I posted this return letter to get input as to what others thought of this member of Congress
September 19, 2002
Mr. Jerry Sparkman
Dear Mr. Sparkman:
Thank you for contacting me regarding President Bush's recently announced
"Healthy Forest Initiative." I appreciate the opportunity to hear your
thoughts on this issue.
This summer's deadly fire season certainly gives us cause to reexamine our
nation's forest policy. We need to take reasonable measures to reduce
fire risks in our forests, but in the process, we should not make
ill-considered changes to current law that we will later regret.
As you may know, President Bush's proposal calls for expedited procedures
for forest thinning and restoration projects that would exempt many of
them from the National Environmental Policy Act. Federal officials
already have considerable authority to take emergency actions to reduce
fire risks on public lands, and I will have to carefully consider whether
the President's proposed exemptions are truly necessary. Forest
scientists recently testified to Congress that the President's plan may
actually increase the number and severity of forest fires.
The House Resources Committee held hearings on the President's proposal on
September 5 and Congressman Scott McInnis (R-CO) has introduced H.R. 5319,
which would implement much of the President's proposal. Should this bill
come to the floor for a vote, I certainly will keep your opinions in mind.
Again, thank you for contacting me about this issue. Please do not
hesitate to contact me again if I may ever be of assistance to you or your
family.
Sincerely,
Zoe Lofgren
Member of Congress

Why do thay always fall back to this act!!! This act is what has kept the thinning of the forest from being done to reduce the fire hazzard. Which this year alone has Killed more wildlife and damaged or distroyed more forest. Shure the NEPA was started to help but the Enviros and there lawers have bent this act way out of shape.
We need to support BUSH on some type of change to help our Forest now not later. Support maybe needed on this up comming bill H.R. 5319
