The very early 78's has course spline pinions and 4.11 gears and the rest of that year had fine spline 4.11's.

The '78 model year was the longest run of any FJ-40 model as they went into 79 since that was the year they redesigned the FJ-40.

In '79 the 3rd members went to 3.70 and stayed that way in all US models until the FJ-62.

Actually 78 was the first year for the fine splined, only year for 4.11 FJ40's
79-87 was fine 3.73
88-what ever the last year of the FJ80 was 4.11
So good donors are all the FJ62's ,1978 40's & 55's and the rears of the 80's
BTW the 78's are the only year using the smaller, old style flange the others will require die grinding or re drilling to the smaller pattern

I have pulled apart two 1978 FJ40 diffs. The 12/77 had course spline pinion shafts, and the 3/78 had fine spline. I "think" I remember reading that the midyear change to fine splines in 78 occurred in 1/78. But don't quote me.

Hey Fish,

You should tell your friend to put the fine spline in the rear and coarse in the front.

Sorry I was ass u mee ing we all knew that after 79 fine splines were used. It was answered in previous posts.

Yes i Was bragging:rolleyes:

It was my misunderstanding for some time that fine sp 4:11 were specific to mid/late 78 only and thus very rare. i now know much different. Like aftermarket 4:11 are fine spline.

To ask another ? anyone seen any or many Fine spline pinions break??

Sure I have seen fine spline pinions break! If you have a good anti-wrap bar you will seriously limit the breakage, but the pinion is still small.....
