Big DW 09-19-2002, 10:47 PM saw one just like that on this years Rubithon...might even be the same guy...pretty sweet rig!

Yep, 3B if I remember correctly. Those things are a riot to drive. I had a right hand drive BJ73 for several months in Afghanistan.
Cheers,

texican 09-20-2002, 09:21 AM This rig is petrol powered,
No he was not at Moab,
One of my discs was corrupt I guess, only the top half of all the pictures is there.....most of the others are kinda dark, but if I have time tonite I will post the rest that are legible.

Nope. P series motor is a 5 cyl diesel (basically a 1HZ with one cyl lopped off). Judging from the old style grill, I would hazard to say that it has a carby 3F or a 3FE-EFI. The new grill was introduced about the same time that the 1FZ motor made it's appearance in 93/94. Rick?
Edit: Butch> Did the 70 have a full size cruiser front, or the reverse cut mini ala the 80 series?

Duh, sorry.

60seriesguy 09-20-2002, 03:20 PM Assuming everything is original, that looks like a 1985-1990 Heavy-Duty 70 series (tell-tale sign: the grille, the front springs, full-length cowl/hood). From the grille, it's also probably an LX-trim version truck, but it's tough to gauge from just one picture!
I don't see a diesel badge, so it might be a 3F. If it is, 95% chance it's a carb engine, I don't think they ever put the 3F-EFI in the SWB 70 series, or any 70 series, for that matter.
If it's originally white, this may be a truck that surfaced in Texas about three or four years ago, I want to say it was from the Middle East somewhere, but I lost track of it a while back.
If it's been repainted, then it *could* be a Canadian BJ70, there was one in New Mexico a couple of years ago that had been repainted white. It was originally black.
There, that's all I can assume from just one picture! C'mon, Butch, gimme the story, tell me how much of it I got wrong! :)
texican 09-20-2002, 03:47 PM All I know is that it is gas powered , the owner is either from Mexico or further south he brought the truck with him, Steve Laird has his name and stuff, he joined LSC, I'll find out more info.....
Butch
texican 09-20-2002, 03:53 PM here is the owner, anyone know him?
Gotta go pull a motor out of the red 60, daylight is burning.
Butch
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 04:05 PM diesel badge if it was diesel would be on the lower right corner of the grille as we look at it and on the back left side door (passenger side to us)
petrol
old schoool grille = pre 1989, engine = it'll be a F engine carby 3F prolly, P = diesel..
a guy came and bought some rims off me yesterday in the mwb version of them, and im looking at a lwb version for a tow rig
those things are common, just junk ;)
nice looker though!!
yah, it WILL have the fullsize front diff (i.e. interchanges with rear diff) a la 40 series..
butch, is the only PADDA on here
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 04:18 PM http://www.homestead.com/offroadrig/files/purple17.jpg
this guy has 44x19.5 boggers, and toyota axles :barf:
but has only ever broken one CV
yeah, and he wheels it hard too  :flipoff2:
(i was breaking CVs with 33TSLs and a 4cylinder)
oh well...... the tyres are cool, its gotta take some balls to cut up tyres that are worth $1300 each!! :D
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 04:23 PM :flipoff2: MAN, now i have taken over butchs ROLE as chief padda in the landcruiser section :flipoff2:
60seriesguy 09-20-2002, 06:03 PM The owner might be from Mexico, but the truck's gotta be from further south, ain't no Toyotas in Mexico before 2002!
If it's gas, then it's an FJ70, carburated 3F, same drivetrain as the Princess. I think I spoke too soon, the interior seems to point to STD trim rather than LX, which is weird, the STD's for that period had a black grille.
FUN Land Cruiser to drive, I daily-drove and wheeled a 1988 FJ70 and it was the most fun Land Cruiser I've ever driven. Unfortunately, it just didn't have the cargo capacity for the kind of expeditions that I was running at the time.
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 06:22 PM what about a troop carrier version, 11 seater bus!!!
im thinking of getting one for my tow rig!! :D
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 06:27 PM AS...i meant
AS my tow rig
minor lift 33s, extractors:rolleyes:
why bother...soon after i get it, it's gunna have FORCEDinduction, the turbo off my 40 will go onto it, and then i'll give it a 1" body lift to clear the pipes, supercharge and exctractors on the 40, and we are good to hammer back down ;) :D
OH yeah, i can smell the diesel burning right now!!

nope its the POV pack :flipoff2:
the LX ones, you can pick from a fair distance
JasonH 09-20-2002, 08:19 PM It is a carbed 3F. 5spd. I checked it out at the last meeting. He's from Venezuela and brought the rig with him. I didn't get his name though.
60seriesguy 09-20-2002, 09:16 PM Venezuelans...they're like cockroaches, EVERYWHERE! :)
Okay, now I can give you the REAL scoop. Truck is a 1988, 1989 or 1990. FJ70's only came to Venezuela in 1987 and the first year didn't have the grab handle on the A-pillar. After 1991 there were cosmetic changes. It IS an LX, or what passed for an LX in Venezuela. That meant cloth upholstery, PS and a center console, carpet.
Drivetrain is exactly the same as mine, but without a fan clutch; this means they howl like a banshee at high speed, you downshift to 3rd gear and it makes a racket! Bad for deep water crossings, too.
Looks good, anyone got a contact number for the guy?

my apologies!!
the vehicle you are describing is close to what we got in stock trim, our LXs, had all sorts of cool stuff, turbos, electric wiondows, electric mirrors, button activated 4WD and rollcage, so over here, it would be a stocker and be common
looks in good condition, these things rust out BAD around the gutters
bigpopparock 09-22-2002, 06:17 AM That truck had plenty of rust living in dents on it but it is very cool.
