: Sloppy drive train

How much collective lash should I have. When I acelerate and decelerate quickly I get a noise from what sounds like to gear lash being taken up everywhere. On the trail if I hit a bump that makes me goose the pedal it can start lurching forwards and backwards a little. The rear third member is fairly new or at least new to me. It came from a vehicle that wasnt wheeled and had about 75k on it. the front is stock. T-case and 5 speed stock. Never out of vehicle. My sense tells me it is the t-case so I bought a used one out of the same vehice I got the third member from but after talking to a few people it may be that coupling that goes between the t case and the tranny. What do you guys think. The lash in the diffs doesnt feel excessive.

if you third member in a rover D90 with 4.77 gears. it is my unstanding the gears have alot of back lash in them due to imprecise machining of the grears.

Land Rovers in general have a lot of slack in the driveline, but I know exactly what you are describing with the 5 speed and it is normal.

It could be just Rover slop, it could also be the input to the T-case. I saw one where the teeth were knife edged!

Allright that makes me feel better. I am still going to swap the T-case and change the coupling. might as well I bought it and I have to do a clutch anyway. If I have the same sound I will sell the T-case as a good working unit ready to go.

Having a 5 speed is sure tough on a Rookie offroader. I thought I was seasoned after thrashing down fire roads in the Marine Corps with a Hummer for 4 years. That was until I drove a manual in rocks. I need practice.

There is no coupling.

The splines wear on the output shaft of the gearbox and the input gear of the t. case. Fixing the output shaft means a full gearbox rebuild.

Pull the PTO cover and look at the splines first before wasting your time.

10 to 1 says your experiencing the Rover Slop. Its caused by two things, the t-case, and the radius arms. The t-case you can't do much about. The Q version that I have now helped a little but it could be the fluid I run now too.

The other is the pinion shooting up and down when you accelerate fast. It normal too, and you can't really stop other than a 3 link. Have someone else drive your truck and floor it and slam on the brakes in front of you. You'll see the front pinion moving all over the place.

rear ball joint can make a good bit of noise when it gets sloppy, its the only thing preventing axle wrap in the rear so it sees a lot of torque.

Fixed it for ya!

Thanks guys. Update after I inspect the T-case coupling and the rear ball joint.
