RE 1.5 front springs
PSC full width kit
shocks- undecided
started with just a 4 inch lift dana 44 rear, dana 30 front, 35's chevy 5.3 700r4 tranny. I couldnt keep from breaking the dana 30 over and over everytime i went out, so i dedcided one ton is where its at.

mike4089 09-20-2009, 06:12 PM someone help me out on the rear bumper...its only tacked on so i can change it. I really want to get the bottom of the bumper flush with the bottom of the cross memeber, but if i do then i wont be able weld the top of the bumper, because i cant get the gun in there because of the body....SOOO this is where i have it. It sits 1/4 of an inch above the factory crossmember...just enough to get the gun in there...

rock-rod 09-20-2009, 06:56 PM unbolt the body mounts and lift the tub. You should be able to raise it 2-3inches without having to disconnect much. Just don't try to tip the body forward. Doing this will tweek the fenders.

Larrys hill!!! Looks good mike, cant wait to see it all come together and wheeling. Also the 5.3 should be happier with the running gear. No more blown up 30s on double whammy:flipoff2:
mike4089 09-21-2009, 01:41 AM I am going to make Double Whammy my bitch when im done!!! I hate that god damn trail....lol
I would remove the original cross-member since the new one is all you need. Also this will give you a chance to rid yourself of all that rusted metal where the cross-member joins the frame.
YredJ 09-21-2009, 12:35 PM I am going to make Double Whammy my bitch when im done!!! I hate that god damn trail....lol
What you need is a little xj lmao :smokin:
mike4089 09-21-2009, 03:32 PM the most XJ ill go is using there springs...you dont have a spare set of stock leaves do you?

It would be some extra work but why not chop the top of the "bumper" so it's the same height at the rear crossmember? Two birds, one stone.
irocyj41 09-21-2009, 08:31 PM I am going to make Double Whammy my bitch when im done!!! I hate that god damn trail....lol
I will be down there this weekend trying to make it MY bitch !! My first attempt was not good . My dash strait fell apart when I landed .

No I don't, and andrew dosent either I don't think. I'm just good friends with andrew but I haven't wheeled with you. Nice start to your build though, I'll be watching. I've tried double whammy and took it hard and came down spinning and broke a rear drive shaft. But coming down it is a blast too. Iroc nice rig, might be down to the gator event as well but just hanging out, might see ya then.
My attempt...

well the reason that i wanted it flush on the bottom is to raise the springs up just a bit more...there is only like a 1/2-3/4 of an inch more that it can go up....so ive decided to leave it and if i have to i can redrill the holes in the shackles up 3/4 of an inch to make up for it...
black2door 09-22-2009, 10:40 AM Its gonna be cool when your done Mike, maybe you can finally follow my little XJ on 32s up double whammy :D

COPPERHEAD42 09-27-2009, 08:54 PM Good ol double whammy. This hill just goes up and up and up. When its wet I would start on the right and end up on the far left side :) Its a fun hill. Always a crowd gathered there. It has changed alot since I first went up in a cherokee on 33's with open front end

Sweet build and cant wait to see it done. Maybe we can meet up at smorr sometime and run some trails
irocyj41 09-27-2009, 09:05 PM Looks good . I was in your neck of the woods this weekend . I finally made it up Double Whammy . That trail changed so much in less than 4 months . So here it is . Sorry for the hijack .
YouTube - Double Whammy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4uEMj3Cb8c)
mike4089 09-27-2009, 10:42 PM sweet video...jeep looks bad ass Hopefully mine will walk right up it like that.
my wheel baseis looking like 103-104 and ill be running high steer in the front with hydraulic assist and 39's.... also looking like im going to comp cut it...id like to be able to just open the wheel well up but i dont think thats going to do......ill probably have it all together and going before i ass the assist just bescause im super anxious to get it finished to see how it does....my goal is no later then december fist so well see how well that works.....Ill probably run out of money before that happenes....lol
irocyj41 09-28-2009, 07:18 AM I think it would look cool with a stretch kit on it . I think genright makes them . Or you could just cut your sheet metal around your wheel well and move it back then use what you cut out of the rear to put in the front . It would make it look like a bobbed scrambler . :smokin: I know it would be alot of tedious welding but it would look cool .
mike4089 10-06-2009, 06:24 PM well everything was going good until i installed the PSC full width kit...ive got the front bracket all squared up...but the rear pieces are not sitting square becuase the body mounts on the jeep arent square??? ive measured them a thousand times and there 3/4 of an inch off...i kinda of did my measuring off the body mounts when i mounted the plates so now after i hung the springs my center pins are 3/4 of an inch off....
tomorrow im getting the plum bob and im going to leave the plates were they are since there welded, and im going to modify my shackle hangers in order to get back the 3/4 of an inch that i need....This has put a total speed bump in my process...i was hoping to have the front end done and in and working on the steering and drive shafts by now....FML!!
irocyj41 10-06-2009, 08:01 PM Trust me when I say I feel your pain .I did and redid prolly 3 or 4 times before i got it like i wanted it . Then I ripped it all off and four linked it . All in the same year . More like six months .:mad3:
black2door 10-06-2009, 09:15 PM Better hurry up Mike, cause the little Chero on 32s made it up the left side of Double last weekend. :D
JM1914Tn 10-07-2009, 07:09 AM Nice build. Keep plenty of pictures coming. I like the particle board floor, its working for you. Question, on the psc full width kit. With the new springs up front and the axle mounted, it looked like the position of the perches put the yoke almost pointed at the ground instead of toward the t case. What was up with that?
mike4089 10-07-2009, 09:57 AM yeah in those pics it wasnt all bolted in so the angle wasnt exactly right...and also with the shackle reversal it seems like the caster is a little more then i need...im going to get it all done and see what it looks like and maybe shim it up 2-3 degrees and see what happens
YredJ 10-22-2009, 10:25 PM Mike, you got any updates?
mike4089 10-23-2009, 05:16 AM i will have some good updates this weekend....took a little time off from working on it....hitting it hard with a bunch of new parts though tonight
gdowling 11-02-2009, 12:22 PM i will have some good updates this weekend....took a little time off from working on it....hitting it hard with a bunch of new parts though tonight
Nothin yet??
RIDETOEAT 11-02-2009, 01:28 PM bring it !!!!!
mike4089 11-02-2009, 01:47 PM i got my extra set of XJ leaves this weekend, but i didnt have a chance to put the extra main leaf in becasue ive been busy with school, and we spent some time fixing a few leaks that we had on the roof of the shop.
However, my new front RE1444's will be here on wednesday, and ive been going thru hell trying to get a pitman arm that will work. I finally got a 1 ton ford arm and had the splines cut out of a wagoneer arm and put in the ford one...however they put the splines in UPSIDE DOWN!! so now that has to be fixed before i can make my drang link....i also took delivery of my 39.5 irock radials...and god damn they are BEEF!...
school and work are getting the best of this build, but thursday thru sunday of this week my jeep will have my full attention...!!
YredJ 01-01-2010, 02:48 AM Mike have you got your steering and springs figured out yet?
mike4089 01-01-2010, 10:09 AM for the most part.....ive been having a very rough personal life lately and the jeeps been on the back burner but ill get back at it soon
black2door 01-01-2010, 11:43 AM That sucks, good luck with life man.
big black heep 01-01-2010, 01:00 PM sick build man prety much along the same line as my build.

Gotcha, well hopefully everything will work itself out. cant wait to see the progress.
Alex
mike4089 01-02-2010, 05:39 AM slowly my life is getting back together...im gonna go out to the barn today and put some shims in the front end and possibly mount the 39's...if i get the tires mounted ill definitly take some pics
yjjeepster 01-02-2010, 06:13 AM What's up with the flat stock vise gripped to the tailpipe?
mike4089 01-02-2010, 08:27 AM haha we forgot to get the 220v extension cord from a buddies house...so the ground on the welder wouldnt quite reach the jeep to get a good ground....so we had to compromise...
mike4089 01-31-2010, 04:37 PM FINALLY!! got some work done on the jeep...the front end is all done minus gears locker and drive flanges, the steering is complete and works very well, have full range of motion in the steering...the rear end is done minus gears and locker....waiting on new yoke for 14 bolt, and should have some shocks on order sometime this week...still undecided on what length i need for shocks, have to get it drivable so i can back it out of the shop and lift the tires with the tractor to measure....
still have a little more cutting to do on my crusher corners, but there all fitted up and bolted on, gonna take them off and get the powder coat done on them next week

