Has anyone changed axle tubes on gm 10 bolt ?Planning a straight axle conversion on 94 chevy 4x4 ex cab with drivers side drop.

It'd be worthless. The 10-bolt is as worthless as a front axle as it is as a birdbath.

I only know one person who claims to be attempting it. He has some kind of hard-on for the 10-bolt, as well as any (or no) progress he has made with it. A Dana 44 isn't a whole lot better, but at least they're high pinion and Driver drop (Ford D44's anyway). A Dana 60 is worth the wait, expense and any other justification one might think of for using a 10-bolt. Especially if you're going through the work of swapping it into a previously IFS rig. :shaking:

Yeah take it from me Im running a 10 bolt under a f/s chevy with 38's and Ive broken basically everything from hub to hub at one point in time or another. Ive been waitin on that magical D60 to come my way ,no luck yet but one of these days I reckon. FWIW look for a drivers drop high pinion D60 it will be well worth the time and money.

The 3/4 ton parts are availiable our 60 is under a jeep , so that is where were at .Seems like it could be done with a little effort ,looking for tech advice on taking axle tubes out of the housing?

drill the plug welds, press out the tubes.
turn them around and insert into the other side of the housing.

heat the housing and weld the plug welds back in.

there.

then, sit back and realize that you just spent 25 hours building a front axle thats still a piece of shit.

Why would you go through all that work of messing with the tubes when you could swap the transfer case for a passenger drop by removing less than 10 bolts? This is a serious question...

yep. so many easier ways to go about this. unless your just doing it for practice. grumpy about summed it up. your gonna have to cut the tubes off both sides too cause your gonna have to flip the knuckles around.

Good idea. I hadnt thought about that.

I like the color and the jackstands would probably fail if I put just a little bit more crap on it. I dont believe they are rated for shit.

I was starting to wonder if you thought I was talking about someone else.

How long before you scrap that dumbass idea and find a HP44/60 like you know you should have started with? "Being different" doesn't mean shit when it's a weak link to start with.

Nah, I figured you were referring to me. I doubt I will scrap my dumbass idea, but I might someday.
