I was told the 20-gallon tank is too wide to fit between the CJ frame rails. I believe the older 15-gallon is the same size as the CJ tank and will fit.

It should fit with the factory skid plate...from what I think. I've never done it, but if a YJ and a CJ7 tub are the same for mounting in the back the frame distances between cross-members should also be the same. I'm pretty sure the YJ tank has it's own skid plate that holds it up. If you could bolt that into the CJ frame then why not? I know the filler neck is on the opposite side, so some body modification will have to be done.
Hell do it and post pics :flipoff2:
Another option, CJs had a factory 20 gal plastic tank. Thats what I run in both of mine, and well they fit :flipoff2:

could be true. If you have the YJ tank and a CJ get a tape and figure it out.

The rear mounts for the CJ and YJ tubs are not the same. The distance between the CJ mounts is 43 1/2", and the YJ is roughly 45 3/16". The distance between the YJ frame rails is wider by a similar amount, which allows more room for a wider tank on the YJ than on the CJ.

but they make a 20gallon tank for the cj as well, so how does it fit within the cj rails?

i just went out and measuered..the inside distance from framerail to frame rail is about 32"....too bad i don't have a yj to compare

The CJ tank probably hangs down lower would be my guess. I've never had a YJ so I was just putting my 2 cents in. By the sound of thing, just find a 20 gal CJ tank. Kibley makes a :smokin: skid plate to hold up that tank too. Just saying.

i've been looking high and low for a 15gal gas tank for the 91-95 wrangler and have come up empty handed...however, after doing some research i've learned that chyrsler tried to cut corners between those years and actually used the same tank for 15gal and 20gal capacities...its a matter of cutting down the vent hose going into the tank that buys you the 5gal that chyrsler tried to cheap you out of...so i guess the 20 gal yj tank from 91-95 will fit in my jeep?

whats your plan as far as the filler neck being on the opposite side?
and yes the cj 20 gallon tank hangs lower

the length of the vent tube causes the gas pump to shut off sooner tricking it to think its a shallower 15 gallon tank. cut it shorter and you get to fill it up another 5 gallons

here is a link to it: http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/fuel/15to20gal/
not sure how legit it is but a few different sites claim the same thing...anyways the whole reason i'm going into this is because i want a factory style in-tank pump setup, and therefore need a gas tank with the sqare-retangular opening on top that came on the 91-95 yj's. anything prior to 91 had the regular round hole like my cj currently has. as far has the filler hoses being on the wrong side, my jeep will have full side/corner guards so i'll just buy the yj version

Thats ridiculous on Chryslers behalf...