YredJ 01-31-2010, 09:12 PM Mike, whos does powder coat around here? is it reasonably priced? any more pics of the steering? With you h2 wheels on there, whats the width from tire to tire?
mike4089 02-01-2010, 06:39 AM Mike, whos does powder coat around here? is it reasonably priced? any more pics of the steering? With you h2 wheels on there, whats the width from tire to tire?
there is a guy on commercial off of glenstone....he does a great job and is pretty cheap...ill get some more pics of the stering, i forgot my camera so had to usee my cell phone....and ill measure up the width next time im at the shop
going back on thursday to finish the cutting and hopefully ill have my drive flanges by then so i can get them on and the front tires mounted
mike4089 02-10-2010, 06:04 PM jeeps on all 4's waiting on shocks, gears, lockers....gonna plumb new front brake lines this weekend....still undecided how im gonna do my bumpstops ion the front
If anyone has a good picture or idea on how to do the bumpstops that would be great!! i was thinknig just using square tubing down and 1/4 inch plate off the frame down to the desired height...

black2door 02-10-2010, 06:46 PM Nice Mike, don't think you will have any issues with double whammy now. Can't wait to get my rig done and wheel with you. Might want to come down and check it out soon if thats cool. Need to look at some of your motor stuff too.
-Andrew
mike4089 02-10-2010, 06:47 PM just let me know...i should HOPEFULLY be driving it some time next week, but we will see...its cold and that makes me unmotivated to get out there
black2door 02-10-2010, 06:49 PM Nice, might shoot you a text sometime this weekend if your gonna be free.

gdowling 02-11-2010, 01:40 PM Mike:
What springs did you use in the front? How much stretch did you get out of them? Are you running hydro steer or box? If box steer did you have to relocate?
mike4089 02-11-2010, 01:49 PM RE 1.5 springs, the front end moved forward about two inches..im running normal steering, and the tie rod was hitting the drag link, so i bought a new set of high steer arms that locate the tie rod behind the axle, everything cleared great once i did that....the re springs do make the front sit a little higher then the rear and im hoping that the springs will settle down a little, if not ill look into ways of lowering the front down
sandboxcowboy 02-11-2010, 07:09 PM those front tires are gonna own your fender......... esp. with shackle Reversal..... r u goin to tube fenders?
mike4089 02-12-2010, 05:47 AM yeah those finders will be gone here pretty quick...the wheel is also turned a little bit in the picture so it looks like the tire is closer then it really is....gonna run it like this for a while with the new fenders and see how it does

mike4089 04-18-2010, 12:43 PM finally got the jeep out of the barn and took it for a ride.....crazy life mixed with jeep, means jeep gets put on the back burner.....but im coming close to the end now!!!

measured 42 inches and the rear tires were still on the ground......lots going on so its just a driver for right now....hopefully one more month and i can have it done
TNCJ7 05-21-2010, 09:41 AM Rig looks awesome man! Hope to start on mine once I graduate from college. . one year left. You have done a great job and this thread has given me lots of inspiration to get on with mine!! Now get out and wheel the damn thing and report on how she works!!!
cj7jeep 05-24-2010, 08:12 PM What brand steering arms did you get? I have drag link/tie rod clearance issue with my arms. Do you have any spring or frame clearance issues with the tie rod when flexed?
mike4089 05-25-2010, 11:52 AM i used parts mike high steer arms, and when i had it flexed out in the picture above nothing hit the frame or springs....ive yet to take it out and actually 4 wheel with it...still needs a new gearset in the front before i can do that
mike4089 07-03-2010, 10:01 PM well i dont have very many wheeling pics from today...but i took it out for the first time today, and it did awesome!! other then half way flopping it, and loosing the bead on a tire, the jeep did everything perfectly....

