I've got a wrecked disco(94) that I'm finally getting rid of. I planned on pulling the engine(only 110,000)/Trans/Tcase and the remaining usable parts and sending it to the crusher.
I was wondering if any one takes the aluminum body panels off and scraps that separately? Anyone have any idea what kind of aluminum LR uses, and whether or not it's valuable to any metal recyclers?
I still have to call up the local scrap metal place and see what their paying for aluminum, so that may be the deciding factor...
I wish I scrapped it last year when scrap prices were so high:shaking:

I did this with a RRC and it was a lot of work for a little bit of money. the disco has a steel roof though, so you would just be pulling the fenders front and rear.

It's not worth it.
Radiators OTOH... Big bucks!

Yea, thats what I was thinking. I really wasn't all that excited about pulling off those panels.

Think bigger on the parts. Theres a fine example on the rover garage sell of someone selling parts. Rover shit is expensive I buy almost everything used that I can as long as it makes sense.

To get top money for Aluminium scrap it has to be paint free as well. Definitely not worth the trouble. I send barrels of Aluminium shavings to scrap every few weeks, and if theres a bit of steel or iron in the barrel I get nothing for it, same with brass, has to be pure. Its just an excuse the recyclers use to lowball you.

I disagree. It does not take much of an adulterant to ruin an alloy. Given the volumes of material used, eve in mini-mills, a tiny speck of copper can ruin an entire day's worth of steel production.

point taken. I hate when I hit a hard spot in a casting because of impurities. Sometime when I am Wire EDM cutting aluminium I hit a spot of impurity that breaks my wire over and over again. They still arent gonna give you much for some corroded old rover fenders.
