle to get it outta the way.
My finger is pointing to the bolt holes where my third crossmemeber was originally bolted, and you can clearly see why it no longer clears the front driveshaft.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/spink7124/IMG_0517.jpg

In this pic my finger's pointing to where I had to cut the tabs off to clear everything, the tabs on the drivers side are still intact.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/spink7124/IMG_0516.jpg

Here is a piece of 3/8" steel that I bent this weekend to modify the front crossmember.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/spink7124/IMG_0500.jpg

This is my plan to modify the front crossmember, of course this is just mock up and nothing is tacked yet, It will need to be trimmed and it's getting some gussets. The cutout in the middle is to clear the tranny pan, and the legs bolt to the aforementioned tabs in the previous photos.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/spink7124/IMG_0502.jpg

Side view of everything currently. When I get things really bound up the t-case rubs a little bit, but so far it has been nothing to worry about. I have set the tuck down pretty hard without incident.
When everything goes back together I also have a 2' by 3' piece of 3/16" steel that I am gonna skin everything with, it will go frame rail to frame rail and from the front crossmember to the rear crossmember.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/spink7124/IMG_0522.jpg

That's good to hear that your friend is running a hydroboost with just the west texas offroad mod and its working well; I will be doing my hydro assist just around the corner.
I am also very interested to see the design of your exo. Sorry for the long post, I just feel that my pics are little confusing and not very self explanatory.
Lemme know if you have any more questions about my flat belly and I'll try to answer them the best I can.

I went to interco (hour and a half from me) to pick up some Blem SXIIs for 250 each. Not to shabby. When I got there they could not find the old mold blem SXIIs anywhere.

That's probably because they were on a truck headed my way :flipoff2: Just got here this afternoon. $1110 shipped. Couldn't get ahold of the lady that normally takes care of the Blem tires, so somebody else took my order. That's probably where the confusion came from.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/757370/thumbnail/img_0007.jpg (http://www.supermotors.net/registry/media/757370)

Sorry to hijack, but did they say what was blemished about these? They look perfect to me. Can't find anything at all wrong with them.

Spink thanks for the pictures. I will be ordering a DIY4x ring soon. I have access to a nice mill and lathe while i am up here at school, but just not the time. another thing. I am going to run my 52s in the front hole of the B52s. I havent measured yet but I am assuming the rear mount will be moved forward to give the the shackle angle I want. What setup are you running?

Enginerd I will get you some measurements in the PM I butted up the hanger all the way up the body mount then set the hanger up to my shakle angle with no weight on it was 5 to 10* with no weight on the springs

Screamin, well thanks for getting the tires and allowing me to get the good ones :flipoff2: And you wont notice anything wrong with them. My 42 Iroks are blems and the only thing I could find with one of them was the I on interco was a little crooked.

I will have an update tomorrow night, Front end will get removed and B52s and D60 hung hopefully.

09-17-2009, 09:12 PM
Bigred,
Yep, you assumed right. I am on the second hole from the front with the shackle hanger in the stock location; the angle as it sits is between 20 and 25 degrees.

I think that if you put it in the most forward hole you will have to move the shackle hanger forward a bit to achieve the desired angle...fun times!

They mount with a bunch of brackets. I am not running them front or rear and the frame it bare, so they will not be going back on. Kyle brought up a good point in another forum, Thought I would share

Of all the things to set yourself up for possible failure, I'm not quite sure why you would subject yourself to assist and steering failure by tapping those end caps.

It's just soo easy to tap the body of the box or buy the JKW caps. If that end breaks it's going to be messy, un-enviro friendly even with a spill kit, oh, and a huge pita if you're bound up in a technical section (more likely considering) to fix it or get it out.

You're doing such a nice job of eliminating problem areas I'm just confused by that tactic I guess.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

Antiwraps are not a option, with that soft of a spring and a zero rate they are mandatory. Wrap would be horrible, they will come. I am in the middle of the build so it will get done. Thanks for the compliment Jesse, quality is great on the bumpers.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "not an option", I've got the same set up without an anti wrap bar, and haven't had any need or issues rise yet. Wheeled it extensively on the 64"s for the past year and a half, all has been good.

Not saying that I wouldn't get one, because eventually, I will build one for it.