OzarksYJ 07-04-2010, 09:01 AM Mike,
Saw you driving down 60 hwy towards Republic Friday (7-2) and was going to try and chase you down to pick your brain, but since we've never met you would think I was some nut case in a YJ trying to run ya off the road...
Will actually try to shake your hand sometime if your willin to help a newbie out...
mike4089 07-04-2010, 09:15 AM yes it was the hole on peewee's crossing....the dirst just gave way as i was going down...it made for a funny situation
anytime man, ill help you out...i was heading out to republic, on my way to and from billings....send me a PM and we can exchange numbers and meet up sometime
camo1ton 07-04-2010, 09:48 AM Real nice build. I'm at that point with my cj. Are the front just 1.5 CJ springs and the rear are stock XJ rears? Are the axles SRW?
mike4089 07-05-2010, 06:35 AM Real nice build. I'm at that point with my cj. Are the front just 1.5 CJ springs and the rear are stock XJ rears? Are the axles SRW?
yeah SRW 14 bolt, dana 60......the front springs are RE 1.5 SOA springs, and the rears are factory XJ's with a added main leaf....i did alot of driving with out a wrap bar so they are a little S shaped now...what i plan to do is get another set and start mixing and matching leaves until i get what i like.....the rear does sit a little lower then the front but its not enough for me to care....if anything ill put a 6 inch shackle in the back instead of a 4 inch, but i highly doubt it
mike4089 08-02-2010, 10:23 AM well...after 4 years of trying i finally made it up double whammy!! and with open diffs front and rear.....

jbarr89 08-02-2010, 11:45 AM are you only running three u-bolts on the front axle?
black2door 08-02-2010, 12:00 PM Finally made it! Nice.

COPPERHEAD42 08-02-2010, 12:06 PM Awesome. Thats a fun hill. When is your next trip to smorr? We are going to go down labor day weekend.
mike4089 08-02-2010, 02:32 PM not sure....think i might go to disney on labor day weekend....if i dont make it there i will be at smorr though
mike4089 08-02-2010, 02:33 PM are you only running three u-bolts on the front axle?
fonts a dana 60....only has one bolt on the passenger side and uses bolts that goes into the diff on the other side

mike4089 11-21-2010, 02:05 PM couple videos from last weekend at SMORR.....finally made it up rattler waterfall....jeeps now locked front and rear, and is more impressive then i ever thought it could be.....
gonna start working on the cage soon, and this winter its getting the whole electrical system redone, along with a new dash and i think im gonna ditch the shackle reversal....
ive also swapped out the rear XJ springs, and went with dodge ram charger springs.....they seem to flex just as well and they are a little heavier so they havent turned into S's yet....
barillms 11-22-2010, 07:51 AM ... Bout time you cut those silly front fenders off. Nice CJ.
COPPERHEAD42 11-22-2010, 09:05 AM Nice Videos, I remember my first trip to smorr with my cherokee on 33's thinking rattler was not even possible, now we do it every time we go :D
mike4089 11-22-2010, 05:10 PM yeah i feel the same way....i remember when the jeep was on 31's and i would watch all the other rigs go up these awesome trails....i alwasy thought "someday" and now i go almost anywhere....
love the new fenders also....i got them on friday night and didnt even have time to paint them....they are still bare metal...lol
meetyoutoday 11-22-2010, 06:11 PM yeah i feel the same way....i remember when the jeep was on 31's and i would watch all the other rigs go up these awesome trails....i alwasy thought "someday" and now i go almost anywhere....

black2door 11-22-2010, 07:46 PM Badass man, those fenders look alot better. I'm gonna try and get mine done for the Big Meats Run down at Disney. Its on the weekend of March 11th. You should come with us.

mike4089 11-23-2010, 11:27 AM i will probably be there.....its looking like i might be going out to the hammers with it.....take a week off of work, wheel all week and watch the race......if i can make that happen i think it will be amazing!
buzz54 11-23-2010, 01:37 PM I'm building my CJ7 almost exactly like yours and have been debating on what to do with the shackles. I'm just curious why you are thinking about getting rid of the shackle reversal. Thanks
mike4089 11-25-2010, 07:51 AM Well with the shackles in the back I've been having a hard time with my front drive shaft.....I have a pretty long slip shaft in there now but it still comes apart every so often....I could probably just put a limit strap on it.....which that would be alot easier....I also feel like id like to move my front end forward 3-4 inches. And if the shackles were in the front it might be easier to do.....
mike4089 01-10-2011, 06:01 AM KOH is 3 more weeks away, and ill be hauling the rig out there....its getting a complete overhaul on the wiring, and full hydro steering....so far everything is falling together nicely....

