My wife left the tailgate down on her truck and when she drove off, the trailer jack put a huge dent in the top of her tailgate. I'm thinking of building a v-notch/ louvered tail gate out of 1" square tubing. I searched but didn't find any threads on homemade ones. My application would be a 2006 F150.

One of the best looking ones I've seen was where someone had nailed the topside of their tailgate and cut out the v-notch in the stock tailgate and plated the gap, rigged up the latch release and painted it to match.
