Rogue Bronco 09-19-2002, 04:50 PM While searching and realizing that ya gotta grind the shift rails, I started thinkin for myself............
Why not just leave the interlock pins out?? The ball & springs give you the positions.
What would be the disadvantage to leaving the interlock pins out of the T-case?? or the advantages to grinding the shift rails and leaving the interlock pins in??
SCOTTS_4X 09-19-2002, 05:04 PM first off, about 1.5 minutes with a grinder and it'll be done........second, if you leave them out, I think you would be able to put the front in hi and the rear in low simultaniously, and that = :nuke: not good. plus I don't think it would stay in gear too well.

Rogue Bronco 09-19-2002, 07:06 PM The spring & ball should keep it in the desired location.
As for the shifting problem ............ how often do ya put the tranny in reverse while going forward?? You can do it, but you know better right?
Altho .......... being locked front and rear, front-Hi / rear-Lo might work like cutting brakes (drag the ass, steer the fronts). Hmmmm.
Plus zero minutes grinding :D :D
heep86 09-19-2002, 09:01 PM the detent balls will keep the case in gear, but without the lock out pills you could f@#* up and run hi an low simulateously and blow it up.
if you are afraid of grinding the shift rail then find someone to do it for you.
you may save 2 minutes of grinding, butit will take you 5inutes to take out both freeze plugs and both shift pills, so whats more efficient now?
Rogue Bronco 09-19-2002, 09:19 PM Not afraid of grinding, and my case is in pieces right now anyways.
If the front is in Hi, and the rear is in Lo, does it send power out the shafts(mismatched tire speeds), or does it bind internaly??it will take you 5 minutes to take out both freeze plugs and both shift pills
Don't forget, you gotta pull the shift rails out first. I'ld call that a complete tear down. (a lil over 5 min.):D :D
bgreen 09-19-2002, 09:34 PM I dont know about you but when there is 4 shift levers sticking out of your floor, it gets a bit confusing what gear your in, especially when you add a doubler. DONT BE A PUSSY. Pull the rails out and do it right. :flipoff2:
Some info here (http://www.alaskaoffroad.com/tech_2.htm) if your interested.

edit: the case will go into low and high at the same time, no gringing, just :nuke: if your jucky, you'll just break a d-shaft
grinding the rails is the quick part! fabbing the exttra shifter took longer.
Your case wil bind with front hi / rear low and probably blow the case apart
Scoutaholic 09-20-2002, 05:04 PM It's faster to do the grinding the rail routine. The shift rails come out much easier than the pill.:)
Rogue Bronco 09-20-2002, 08:58 PM As I mentioned, it's already completely apart.
My new Q was if front-HI/rear-Lo and both driveshafts were off, would the yolks spin??
bgreen 09-20-2002, 09:04 PM yes, I gound too much off my rail the first time, and I could put the thing in both gears and drive it around dragging the rear tires. the t-case will not blow up unless you did not realize it and hammered the gas while having lots of traction. IMHO. I think your d-shafts and ship would break first.
