So I have had the front axle from my 73 scout II kicking around the shop for awhile, PO swaped it in, when I first got the scout I checked it out and it had 260x joints and discs so I assumed it was a D30. Well I have a fullsize D44 in the shop and noticed the diff covers are identical??? So does anyone know if IH put out a D44 with the small 260x joints? I though all D44 had the 297x joints?? Asked elsewhere and no one seems to know?

*shouldn't* be that way, as far as I know. D30's and D44's have different splines, so the shafts arn't interchangable. SO it mush be some sort of weird freak.

Not to sound like an ass, but how are you sure they are 260 joints?, is the perch cast into the diff, with a one HUGE u-bolt going around it, or is it more like on the tube (D30 actually have a "case-in" perch as well, but not like the D44's...

curious, 8-bolt IH brakes?? Pull a shaft and count the splines. 31 or 27?

I've seen IH D44s with 260x U-joints.

Seems to be the 71-73 drum brake HD upgrade Dana 44s that have 'em.

Naturally, the shafts interchange with the 74-80 disc brake D44s.

I've also seen some D30's with discs around that year.

I HAVE a Dana 30 with discs from around that year. Some 74's came with D30/drum, some came D30/disc, and some came D44/Disc. To my knowledge, there were no D44/Drum axles in 74.

I pulled apart a front closed knuckle 44 on a jeep truck (60's) today at a upull it for the 4.27 ring and pinion and the ujoints were tiny little things. I'm sure they were 260. I used to have a 1974 dana 30 with discs, it had the big shafts but they were turned down to fit the 30 carrier.

well you know how folks "elsewhere" are obsessed with the whole IH production trivia, I should have known that I couldn't get an answer, had to fall back on POR :D

As for being sure, I happen to have 260x's and 297x's laying around the shop. Side by side it is pretty clear which is which. The perch is cast into the diff with the fawked up ubolt. 8 bolt spindles.

I have not gotten to pulling the shaft yet, too busy bobbing my POS. Trying to get ready for a run on Thursday, and I got no fuel tank and 2/3rds of the bed is laying on the shop floor. *cough, cough* I might be getting sick here in the office ;)