Well, I should have stated some more of my experiences. So far with my red truck, even with high dolla Alcans, I wrap pretty bad when under heavy throttle. So far after driving the blazer around and playing around a bit I did not get to much wrap, But i was not being to rough on it yet. I will wheel it a few times and see how it does. I am use to the power of my Red truck, and the blazer is looking like I will need a crawl box. We will see.

Not much of an update, but I did hang the bumpers. Front went wend on great, as for the rear....None of the holes lined up, and the driver side mount was about .25-.5"s to far out.
I made some new rear mounts, and also drilled 1-1/8" holes to run the electrical the same as the factory setup. I wound up with 6 grade 8s on each frame rail holding on the rear bumper...I dont think its going anywhere.

Also, drove over to the local tire shop to use their rack to see if anything was binding and to get some driveshaft measurments. I did find out the brakelines in the front are way to short. SO i ordered some longer ones and will have to take more measurments after i install them this weekend.

Shitty pic i know, I will get more after new lines are installed

I think it looks awesome, very nicely done. Do have one question, did you have to drop the gas tank to install the shackle flip?

When i did the initial install I just welded on the rear hangers. So I did not drop the gas tank. Over the past weekend, even though I have them welded on with some of my booger welds :flipoff2: I did drop the tank and install the inside frame straps. Its not bad and only take about an hour. Just make sure you have no more than 10 gallons in it. I used rachet straps to pick it back up. Worked out great.

Also any suggestions on what color is should be painted? I was leaning towards A darker olive drab or flat black.

Looking good man,
Just wondering if you got the hydro assist completely hooked up to see how well it is working with your hydroboost? Does it provide adequate power for the steering and brakes? You end up doing the West Texas Off-Road mods to the stock pump?

Big Red, I really like the way the K5 is turning out. Nice low COG, even on the 42's. The H2's & bumpers look cool too. I'd go flat black & do the bumpers, wheels & accessories in O.D. green. Have fun with it, & post up some wheeling pics.

Awesome truck - tell me if you ever want to sell it and I'll take a journey over the ocean :)

Always nice to see so with fabrication skills (unlike me :( )

One question:
At the rear bumper pic, the shackle angle looks pretty flat for a K5 without the spare and no load in the bed. Or is it just the pic?

Thanks for the compliments. Well, this afternoon I ran to wally world and I turned the corner and what do you know... Spray paint for 2.77 a can and there was a case of olive drab krylon.. So the blazer will be a tad darker than it is now and will be easy to touch up after trail damage. I have always liked the color of the blazer after it gets wet, and this spray paint is close enough to what I am looking for, and even better at 2.77 a can

Well I finished most of it up saturday night and wheeled it sunday. Welded on the shock towers, longer brake lines, tom woods front shaft, put a zero rate in the rear, superlift 1104 pitmanarm drilled to 3/4" and put the beadlocks and 42s from my red truck on the blazer and mounted the spare.

Took it out to a local place and wheeled the crap out of it. But 10 minutes into the trail I blew a hydro line. The one on top of the box, the hose blew right out of the PSC reusable fitting. I busted out the angle grinder, put a fresh end on the PSC line, threaded the reuasable fitting back on, bled the hydro and was back going in 35 minutes. Held together great, but by the end of the of the day i had bent the crap out of the driver side leaf. But still made it to and home from the trail in one piece

I will post more pictures and some vids when people start posting them on a loal forum.

Carnage list for today
-Busted hydro line on top of my box and lost all powersteering along with some braking due to hydro boost but had it up and running in 35 minutes
-busted out back window, when my tire on the tire carrier in the rear shoved into the tailgate when i smoked one of the many many trees i hit
- driver side blinker in same hole as rear glass
-bent passanger side leaf and inverted driver side pretty good
-body damage all around!

If you haven't found out yet you may need to do injector work to get the 6.5 turbo setup to work on you truck. I had a guy buying my turbo setup off my old 6.5 and he backed out due to the injectors being longer I believe thus contactin the manifold on the turbo side. I'll do a little checking and report back if you need any more info. Nice built also.

Anybody with experience with swapping a 6.5 turbo onto the 6.2 Please chime in and let me know any problems i might run into. I have read that it is pretty much a direct bolt in since I have no AC and is all mechanical. Looks like the 6.2 will be getting a turbo also soon.

