: Which port is which on ported steering gear?

I've been gathering parts to do a hydro assist for some time and now Moab time is fast approaching.

I ported and rebuild a Dakota box. Everything is ready to hook up and I just realized I don't remember which port has pressure then you turn right, etc.

With my luck, I will get it backwards and I was really hoping to avoid cracking the system and dumping fluid all over the place. Anybody got a pix or some info.

Thanks.

Sorry, I kept searching and finally found a reference.

You just bolt it up, if it doesn't work right, swap the lines. :D

50% chance of getting it right the first time.

X2

also you are going to need to cycle the ram a bunch to get air out and fluid moving - do not be alarmed if at first the ram is non responsive... turn wheel lock to lock multiple times with someone watching the front end

The BOTTOM hole in the tapped steering box (if you tapped it correctly with a top and a bottom when the box is bolted up) goes to the port closest to the actual ram shaft.

Kinda hard to see here, but the BOTTOM hole on the box is going to the left port as pictured.(closest to ram shaft:flipoff2:)

in all honesty, i dont think most people have a clue. just hook em up. if it turns, you got it right. if it whines, you got it backwards.

most important thing is making sure you drill, and tap good, and keep as much debris out of the box as possible

what i did for that, was drill 1 port at a time. when i was starting to get through into the port, i grabbed the pitman arm and turned it untill fluid shot out, and repeated the same thing for the other side.

it wasnt a full proof method, but between that and geasing the tap, i kept it pretty clean

Max you fail.:flipoff2: What if the ram is turned 180 degrees from how you installed yours?

The bottom hole is for turning right. This is how mine is done.

On a Saginaw type steering gear the port that is on the centerline of the casting is the one that gets the pressure when you are turning left.

Leave the ram unconnected from the axle when you first test it.
