Seems I've been coming across a lot of cool stuff for the new shop lately. At this rate the place will be full before I move in.
I had been planning on building a chassis table for a while now, and just about the time I was starting to price out steel Dustin called and said he found the perfect table on Craigslist....kinda. It was setup with a kind of axle in the middle and a long piece of square tubing that served as a trailer tongue. It was also much too tall for my intended use. The tires were so bad I cant believe they hold air for more than 30seconds and lets just say the drive from my house to the old shop (8 miles) was pretty entertaining. On the up side this thing is freakin beefy as hell. The top is 4'x13' and it's an inch thick. The beams that support the top are 2x12x1/4". Yeah....it's heavy.
Tonight we got to work on gettin this thing usable. First we chopped off the rear legs and pulled the wheels off.

Next I cut out a lifting ring, welded it to the end and used my engine hoist to pick up the other end so we could cut off the other legs and axle. This turned out to be slightly harder than expected. After maxing out my hoist on the 1-1/2 ton setting we realized that this thing was even heavier than we thought. With the hoist pulled in to it's 2 ton setting we were able to get it up in the air.

Once all the legs were cut down I welded on some bottom caps with 5/8" nuts welded in for some adjustable leveling feet I got from Mcmaster-carr. Now I just need to spend some quality time with a flap wheel cleaning all the rust off the top.
