: running cage through dash
IronBenderII 09-20-2002, 08:51 AM All, I want to run the new cage through the dash yet still have it removable (the cage). I did a search and didn't find anything so what have you guys done? I could do a sandwich plate on the dash, but 1, that would be fugly and 2 that would be fugly! Suggestions? Pics?

jdjanda 09-20-2002, 08:54 AM I tried to do this on my Scout II, didn't have the time to do it so I had to skip it. I was going to notch the dash and run the bar tight to the windshield frame. Bring the bar down behind the dash and tie the dash supports into the bar. This would allow the dash to be removed.
onsafari 09-20-2002, 08:59 AM I did this to the TJ cage I just built. Instead of welding the front tubes directly to the foot plates I welded another piece of tube that would snuggly fit inside of the 1.75x.120 cage to the footplate and then ran a bolt between the both of them. This way I can pull the cage straight up out of the dash when ever I want. I hope this made sence :D

"buy everything YOU want NOW!"

ItsaCJ6 09-21-2002, 08:34 AM Make sure shes the one...... and then let her know that she needs to work...
I hate to say it, but if your woman don't work you will never have enough money to buy parts unless you make a fawking real good living.
(tip number one) no job: lots of time , time to got to the mall, time to go shopping, time to go out and buy lunch with freinds, time to do lots of money spending. while your work all day every day. but never enough time to have the house spotless. Time for her business endevers that you pay for and she looses money on. time to eat and get fat....
Make sure she has a good job and works just as much as you do. that way when your both off work, its play time for both of you...
Make sure before you get married, read above posts advice... Divorce is painfull and the wallet hurts for a long long time..

IronBenderII 09-21-2002, 09:00 AM uhhh guys, not to be a party pooper, but one of you muthas have the cage running through the dash?

Rockit 09-21-2002, 09:32 AM Why make it removeable? I've seen under that dash of yours, you'll never get it out of that web of wires! Just weld it in, through the dash, directly to the frame.

LOL I was thinking just that... and why couldn't ya use a poly bushing or such to create a "speration point"? Regardless you find a good way lemme know as I have to do the same thing on the new rig, and I have no other good ideas besides the seemingly lame one I just posted.
Thanks

IronBenderII 09-21-2002, 09:45 AM Man, bustin my balls...
The web of wires is being re-done. I'm moving the glove box over and putting a piece of sheetmetal back there to mount all of the solenoids and fuses to. Should be really clean.
Tx Outlaw 09-21-2002, 07:46 PM How about finding the right diameter tube that'll fit inside the tube you're running for the cage, cut a piece that you can weld inside the lower section (below or behind the dash) and leave a few inches sticking out for the upper part of the cage to slip over. Drill a hole thru the upper part and the inner sleeve, and install a pin or bolt.
Hope that makes sense. LOL!

IronBenderII 09-21-2002, 08:49 PM That seems to be the best way to do it. That's probably what I'll end up doing. I certainly want the cage removable...

Your going to trust a pin and bolt to hold the front hoop together? No thank you, no way to run a sold bar down behind the dash or is the goal to be able to remove the cage without pulling the dash?
Rockit 09-21-2002, 11:57 PM Narrow the dash so it fits between the cage. Of course, whatever you do won't stay that way for long, you'll decide you want to go a different route. Buggy.:flipoff2:
IronBenderII 09-22-2002, 01:15 AM well, the pin would be at the foot and I could reinforce the area so the metal doesn't tear. I'm not crazy about it either but yeah, I want to be able to seperate te dash and the cage if I need to. Maybe I'll just build it as once piece and cross the taking it out bridge if it comes...
-Jack
Rockit 09-22-2002, 01:32 AM When do you see pulling it out? My next cage is going to be a full weld in and I'll just notch the carpet to fit around it.
IronBenderII 09-22-2002, 02:22 AM replacing floor boards, putting the duraliner in, that sort of thing. I can probably just lift the cage up and work under it.
So when are you going to come over and help me build my cage?
-Jack
JOHNS351C 09-22-2002, 06:38 AM If you are going to use the pin idea use DOM tubing for your front bars to avoid the seam. 1 1/2 tubing will slide into 1 3/4 DOM .120 wall nicely just have your sleave about a foot long (6" into each side) and you wont have any strength problems.
geargrinder 09-22-2002, 08:36 AM Camburg makes some 4130 billet tube clamps. They weld into your tube and are keyed/bolted together. They are made to make cages removeable. It sounds like this is exactly what you wanted. I bet they are $$$. Here is a link.

IronBenderII 09-22-2002, 08:56 AM I hate sites that don't allow you to see a larger image or list prices. It's worthless if I have to call to place an order. I'll trade them some web development for some of those gizmos.

I'm not sure what I will have time for over the next few months, my wife of 12 years decided she wants a divorce. Have to deal with that.
:(
IronBenderII 09-22-2002, 09:38 AM Shit man, that sucks! I don't know what the f is going on but you are one of like 5 people that I know that are getting divorced. Including my uncle who was married for 30 years and raised 3 girls!
This means that you should probably come over and do the bbq thing and have a beer or two. Take your mind off of things or have somebody to talk it out.