BigRed05
11-07-2009, 10:06 AM
Thanks for the info. I am not sure if I want to turbo it. I might be fine with a crawl box and 5.38 gears. I am not goin to drive it much on the street anymore, and dont ever plan on going faster than 55mph. Its no speed demon thats for sure, so I might as well gear it low.

Pas few days it has been a bitch to start, I ordered new glow plugs for it and a new glow plug controller, becuase the glow plugs are not cycling correctly. The bad part is, this is a 84' which has the crappy controler. In 85' they switched to a better controler. I might upgrade If I keep having problems with the ealier model controller. Here is some info I have found on doing the swap thus far from thedieselgarage

I traced all the wires from the new controller to the harness to make sure where they went.
1.Terminal A is not used.
2.Terminal B connects to the “s” terminal on the starter.
3.Terminal C connects to the light blue wire from terminal 3 of the old glow plug controller that has been connected the two black wires from terminal 5 and 6 of the old glow plug controller.
4.Terminal D connects to the main wiring harness and receives power when the ignition switch is in the ON position.
5.Terminal E is grounded to the chassis.

The old controller's remaining brown and dark green wires are capped

Problem? The other day I started the suburban up and noticed that when I start the engine the glow plug light flickers and stay on constantly when the engine begins to run. Not wanting to burn up the glow plugs, I haven't run the engine more than 15 seconds after it starts to see if the glow plug light stays on.

I've never noticed glow plug light flicker and the glow plugs stay on constantly when the engine begins to run on previous diesels driven.

I understand that some glow plug cycling after starting is normal, but how long should I wait to see it its not a "normal" situation? The Suburban may have B80 or B100 in it, will that make a difference?

Is Terminal C's wiring the issue? I plan to just connect Terminal C to the glow plug wire post, however, should I put a temperature inhibitor switch inline? If so, should I use the 84-85 inhibitor switch (PN 23507005), or is there another switch that might be better?
As far as the problem: After a day of scratching my head I decided that the only cause for the glow plug light flickering during cranking and then staying on was the wiring of Terminal C. As stated above, it was connected to the light blue wire from terminal 3 of the old glow plug controller that has been connected the two black wires from terminal 5 and 6 of the old glow plug controller.

The solution: I clipped the wire and connected Terminal C directly to the new controller's glow plug feed post with a crimp on connector (I crimped and soldered the connection).

The wires from the new 85-93 glow plug controller's harness should be connected as follows:
Terminal A is not used.
Terminal B connects to the “s” terminal on the starter. (Or any wire in the harness that receives power only when the engine is cranking.)
Terminal C connects directly glow plug feed stud. (I'm still trying to decide on the need for the inhibitor switch)
Terminal D connects to the main wiring harness and receives power when the ignition switch is in the ON position.
Terminal E is grounded to the chassis.

Hope someone can use the info

You can run the glow plugs to a on/switch, that way you can control how long it is on. My dad had trouble with his 6.2 keeping the glow plugs going to long, so he just ran them to a switch. On cold days he would let them run for about 10sec and it would usually kick right over. Then shut them off once it started to run smooth

Love the Blazer but thats kinda painful to watch. If thats the terrain you wheel most of the time I would be looking hard into a 6.5 turbo swap or an old banks kit to put on your 6.2. They actually make good power with a turbo. I think the old banks kit claimed like knocking 10 seconds off in the quarter mile with there kit. Given that from like 30 second 1/4 miles to 20 second 1/4 miles its still a huge increase.

You just don't seem to have enough HP to deal with the mud and the high wheel speed climbs without having to beat the truck.

But like I said love the rig.

Big red,
Man you work fast! congrats on getting her wheeling already. My truck, being an '84 as well also had the crappy controller, but when I got ahold of it someone had already put a momentary switch on it to preheat the plugs and I have not had a single problem out of it. Sometimes its a bit inconvienient but I haven't had a lick of trouble out of it so far and never a problem in the cold.

They also have an updated part number for the glow plugs off the 6.5 that are impossible to burn in too. I used to have an old caddy with an olds 350 diesel and had constant problems with the glow system pulling out burnt plugs is NO fun. Since yours is mainly a wheeler I would seriously consider the momentary switch.

