3fifty 09-28-2009, 09:43 PM I dont think its Pirate worthy yet but Id like some opinions on it as I get it to that point.

3fifty 09-28-2009, 09:43 PM Ive dropped this ledge numerous times. No big deal.
http://crawlinrocks.com/xj/albums/uploadpics/DSC01758.jpg
Except this time I hit the front hitch a little too hard.
Thats what was left of my airbag after I cut it out.

The first cuts the deepest. no turning back now.

I put some 6" LED's in. They are supposed to be turn/stop/tail. When I wired them up though the turn signal stops working when the brake is applied. I plan on wiring up a second set of small amber LED's for just the turn signals.

3fifty 09-28-2009, 09:44 PM Moved it to the house until I get my steel ordered this week sometime.
3fifty 09-28-2009, 09:47 PM Ive been reading this (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=507763&highlight=111%22+stretch) thread and have gotten some great ideas from it. The rear cargo area will get the same basic design with a little more reinforcement.
Plan to copy a few things for sure.

XJben 09-29-2009, 09:12 AM why did you draw a curvy line on the rear fenders, and then follow that line for the cut? seems to me that straight lines and cuts would have been better. looks like you messed up on purpose.
fortCollinsZJ 09-29-2009, 09:39 AM Looks to me like he created a new fender line with the cut following a different radious than the previous door/fender line, not using the damn door as a part of the fender line.
EDIT: I should add he did this on purpose to make the rear well look alot cleaner than most WB stretches.
fatwreck 09-29-2009, 10:31 AM You need a trailer wiring harness to get the tail lights and turn signals to work right. I recommend this one: Drawtite 18130.

I scribbled a line on there as a guide of where I wanted to cut. I used a sawzall and purposely cut to much. I will go back and cut even with the body line with a jigsaw to straighten it out and make it cleaner.

1992xj 09-29-2009, 09:12 PM Look at the third pic down in my build thread that a buddy posted for me. You can't see the front hangers but you can kinda get an idea of how much they moved in in relation to the diff....

DutchVDub 10-14-2009, 08:29 PM Nice work so far, definately looks a lot better now that you've cleaned up the cuts.
glp86 10-15-2009, 12:17 AM Did you shat your pants when that airbag hit you in the face? Haha I bet that was a surprise!

Gonna start on the backside of them tomorrow.
WA-HCRC 10-19-2009, 07:15 PM are you plannin on 44" tires or reverse portals? maybe a frame notch? im confused as to were all the inner fenderwell space is going to do you good. it looks like your cut line on your rear quarter panel is a good 4 inches lower than the top of the inside of the tub. Lost interior space.
Im strictly trying to be constructive.

Im planning on 39's within the year if I can get my hands on some 60's along with the stretch. If not, itll be next winter. Your correct I didnt cut to the same height as the top of the tub. I was going to run the tubs to the lowest point but the surface on top would not have been very wide. Since I moved it up to below the window seal I gained about 3" in width. I plan on mounting my ammo cans on them and now they are wide enough for that.
I appreciate the constructive comments, believe me, Ive never done anything like this. Im sure it shows.
greenxj513 10-19-2009, 07:37 PM good shit dude. quite the little undertaking haha, i'll deff be checking in on this build as you continue. you can never cut too much!!!!!
3fifty 10-21-2009, 10:20 PM Started on the reverse lights tonight. No pics yet, just started cutting into the hatch. Ill post pics when its done.

