: Mini truck CV compatability

After having seen talk/suggestions about the Mini-truck CV's and searching it out, I have the folowing question:

Can the Minitruck CV front driveshaft fit a 1975 and newer FJ40 parking brake drum studs by drilling the CV flange holes bigger? Or is the pattern wrong for the later LC flange pattern?

These are going to be the spares, so redrilling the drum and flanges is not going to happen. I do not mind drilling the driveshaft flange pattern with 11mm drill but will not drill out the p.brake drum to move the studs...

Yes.

I run a 85 minitruck CV end mated to a cruiser spline - done by Jesse at high angle. The pattern exactly matches that of a 4-speed t-case drum output, however the holes are too small....mine were drilled to 9/16" to fit.

Also, the 84 mini CV is a possible doner....I've got one of those too...future project part....

Yes, you can drill out the flange holes on the mini truck CV and it will then bolt right up to the later model four speed parking brake drum.
The problem you might have if you are using this mini truck shaft as a trail spare is at the pinion end. The mini truck bolt pattern at the non CV end of the shaft is a different pattern. If you are using this in the rear of your cruiser, the CV end will bolt up to the p-brake drum (after drilling out the flange holes), but the small mini truck pattern will not bolt to the cruiser pinion flange.
You have a few options to deal with this.
You can have a custom shaft made incorporating the mini CV into a cruiser shaft.
If you have a fine spline pinion (ie: aftermarket r&p, or post '79) then you can get a later style round pinion flange and drill both bolt patterns into it. I have searched and as far as I know there is no stock application round pinion flange available for the course spline pinion.
You can use your stock cruiser slip yoke over the mini truck shaft. The disadvantage to this is that you won't be able to take advantage of the longer slip of the mini truck.
The last option is to carry a small pattern pinion flange from an early cruiser and swap that along with the mini truck shaft if you have a problem on the trail.

Thanks for the info!!! I am not worried aboutthe non CV end as it is going to go to Jesse at High angle and get a long spline slip joint put in with a cruiser flange on the end...

Tech writeup for Ih8mud might be in order in terms of compatibility, etc... Let me get the info figured out and I'll type up a quick paragraph.

Also, if you use it on the T-case side you can pull out that flange and drill. That's what I did on my 60 with an early CV joint. Typically same pilot size, different bolt pattern.

So what you are saying, is that there are no round pinion flanges with course splines.. Am I understanding you correctly??? If so you are wrong. I have two at my house waiting to go on my stock 40 series center sections so I can use on my 60 wagon. For the rear shaft all I did was swap out the slip yoke for the 40 series slip yoke and flip the driveshaft.

I do not know where the guy got the flanges from, but i thought that only the '78 40's came with fine spline pinion, and they went back to coarse after that. The 60s all came with fine slpine, that matches the minitruck spline. Also the flanges of a minitruck tcase also match the 60 fine spline pinions, just smaller diameter. The front output inparticular has the same round diameter and bolt pattern IIRC.

Just giving info I have found recently. I think that the later 40s had the round flanges and course splines.

Maybe the confusion is that 78 was the only fine spline 4.1x's, 79 and up 3.7x all fine spline. All replacements are fine spline.

I likewise have a coarse spline round flange on my cruiser....I believe it was off a 69....but honestly I don't know if it's stock or not.

I think I just killed my response, if duplicate then the board is wacky.....

I have a rear e-brake drum flange from a 78 or 79 and a cv shaft from the front of a 81 fj60. They have the same bolt pattern. I just checked them this morning.

Brett, If you want the shaft, make an offer, u have first dibs. It's 23" overall.
