: ported my HJ60 box for hydro
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 04:12 PM ok...well at the risk of letting the cat out of the bag...
i have drilled my power steering box, its a 60 series, HJ/FJ all the same, and was very easy
copy what the minitruck guys do to the IFS box, the similarities between the two are amazing, in fact, im almost willing to bet the internals are intercahngeable, the bolt pattern is all that is different
with a little help from MATT H.
i think he posts as thelakerat
from westtexasoffroad..... i emailed him and being so far away (im in AUS, he's in texas) he just told me exactly where to drill it..
well, if you drill too far on the top mount you will destroy you steering box, so be careful, or just pay him to do it
i think westtexas off road and rockstomper both do kits, these seem very worthwhile, and well done, i wish someone down under offered a similar service, maybe one day when the demand gets up there :(
anyhow, id have pics for you all but my digi cam has gone on the blink...and im not sure if you would be all that interested...but if there is some interest, ill take pics and scan them in
cheers
rob
haven't tested it yet...but its all a relative thing...we are waiting on parts
Jason M 09-20-2002, 04:35 PM I love waiting on parts ;)
Cool, you finally did it!!!
Get the ram yet?
samiguy 09-20-2002, 04:50 PM I would like pics, thinking of doing the same...

sorry dude, i think half of all 4 wheel driving is about waiting, and stuff not bolting together and not fitting properly, and having minor shit go wrong  :D
6" stroke by 1.5" bore
7/8" rod, and 1/4" BSP or NPT fittings, i'm not sure....my mate greg (1madengineer is organising the hydraulic side)
thanks champ :D
good luck getting it going!!

have you got a 60 series box?
if yes, then i'll get some pics
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 05:27 PM digicam is working
ill go get the pics for y'all :flipoff2:
whether you like it or not!!
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 05:40 PM okay this shows the hole to be drilled in the top port, and this can only go down to the pressure port that is already there, if you go too far you could wreck the box
here it is straight from the horses mouth:
"Oh, almost forgot. The spot on the side that I indicated will just have a large cavity behind it but the spot on top is a little different. There is actually a fluid passage that is what you will be tapping into, not the actual cavity below it. So be careful not to drill all the way through. You can see the passage when the box is disassembled. You need to make sure that you line your drill up so that it will intersect with that passage and then after you put in your fitting you need to make sure that you didn't block the passage with the threads on the fitting. Sorry about almost forgetting to tell you that. I sure would hate to hear that you screwed up that box.
Matt.
West Texas Offroad"
and for nothing, but his own satisfaction, he helped me out...so obviously i am biased and think he is a champ!! but there you have it!! so get your hydro from this guy! :D
thats one side!
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 05:42 PM front side, straight into the port where it says
TOYODA :p
i drilled through one of the 0's instead of centre punching and it looks nice and neat :D almost factory even!! it says t0yoda
NO BOOTIE FAB ON ME!! :flipoff2:
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 06:07 PM oh yeah and cause my 60 series pitman arm connects with the spring pack BAD under compression (due to dead flat springs and stuff) i needed to change the pitman arm
the pictured replacement is from a 75 series:
BJ On Roids 09-20-2002, 06:16 PM another comparo, should get me a bit more clearance!! :D ;)
the splines on the arm, are the same from an:
40 series
60 series
75 series
80 series
IFS mini box
and even a PIG :oink oink:
so get into it!!
that 75 and 80 series ones are the flattest and run around $149 AUS from toyota new, obviosuly i went with junkyard for $30!! ;)
Jason M 09-20-2002, 09:27 PM Padder.... :flipoff2:
Good job.
Matt is a seriously stand up guy. I would recommend him to anyone!
And I thought your rig was pure booty fab!!!
fj40tom 09-20-2002, 10:45 PM I NEED a 75 series pitman arm!!!! I guess I will have to look into an 80 series though.
I am interested to hear how the tapped 60 box works out.........
tp
gunracer1 09-21-2002, 07:31 AM thanks for posting the pix, i have been waiting for someone to do it first. i was afraid of screwing up a good box. thanks mike
samiguy 09-21-2002, 11:03 AM BJ, thanks for the pics, they help alot. Yes I am putting a FJ60 steering box and axles in my sami.
BJ On Roids 09-21-2002, 03:54 PM i will let you all know, how it works and holds up!!

yeah, thanks jason, you are the guy who put me on to him!!!
and awesome work, took me a fair bit to get the curry (ballsack) to rip it apart and start drilling, but the time has come to take it all to the next level........
bootie fabbed?
SHHHHHHH
i dont want everyone to find out my rig is a bootie FABbed POS!!!
bootie fab = aussie for ''redneck"
hehehehe
i got some awesome booty fab bead removal pics to show you guys..... too wait till monday though ;)

what do you need the arm for?
i only needed it cause the pitman arm dragged the spring on compression
if the md11fr8dawg comes down under again, he could pick one up from toyota for $179 or soemthing like that......
thats new....
and thats the GO, unless you get one nice and cheap over there
gunracer1 09-21-2002, 04:19 PM hey that bootie fab shit is giving us rednecks a bad rap

He needs it for the same reason you did, he is finishing up his SO and frame stretch (like Nolens) and he has the FJ60 steering and it is dragging on the spring pack.........
Butch
Damn dude you told me you were going to fit HYRO steering not this Bootie Fab Shnit :flipoff2:

i figured the 'HYRO' would have some dificulties operating, seeing as the steering box need some back pressure to activate the pressure sides, and push the ram, although for all the updates on the hyro, go talk to the guy with the missing teeth, you know who i mean!! :flipoff2:
bootie fab, DAMN did i get some cool pics on the weekend:
booty fab bead removal with a 15tonne front end loader
booty fabbed rust repair on a "hoopty" 60 series
WOODEN (thats right made from trees) sliders and sidesteps for a FJ60
AWESOME!! :D man, we have more rednecks than i thought
i also saw this idiot, and he was too cheap to buy spacers or the right wheels, so he had rim GAPS, no joke, just welded the centre section to a piece of flat bar  he looked gay though, so i stayed well clear!! :p and his car was "sponsored" by some racing team or other, and they MAKE spacers, id hate to know if this booty engineering was actually for sale :flipoff2:
got some pics of your new tyres tony?
im guessing you saw mine up there?!!! ;)
getting more wear
38s, are sooo last year:D
Who was using your tyres up there?
Uhhh i know which ones you meen they still have the teats on them they are not wearing fast at all.
Ring Gaps you say are they like this?
BJ On Roids 09-23-2002, 03:16 PM hey!!
that doesnt look as bad as it sounded on the phone :D
looks pretty good actually
hey, do you know how/why your ARB broke?
DAM
BJ On Roids 10-21-2002, 05:08 PM im dredging this beast up, cause i am nearly finished it!
have done the wheels for my 42s, the 10s have exactly 2" of backspacing, so with the 60 series axles under my rig it should give me some awesome stabilty...maybe :D (compared to a 40) but not compared to big chevys!
NOW, the FJ60 hydro assist, ram assist, steering box porting, HJ60... WHATEVER :flipoff2:
is fully complete, i am going to run the standard toyota pump for the time being to see if it will work, if not, thn i have a saginaw pump on the floor that i will try and adapt to it..... i have a new...larger reservoir for the power steering (hydraulic) fluid, and you need to increase the amount of fluid in your system by:
rod diameter times rod length, so in my case 7/8 by 6" for the stroke and piston size......
i am going with a 5 litre tank, (overkill, and DIRT cheap) which will have small filter, i am running the standard power steering cooler, but may got to a auto tranny cooler if i need it. I need to rebuld the pump, cause it was FAWKED, and then its GO...
i have 33mm solid bars for my tie rods, with FJ80 tie rod ends, and as stated previously 75 series pitman arm for greater frame clearance...... high steering which is a copy of OTT, and ill get some photos of all the mounts and everything in place hopefully this weekend!!
man excitement
and a big thanks to greg:
1madengineer for all his help and stuff, a few late nights, going through the rebulding, and the drilling and telling me to not attack it with a hammer!! :D
pics coming!!!
