I got a blast cabinet a while back and am just now getting around to setting it up. Anyone got any recommendations on blasting media, some friends recommend black magic while others swear by glass beads. any suggestions ?

What are you blasting?
Steel or alum or both?
What are you trying to remove? Paint? Rust?

steel
both paint and rust, I take it by the way you asked that question that different media are better for one or the other. right ?

I have a book on blasting cabnets. I was going to build one from a 55 gallon drum. It had a bucj of good info on media. I'll start looking for it.
Here are the most common types
Sand
Aluminum Oxide
Silicon Carbide
Garnet
Glass Beads
Black Magic
Walnut Shells
Plastic Pellets

cool. i've got a pressure blaster and have always used sand (which makes a huge/dusty/dangerous to breath mess) but got this cheapo blast cabinet and had heard about using different media.

Menards here in Indy sells Black Magic, which i believe is a type of mill-slag. its fairly coarse and stays sharp for a few uses. typical silica sand loses its sharpness after 3-4 uses and give you lung problems. i use Black Magic or glass bead (on stainless).
