It's probably a better idea to take the grip off and support the whole thing with a block of wood before hammering at it. Also a good idea to not use a BFH on that particular part... :flipoff2:

small hammer, small punch. the pin was coming out and then this happened. i had it supported with something under it that i rigged up, but apparently that wasnt good enough at all....

You have two options.

1. Throw that lower away and get another one.

2. Replace your grip with one that has an integral trigger guard such as the Magpul Miad, or the Stark.

This is a pretty common problem with the folks over at arf, you really have to be careful when messing with removing or installing that rollpin.

stark looks like what i am leaning toward now. that way i dont need to get the FCG out of my AR and swap it over (even though i do have an extra parts kit laying around)

Take it over to Halogrinders house, a solution will be reached.:flipoff2:

Happened to Pete; I offered to try and TIG it back for him, but have since read a lot about the unweldability of 7075. IIRC, he put a Magpul grip on and called it good.

Fortunately (or not) my budget has kept me from building a fleet of AR's--when you don't have very many, and you don't mess with them very often, it's hard to mess them up.

I'm no better, I tapped all of mine 4-40 and just use a stud on each side. No roll pins.

Even better, sold it when things were crazy and no one had lowers for my cost :D

Knock on wood i only have done that once. Figure I have assembled over 500 lowers.

I did have a grip screw snap on me recently.
It snpped right at the base of the screw head so I was able to get a pair of channel locks on the stub.

And that snapped. Seems like the stainless steel was incredably brittle.

I should have stopped there and sent the whole thing to stag. but I didn't. Put it in the drill press vise and procedded to try and drill it out.
Of course the bit walked.

So now the receiver is hidden away in a dark corner. :D

I used the MIAD extended grip. Ground down the broken "piece" flat and non-jagged.

see, from what i have seen searching the only thing that will actually cover it is the stark grip. the miad grip doesnt look like it will cover up the break. anyone have a picture of what theirs looks like? because i am looking to go the stark route.

JB Weld and put the pin back in. Clamp it together then sand down and coat with Moly or Duracoat.

Happend to my YHM lower. My fix is holding up great so far.

This is what I was going to suggest, plus the magpul MAID grip.

Edited to add that this is what my buddy did to fix the same problem on his AR.

I'd go STARK. I like the full MIAD kit and large hand swells. Here's a pic of mine.....but this is my parts bin pieces and such miscut gas port upper we all cabbaged on beater AR. I have very little intentional money in this AR so I could care less what it looks like. I treat it like an old shotgun.

Looks like the web of your hand is lower on that grip, then any other type of AR.
You would be pulling down, not straight to the rear.

i have long fingers. so i dont think it will be a problem. but i was reading about some people saying it takes some getting used to because of the angle not being the regular 30*, this one being 15*.

i think i will go with the stark. if i had the stuff (air brush, duracoat and money to buy both) i might consider going the way Flex said and do the repair and repaint. but alas, i dont.
