all mine were covered in metal shart. trying to get the shart off with a rag or another magnet seemed futile, then I grabbed a chunk of duct tape. rolled magnet on the sticky side and bam, looked spanky new.:smokin:

so simple, so easy. :homer:

Nice tip. I dropped a tap past the underseat tank in my A1 this morning, so I busted out the S-K magnet. It wouldn't drop between the tank and the well. Dug into the box for the $2.99 parts store special magnet, and it pulled it right out! Off to the garage to clean them both with your tip. :thumbs up:

Also, if you are having trouble getting the magnet to the part because it sticks to other thing, try adding a couple of turns of duct tape to the sides, leaving the end open. It will give you a little distance between the magnet and the things that you don't want it to stick to so that you can push it on past. Be sure that you take the tape off after you are finished. Otherwise it will make your magnet a gooey mess.

High pressure air works easier without having to deal with the tape. :flipoff2:

I keep my magnet wrapped in a shop rag. When I need the metal to be cleaned off I just remove the rag while holding the magnet over the garbage can. Nice clean magnet every time.

So you guys use your magnets with a plastic bag or shop rag wrapped around them? we got to be talking about different size magnets.

Do not blast air onto them, you run the risk of blasting small steel slivers all over the place, and if you aren't careful, your eyes.

Nothing wrong with a blast of air, good god. I wear safety glasses just about the whole time I'm in the garage and I do it out side where I don't care where it goes. You can close your eyes and turn your head too, there very tine shards of material. I have been using high pressure air to blow my dirty clothes off and clean things for 25 or more years, never been hurt.

Now if you hold the nozzle pointing straight at your face and blow the magnet right into your open eyes then sure, you might not want to do that, cause that would be a dumbass move now wouldn't it :flipoff2:
