I tried to find this info on ih8mud & by trying to do a few searches but was unsuccessful...

What are the drive train differences & similarities between FJ40's & FJ55's?

I have a 73 40 that I am building up and in looking for springs I have found a parts 55 (unsure of the year) for $250 with a bad motor.

May sound strange but should I buy the entire pig, use the springs & then fill my shop up with a second set of parts (e.g., axles, tcase, seats, belts) before I give the carcass up to the rest of the club... Unfortunately keeping the entire 55 is not an option (appears that not all neighbors understand my hobby)

Drive train for similar year FJ40's and FJ55 are virtually the same. Driveshafts are diffrerent lengths, and FJ55 rear axles have sway bar mounts on them, they are physically interchangable. !975 was the first year for the 2F, so that might cahnge things a bit for the engine, and late 1973 saw the transition to 4 spd trannies.

If the FJ55 has A/C let me know, I have a '55 I want to put A/C in...

Thanks,
-Brett

so if the 55 has a 3sp trans / tcase they are the same as the 40 trans / tcase?

another couple things,...
-rear springs are longer w/centered centerpins
-front springs same length but also with cenered centerpins
-both 55 springs have larger bushings, both ID & OD & shoulders
-parking brake cable enters opposite side of t-case backing plate
-and another stupid un-important weird little thing,..on the front axle, the plate opposite the spring pad that prevents the long u-bolt from sliding down the diff is different than on 40's. Go figure?

I say keep the 55, ditch the 40 :fj: :D:

If they are both 3spds try/t-case ,they should be fine, any slight differences like DL bolt diam, and parking brake backing plate can be swiched around.
