heres what i have in my 78 f150

front high pinion dana 44 w/ lockout hubs
New Process 203 transfer case

isnt this a mismatched pair?
i'm under the impression the np203 is a full time transfer case.
and im also under the impression that my front axle with lockout hubs is a part time axle, which is what the lockouts are for.

wtf?
i got this truck for free from my uncle, so im not complaining. he told me that he replaced the t-case a while back, about 8 years ago. did he get the wrong t-case? is the front axle supposed to be a fulltime axle? i know the lockouts work, because when its unlocked i can spin the front d-shaft by hand, when its locked, i cant.

is this NP203/ Part time HPD44 set up normal?
please shed some light on this for me.
thanks in advance.

part time kits are normal to find in 203.

what does the 203 part time kit consist of? is it just the part time axle? there is nothing between the tcase and the axle except for the driveshaft.

the part time kit is in the transfercase itself. has nothing to do with the front axle.

i dont fully understand the workings of that fulltime case but have heard enough about it. basically it works kinda like your rear axle does. if you park one tire on ice and the other on dry ground. all the power goes to the one on the ice. that transfercase works the same way. it sends power to the front or back which ever has the least resistance.

so one way to check is unlock your hubs and put the shifter in all the locations. if it drives with just the rear then you got 2wd.

on my part time np203 2wd was pull the lever allllllll the way back, that will be 4high. then push it forward one, that will be 2wd.

it could have the flanges removed and lockouts put on it.

Like a big 84 said, if it drives in hi with the front hubs unlocked, then it has the part time kit.