Any specs on that front shaft? I called tom woods but ended up going with Carolina driveline as he didn't seem too interested in my needs; my shaft is currently back at carolina driveline getting a longer slip after I poggoed it last month and broke the t-case in half. How are you keeping that double cardon from binding?

Yes, It was just turning on the rock I was sitting on. Then when I fell back forward after the DS broke and was then being winched backwards, the pinion caught that rock and pulled my front axle forward, bending both front leafs.

wanna sell it?

are you still thinking of doing a doubler?

BigRed05
12-03-2009, 08:24 AM
Nope, the sront spring is in the 2nd hole from the front and the hanger is in the stock position. At ride height its about 30* As you can see if flexes pretty good IMO. Alos, about the doubler, I plan to gear it to 5.38s during the xmas break. I also plan to throw a 6.5 turbo on it now. So we will see how that wakes it up. If not up to my power likings for crawling, a 203/205 will be in order.

12-03-2009, 09:14 AM
Do you think you are going to be able to get any kind of wheelspeed with the 6.2 and 5.38?

I would def try the turbo with the 4.10 before I regeared it and do the doubler if you still feel like you need more crawl gear. You can probably do the doubler for close to what the regear would cost and gain a lot more crawl ratio to boot

He needs the gear as 2nd gear in the tranny is useless. 5.38's will allow more gearing options for crawling/ wheelspeed. Plus the turbo will give some more ummff on the top end IMO. Mikes blazer followed my Toyota all weekend in Arkansas. I like it alot.

I will blow the motor trying.... I am not going to baby this thing once I can get the axle wrap under control, and can actually spin the tires. I am going to slap the 6.5 turbo onto it and run it till it blows. I am just going to keep an eye out for a good deal for a 5.3 L33 complete with harness and pcm to swap in if I dont like the turbo setup on the 6.2.

Taken the 4* shims out the front and putting some 10* ones in to lift my front pinion up (its not going to be driven to much on the road anymore) I am going to mill the zero rates down .25 on either side to make the zero rate .5" tall. So, I am gonna finish up everything up before i start the cage. I am going to gear the axles, new 52" springs up front, Clock the Tcase, new tcase xmember, anti wrap rear, PSC high flow pump, PSC heatsinc, PSC resi, and get a 6.5 turbo (for now). After I finish all that I am gonna order Jegs sportsman racing seats and Pro-Series Latch & Link 4-Point V-Type Harness... Input?

So much for keeping this thing cheap:flipoff2: But I want it to perform to my expectations

Real nice rig, the 6.5 will not give you great hp for tire spinning fun but will give you the bottom end grunt that will be good for crawlin. Mix that with the 5.38 gear and this thing will crawl on its own.

Also got some Poly seats from jegs and some Gforce harnesses. I also ordered a SW racing rollcage with the family cage. I am going to make it a 4 seater with all seats tied into the cage. I will also be adding my ownparts into the cage. And still on the hunt for a 6.5's turbo setup. Time to get things rolling again

No, it is 3"s further back I want to say. than the factory position. Let me know if you need pics.

I am running it from the booster return line into the heatsink into the resi. The steering box return goes strait to the resi and I used the middle mount for it. Everything seems to be flowing fine. It did take a bit to bleed, as the heatsink and pump had to fill, along with working a few air bubbles out. Major difference n 4L now. I have no trouble steering on pavement at 6psi. Steers as good as my Z71 now.

I love your 1009.... I wish mine was beefed up that good. The 6.2 is a pig, hell you damn sure can't use 4high or at least not in mine. So you think the 5.3 would have enough power in your rig? I am think about putting a carbed 5.3 in my 1009. I have also thought about doing the 6.5 turbo mod too but I have heard the 6.2 won't handle a lot of abuse with the turbo.

Guys, put an EGT gauge in and turn that pump up! My 1008 will powerbrake with its 6.2, stock 4.56 gears, and 39.5 pit bull rockers. I would say a solid 40 horsepowers with 1/8 turn on the pump, some more holes in the air cleaner housing, and a free flowing exhaust.

Fairly cheap and easy mods and I feel like it really wakes these things up.