WTF?...IDK! 01-10-2011, 04:35 PM Hey, those R/C springs....are they just stock height springs and still on top of the axle?
I have some rear 4" lift R/C springs and was gonna leave it spring under for the rear, but was worried it still be way to high.....my guess it would be pretty near the same height, if we had the same tires, etc...
Thanks!
mike4089 01-11-2011, 06:15 AM they are re 1.5's....it sits a little to tall for my liking, so im going to ditch the shackle reversal and lower it down a bit....the springs work good, i just dont like the reversed shackle all that much
camo1ton 01-11-2011, 08:51 AM Lookin better every time I see it
Any info on the new rear springs, size, number of leafs?
mike4089 01-11-2011, 09:59 AM rear springs are 1990 dodge ram charger springs....i added the small leaf from my old xj's....probably shouldnt have added the leaf because the springs are stiffer then the xj's, so i dont have as much droop as i used to....but the up travel is good, and the springs dont bend in half and look like they are going to snap in two...
jeeps looking like its going to get a major suspension overhaul after the hammers....4 linked rear with air shocks....so we will see
mike4089 01-17-2011, 05:09 AM we got the full hydro steering done....just need to add the hydraulic lines and its good to go....finsih up a little painting and a few other little things and its ready to try out the hammer trails...

mike4089 02-20-2011, 02:32 PM did a bunch of work to get the rig ready for california...being able to wheel the hammer trails, and watch the KOH race amazing!
I got rid of the shackle reversal, and stretched the front 5 inches...wheelbase is at 107 right now.
added rock lights
added a winch,
swapped out the ram charger springs for xj's and added a main leaf from the ram charger and they seem to be working well alot better droop then the ram charger springs..

TNCJ7 02-21-2011, 06:52 PM Rig is lookin awesome man! How do you like it since moving the shackle back to the front? The action shots look great!
camo1ton 02-21-2011, 07:07 PM Rig really looks great! Quite a transformation since last year, big step up from a dana 30. Nice job
mike4089 02-22-2011, 10:05 AM I really like it better with the shackle in the front....just feels alot different, and I was able to lower it a good 2 inches which made it feel alot more stable....thanks for the compliments, I think im gonna try and keep it the way it is for a little while.....will be building a new skid plate for it in the next couple weeks though
madmax_087 02-23-2011, 11:11 AM Cool build, but why the fuck did you chop up a perfectly good CJ? Why not rip apart a crappy YJ or TJ?!?
coues7 02-23-2011, 11:13 AM Looks good. Should be a pretty capable rig.
dozer_xj 02-23-2011, 12:12 PM hey the jeep looks great! Just about to start a dirt floor barn build on my friends YJ.
I have a girlfriend in Marshfield. We should wheel SMORR some time when im down there. We went last summer but just kinda wondered around because we didn't know where anything was.
mike4089 02-23-2011, 03:20 PM Get ahold of me next time your going....I know the place pretty well and can show you around.....
mike4089 02-23-2011, 03:22 PM Cool build, but why the fuck did you chop up a perfectly good CJ? Why not rip apart a crappy YJ or TJ?!?
Well when I first started building I was totally convinced I was putting a lift v8 and 35's and calling it good.....one thing leads to another and you end up cutting up a good jeep......im totally ok and very happy with it

^ what he said! I am in the same boat. . trying to run some numbers on doing an axle swap and cutting up my nice little CJ with the lift, V8 and 35s or trying to sell it and buy a little more built YJ or TJ. BUT if I had mike4089 capabilities, I would probably do the same thing! The outcome in this case is VERY nice IMO! Great build man
buzz54 02-24-2011, 12:05 PM what'd you end up using for steering, looks great i like the approach angle you got there
mike4089 04-04-2011, 06:03 PM went to disney OK for the big meats run.....that was a BLAST! Getting the skid plate reworked now and redoing the track bar....once thats all done i need to stop for a little while....lol

Yea, when you lose a friend because he was wearing his lap belt only, you may change your tune. Wearing shoulder harnesses while wheeling should be mandatory for everyone everytime...if you don't agree, you're a fucking moron. :mad3:
Anyway, nice build man.:smokin:
