Ok, so I want to get my wife shooting my 870  I know already that the recoil is gonna be too much (well, she won't like it), so what's a good adjustable, recoil reducing stock? I'm already thinking along the lines of reduced recoil shot shells and shit like that.

The main point is so she's comfortable for home defense - just the sight of her holdign the 12 gauge should give most bad guys pause

Any ideas? It's an 870 Super Express w/ the 3.5" chamber, but that hurts like a sonofabitch when you shoot those shells

Shoot birdshot out of it, you might even look for the little 2 inch Aguila shotshells. Get her used to the gun and put 2.75 inch 00 buck in it for home defense, if she is ever where she needs it I doubt she remembers the recoil, or load it with birdshot for home defense and tell her to shoot until it runs out of bullets.

It's adjustable as well for his and her's applications :flipoff2:

Get that, I have one on my Mossy500 and the wife can handle 3inch 00 no problem.

2 3/4" low recoil 00 buck. It should do the trick, especially in addition to a recoil reducing stock.

I'm not too much of a fan of the birdshot approach IMHO. If the intruder is armed you want the fucker knocked down and unable to fire off a shot. For some reason people always depict these HD scenarios to be some thug with a switchblade vs. an armed homeowner. I think if you hear somebody in your house in the middle of the night and you have to go after them, you should be mentally preparing yourself for a shootout not "operating the slide because the sound of it causes criminals to shit their pants and run".

Birdshot as a Defense Load
I have had a lot of questions, summed up as follows: How effective is birdshot (#4, #6, #8, etc.) as a defense load?

We have done tests with various birdshot loads. Birdshot penetrated through two pieces of drywall (representing one wall) and was stopped in the paper on the front of the second wall. The problem with birdshot is that it does not penetrate enough to be effective as a defense round. Birdshot is designed to bring down little birds.

A policeman told of seeing a guy shot at close range with a load of 12 gauge birdshot, and was not even knocked down. He was still walking around when the EMTs got there. It was an ugly, shallow wound, but did not STOP the guy. And that is what we want... to STOP the bad guy from whatever he is doing. To do this, you must have a load that will reach the vitals of the bad guy. Birdshot will not do this.

In fact, tests have shown that even #4 Buckshot lacks the necessary penetration to reach the vital organs. Only 0 Buck, 00 Buck, and 000 Buck penetrate enough to reach the vital organs.

Unless you expect to be attacked by little birds, do not use birdshot. Use 00 Buck. It will do the job.

If you will reread my post I suggested the use of birdshot to get her used to the gun then load it with 2 3/4 00 for home defense. The last sentence was laced with sarcasm since you couldn't tell.

I could tell just fine. Lighten up, Frances.:D
I saw what you were saying, Sturgell. I wasn't trying to flick any shit your way with what I was posting..
It does seem though out of all the different firearms the shotgun seems to be the one with the most bogus information being put out. Especially by a lot of "gun people". I'm by no means an expert, here but, I've been on some threads where people were talking some seriously unreal shit.

As far as thread topic. Yeah sure. I've heard nothing bad about the Knoxx stock. If she did ok with Low recoil 00 buck with the existing stock, that $130 could go towards a Surefire forend and your nightime HD gun is good to go.
Just throwin' ideas around, I guess.:homer:

Ph, and for the record, the shotty has 3" 00 buck in it :smokin:

Not to mention the other guns stashed around the house. Praise the Lord that I educated my kids about when/where to play with guns

:

My wife was cryin' about 2 3/4" out of my mossberg:bawling:. I got LR in it now. I've never shot that ammo before, pretty huge difference between the 2?

first, get rid of that single rail shit  :flipoff2:

Second, I don't personally think there's much difference, unless you're gonna be shooting all day. I'd throw 3.5: in mine, but I don't have any

I figure if it comes down to it, I want the most power I can get.

But you've pinpointed the reason I want to get a recoil reducing stock for my 870 - I want my wife to enjoy shooting it, so hopefully I can work her into a pistol - it's the 10 year plan :shaking:

My 870 came with a comp stock on it. Make a world of difference in felt recoil. I can shoot it a lot longer without noticing the recoil than I can shooting a friends 870 w/ a standard stock.

They got rid of that shit along time ago. If you wanna' bag on something, bag on the plastic trigger guard.