3fifty 10-22-2009, 08:34 AM Damn thats a pretty good idea. I already fished lines through the opening though.
3fifty 10-22-2009, 04:42 PM Got the reverse lights suck in tonight. Got a little paint started. Not much in the way of progress tonight.
Still have to wire reverse lights, enclose gas tank, finish forward caps on tubs, and run the filler neck to the outside.

bitchofanxj 10-23-2009, 09:22 AM That is sweet, looks like those reverse lights came from the factory that way. I like it.
3fifty 10-23-2009, 12:02 PM Figured I should try to put the rear seat up to make sure it lateched before I finished that part of the tubs. Glad I did. It doesnt latch. This is a major problem since my kids love to be in the Jeep as well.
Trying to figure out how to relocate the latches forward a bit more in a safe way.
3fifty 10-23-2009, 12:14 PM This will take care of it.
http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoSpareWheel32inch.htm
WA-HCRC 10-23-2009, 03:53 PM i think you can flip over the factory metal tank straps to get rid of those nylon straps, or just make some new metal ones.
3fifty 10-23-2009, 06:00 PM i think you can flip over the factory metal tank straps to get rid of those nylon straps, or just make some new metal ones.
I actually planned on using the metal straps. I cut holes in the new floor so that I can acess the same mounting points as well. These are just temporary as I have to pull it back out again in order to finish the cage around the tank.

dont bump your thread till you have updates :flipoff2:  I came in here expecting big things. :flipoff2:
3fifty 11-18-2009, 03:31 PM Nothing big to report. Making steady progress.
Side view. Not even close to done. Still need the tube fenders and the stretch done as well as tucking up the wires.
http://www.crawlinrocks.com/xj/albums/uploadpics/turns/DSC01046.JPG
Added these for turns. I dont really like them or the layout but they will work.
http://www.crawlinrocks.com/xj/albums/uploadpics/turns/turns.JPG
http://www.crawlinrocks.com/xj/albums/uploadpics/turns/turns2.JPG
A very rough mock up of the back of the tubs. I cut into them so the rear seat could actually latch instead of relocating the latch mounts.
http://www.crawlinrocks.com/xj/albums/uploadpics/turns/roughmock.JPG
Cut the tubs. Angled them back to let the seat come back all the way.
http://www.crawlinrocks.com/xj/albums/uploadpics/turns/reartub.jpg
http://www.crawlinrocks.com/xj/albums/uploadpics/turns/seats.jpg
Going to paint everything tommorow and possibly start on caging the tank.
WA-HCRC 11-18-2009, 04:04 PM Napa sells some 10 LED Signal stat lights that are WAY WAY WAY brighter than the single LED's. If those are incandescents (standard bulbs) they might be about the same light output.
These are the ones i use for the same size hole-
Signal stat 3050A 5111 12v
They even have A DOT stamp on them.
3fifty 11-18-2009, 04:14 PM Cool, thanks! I didnt look around much.
These are LED's and DOT approved as well. I havent wired them up yet so I dont know how bright they are, but Im sure they arent. Ill check out what you recommended though. These are single LED and Id like to have multiple.
WA-HCRC 11-18-2009, 04:25 PM I've got two per side to blind people when i am turning :lmao: IIRC they are about 13 bucks a peice. The singles werent bright enough to see in daylight. if they are still new i would recommend returning them. I almost got rear ended a few times because of the single LED turns.

Ill probably do what most people do and chop about an inch or so off the bottom of the doors. Thats down the road though. I need to finish this first.
Thanks again for the links!

3fifty 01-22-2010, 08:42 PM Its sitting with a for sale sign on it. :flipoff2:
Still waiting to find a great deal on a front 60. I should probably just go with 44's and 33's so I can wheel this summer though.
ONEtonXJ 01-22-2010, 08:50 PM reverse lights = FAWESOME!!

3fifty 03-27-2010, 08:19 PM Just a little update its been awhile.
I bought a 8 lug D44 to match the 14b I had and then decided I wouldnt be happy with it and needed to start doing more maintenance and preparation for the tons. So I sold them.
Bought a Winch bumper and Winch. Not sure how Im going to like the loss of approach angle up front. Ill decide after a few trips if Im going to keep it or not.
http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z10/mykalj/Jeep/XJ/WinchBumper/winch4.jpg
Bought some Ruff stuff frame stiffeners and 5"x3"x3/16" rectangle steel for rear bumper and boat sides. Got a great deal on NIB Clayton LA's so I grabbed those up as well.
Maintenance wise all hell broke loose. Radiator broke, replaced it, motor mount and tranny mount broke within 10 miles of the new one being put in and busted it with the fan clutch. Water pump went out as well.
Long arms and stiffeners should be on by Monday evening.

Why did you feel it was nessicary to cut that much off that back? Am I missing the part where you intending to run 50's? If you where concerned about uptravel and tire contact, then you didn't think this out too well. To each his own, but you got way to carried away with that.
Here's mine... Straight comp cut out the back with the top of the original fender line. I have about 7" of up travel and at full bump and about 1/2" away from contact.

Alot of the inner sheet was rusted but also planning for the future. I plan to stretch the rear out and run 40's at some point. The only part you probably missed is the part where I said I have never done this before. Dont expect it to be perfect, cookie cutter or how you would of done it. Im learning as I go, maybe the next one wont be so high. :smokin:

3fifty 03-29-2010, 04:31 PM The frame rails are so mangled that its hard to get the stiffeners close enough to weld on. Only got half of one stiffener on today. Tips? I need to spread the uni frame rails out in spots in order to contact the stiffeners.

Echo4charlie 04-07-2010, 08:17 PM I am just happy that Greatwhite finally stopped farming Pigs and bought a digital camera and posted a pic of his "driveway ornament"
Tagmaster11 04-08-2010, 06:56 AM I'm a newbie so I hope this is not too much of a stupid question. Are the frame stiffeners custom built or did you order a kit from some where? I ask because I am going to start a build of an 88 Cherokee and was thinking about putting a Scout II frame under it, but if I can’t find one affordable the stiffeners might work.
3fifty 05-01-2010, 06:25 PM This is the rear section of frame on the drivers side. The hole in the frame is where the fuel tank filler hose used to pass through.
Im planning to throw some box inside the frame rail and plate the outside. Thoughts?

http://www.crawlinrocks.com/hosted/xj/framecrack2.jpg
whitneyj 05-01-2010, 08:47 PM box on inside and plate the outer sounds like a good idea if there's enough material left to weld to. Is that from rust?
Forget that, backhalf it :D
WA-HCRC 05-01-2010, 10:31 PM My rear bumper insertion peices go like 24" inside the "uni-rail" :D welded to the whole like a huge rosette with 1/8" plate all over it. I used .120 2x4 inside the rail.
EDIT- oh yea, that sheetmetal liner in the oval hole is a BITCH to get out.
3fifty 05-02-2010, 04:31 AM box on inside and plate the outer sounds like a good idea if there's enough material left to weld to. Is that from rust?

Its not rusted very badly but there is some surface rust. Mostly due to dropping off rock ledges and landing on the rear bumper I believe.
My rear bumper insertion peices go like 24" inside the "uni-rail" :D welded to the whole like a huge rosette with 1/8" plate all over it. I used .120 2x4 inside the rail.
EDIT- oh yea, that sheetmetal liner in the oval hole is a BITCH to get out.
My rear bumper insert ends where the crack on the bottom is. I notched the 2x3 to slide under that to catch one more bolt hole. Ill extend it.

Sold my Stock daily driver XJ and I bought a 5.9 ZJ on 33's.

Had a good friend weld the frame up on the trail XJ with some support in Nov of '10.

Then I sold the 5.9 in Dec '10 and bought a serious POS 2.5L YJ.

I traded the YJ in on a TJ. 1" lift, 245's. D30/D35 Rusted and broken frame.

In January of '11 I had a mishap while recovering another Jeep.

So I got pissed at it and scrapped it.

I really miss having a daily driver (the 5.9) and having the XJ to beat on. I dont like the TJ at all. Mainly due to space issues and having 3 kids.
So to recap, the XJ is scrapped.

I miss it every time I wheel the TJ honestly. The fuckin TJ breaks a lot. The XJ didnt.

The tub is starting to show the rust. Mainly in the wheel wells in front of the rear tires. I need to cut out the bad spots and patch them at some point before I sell it, trade it, or junk it.
