I have found a 78 F-250. The guy says that it is 8 lug and a 1 ton truck but he cant find the BOM on the axle. Can anyone tell me how to find out if the front axle is a d60 or d44? What are somethings that I can ask him to look for? If it is just a d44, is it worth my time to get it? Sorry for the newbie question and if this has been covered before (I didnt have a lot of time to search). Thanks for the help.

A real easy way to decide in that particular year is to see if it has ball joint or kingpins basically. Kingpins means Dana 60, balljoints mean Dana 44.

HD 44, heavy duty Dana 44 leaf sprung. I don't know the difference between the regular Dana 44 and the HD 44, maybe beefier axleshafts.
Anyway welcome Newbie:flipoff2:

you could alway measure the covers up/down
D44=10"
D60=11"

Get the BOM before you buy it. It's in the middle center, about 6-10 from the pumpkin. scrape away the crap and it'll be there.
What year truck?

What is the measurement from the top of the case to the bottom? I had him measure it and he said it was 11 - 11.5 in. from the top to the bottom of the case.

I believe it has to be a HD 44 cause I was looking at a
1979 F-250 a couple months ago I couldnt sell my stock to buy it.
I was told on Ford Trucks Forum that it was a Dana 44 HD, and a Dana 60 rearend

It don't "has to be" anything. Lots of F250's (78-79) came w/ D60 fronts....all the snowplow trucks were so equipped...
the best way to ask the guy over the phone to find out would probly be by looking for King pin vs ball joint.
the BEST way, is get him to crawl underneath there and see if "60" is cast into one of the webs next to the cover of the pumpkiin...

He said that he couldnt find any numbers on the thing. I dont think he knew the difference between Ball joints and Kingpins. The truck did have a slow plow on it so that is why I am wondering if it is a d60. If he hadnt said that i would just assume its a d44. Would the d44 be worth my time if I am planning on running 37's or 38's? I only have a 4cyl right now and dont have any plans to upgrade for atleast a year. Even then I will probably only run a 6 cyl.

If it turns out to be a 44 I wouldn't give up on it. Throw some good shafts and ctm's in there and go to town. You'll be alright with the 6 cylinder aswell.

Thanks a bunch for all the info. I have sat down and done a bunch of reading tonight about the d44 and think that i will be ok if that is whats in there. If I have problems keeping it together then I will sell it and get a d60.