Big Red, you running the stock pulley on your PSC pump? I now have the exact same steering setup as you (I went ahead and went with the PSC pump) - tapped 2wd box, PSC ram, pump, and resi. My cooler is a cheap one that mounts to the radiator. Interesting mount, I'll have to grab a couple pics of mine, it mounts in front of the water crossover on the intake. The only trouble I have with my system is lack of steering speed at idle; the PSC guys told me to look for a 5.5" pulley.

Yes I am rocking the stock pully still, Let me know how a 5.5" works out for you. Today I am starting the boatsides and figuring out how to mount the cage to the frame. I still need to turn up my IP, but we went night wheeling on Saturday and It performed very well, I even pulled 2nd gear in 4L quite a few times. When I gear it to 5.38s and thow a 6.5 turbo onto it, It will be mostly done, as I am trying to save up to buy a 06-07 Dmax tow rig.

If I wanted to link it I would have, and I would have done it correct and not used cheap coils. Coilovers or struts would be used along with ballistic 3" joints all around Dual triangulated 4 linked rear with a 3 link up front, which would not have been in the budget I planned for this thing. My leafs are working fine and its a great bang for my buck setup.

Here's a couple of mine. Love this build thread btw.

As far as building the 6.2, I'd recommend a stud girdle for the bottom-end to handle the extra load from power mods. These motors can be built to handle decent power if done right. I, myself, like the economy these days.

cheap and easy to make a 6.2 pump out a few more horses, but being stock they only had between 140 to 160HP and the stock 6.2 or 6.5 (mechanical) IP wont give you any more then around 200 or 220 if lucky.

open up the intake but make sure to get outside air, the colder the air the better for these engines, open the exhaust up to help it breath, install a J code intake that doesnt have the EGR (if you have a C code intake), turn up the pump 1/8th of a turn (only after a EGT gauge is installed).

on the more expensive side you can get a banks turbo kit new for around $2,000, used around $1,000. you can also go and grab a 6.5 turbo, exhaust manifold, heads, injectors, injector lines and ip.

Since I sold the reid knuckles I had on my red truck, I didnt feel like spending the extra cash on reids for this rig. But being full hydro histeer i wanted to beef up the knuckles. Crawlfab had some good shit and nice prices to beef up the knuckles I also bought a anti wrap bracket from him as the BTF one i got seemed a little weenie

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/blazer%20build/IMG_1700.jpg

Ive been jumpin around on the blazer as I haent had a ton of time to work on it but here are whats gone down.

New body mounts

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/blazer%20build/IMG_1695.jpg

Cut off the old sliders and then cut out the rockers for some 2x6 that will weld to the body and frame with tube and frameplates. The cage will also tie into this.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/blazer%20build/IMG_1688.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/blazer%20build/IMG_1690.jpg

Also lost the inner fenders and tailgate

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/blazer%20build/IMG_1689.jpg

And for now, untill the NP 208 explodes again I clocked it and will make a trans tunnel long enough for when I have my BB/205

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/blazer%20build/IMG_1679.jpg

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t269/bigred05_photo/blazer%20build/IMG_1680.jpg

For now thats it, knuckles plated and front end gearing and full hydro is next

in the begining you mentioned the hurculiner not holding up and going to Durabak, how has than been?

I like the adjustable spring hanger... I'll have to start using some of your documentation on either a 89K5 or 85K20 farm truck real soon..

just wrapping up some home repairs first!

btw did you keep the bumper from the red 05? It looked like a buckstop

Not much right now. Been really busy the past few months, but just graduated with two Majors and hat has given me some free time, but now I'm currently working a lot of hours and Duck Season is in full swing down here. I have been devoting a lot of time to that. As for updates, Here is a few things I have been working on here and there.

Got the Dmax like I want it, Programmer, Bilstiens, 325 MTZs on stock keys.

-I also wanted to drop the front end down a tad more as I want to be low as possible. I removed my zero rate up front, and added a spring to the top of the pack to reduce spring wrap. Then bolted the pack together.

-Also since I had the zero rate moving the axle forward 1.5"s, I lost that when removing it. So I then drilled the leafs + 4.125" from the original centerpin for some added wheelbase.

-After bolting the springs up they were a tad more stiff so I was forced to move the bolt one hole reward in my B52 mounts from DIY4X. Thus loosing .5"ish WB But setting the correct Shackle angle. So still looking at 2.125 Added wheelbase up front.

- Before everybody says "its not going to flex for shit" I am going to test it out. I have a full set of alcan leafs from my old red SFA Z71 of different thicknesses and lengths I can cut and mess around with. Or who knows I may need to just make a anti wrap for the front that matches the rear.

Not sure if this was asked/answered already, but....

You said you only spent $117 for your 14BFF disc brake parts at Napa..... If you don't mind saying, how much were the rotors and calipers each? And did you have a core to trade in for the calipers? (if you can do such a thing for those?)

EDIT: Found these rotors on Napa, but I am kind of a newbie to disc brake setups, would these be the correct part? Judging from the picture and that they say they are a type L rotor, I would assume they are what I need, http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?A=NB_4885677_0148361734&An=599001+101986+50014+2014040#

Sorry for the hijack.

Pretty much standard for any 14ff disk setup is 73-89 k20 front rotors and calipers. I used a old 10 bolt I had laying around for core parts.

Look a few pages back and you will have your answer. I got these from interco before the 43 was released and I got these for $220 a peice. So it was hard to pass up. Plus the price jump at Normal price from a 42 to 43 is ridiculous.

Yea its about 3 hours from here in mandeville. And there are a few shitty 4wd clubs that love jeeps on 33s and wheel some private property trails but there is to much drama. I do my own thing pretty much. I like wheelin with my buddies from the Laffy area and i got a bunch of buddies in Bama.

Stock shafts on wat axle? The 10 bolts? Yes I destroyed both of them.

So I was just doing a little here and there but i am going to the Shamrock run at Morris Mtn this weekend but I am leaving Tuesday so we can stop at the girlfriends parents for a few days. So i took off work a few days and started busting ass on this thing. Leaving tuesday (her birthday) has cut out another 3 fawkin nights of getting this thing ready. So i will be doing some painting and wiring up my winches and such at her parents house. Hopefully ill have enough time to throw in a stereo also.

Only thing left to do tomorrow is bump stops, few more tubes on the cage, anti wrap, and mount my shocks.

Here is the progress in the past 3 days.

Wheeled Morris Mtn and had a good time.

Damage report
Broke Bilstien 5150
Bent anti wrap
few new bent body panels

The anti wrap bent just because I didnt have time to brace the tubes together. Im not really worried about it, I will build another.

As for some improvements. I previosly clamped te springpacks together front and rear. I lost a lot of downtravel doing this. I am going to take the clamp off the rear of the pack and rework my front shocks for less up up travel and more downtravel.

Besides that All I plan on doing to this thing is
adding a blackbox with my 205
a front anti wrap
turning up the IP
and adding a few tubes to the cage anlong with a stereo
If the motor blows I will throw in a 5.3 with a mild cam

I have decided to wheel this while I am working on my next SLOW project. I am happy how it performed and I can beat on it pretty hard and not worry about somthing letting go.

My next project I have started collecting parts for is a single seater buggy with dual steering 14 bolts.

And on to the pictures and a few videos of Morris mtn....got some good shine while i was over there also...

You can see how low it really is in this picture. I am on 42s and it is next to a K5 on 6" and 36s

Got denied on both of these. Not enough motor for wheelspeed. Hopefully after I turn up the IP and throw in a crawlbox for more gearing options it will help out

Big Block :grinpimp:

Yes I sprung and bought a BBC for it. 2003 8.1l. I am not in a rush to put it in as I am house hunting right now. But I have already sent the harness off to be made a stand alone, PCM, flashed, 270 comp cam, 1.8 rockers, valve springs, ect. I also have the NP205 sitting here waiting to be swapped in with 1410 yokes. Not sure with this motor if I will go doubler or not. Guess it depends on money at the time.

I am swapping a 5.3 into my rig, and am curious what you mean about making the harness a stand alone? Does this remove unnescessary crap? Where do you get that done? Thanks
Nice rig.

This is the best fucking build with the most info I could find on the net regarding M1009! Great job! Watched all ur videos as well. Sick! I'm doing 1 tons 4.56 arb air lockers front and rear with 52" front and 64" rear with the same Diy4x kits. Very helpful info! Thx!

This is a great build. I was wondering how the 52s do with the weight of the diesel engine? I know you bent them one time but I forgot where the pictures are.
