: Welding to axle housing on 96 Disco

Got a few questions as I prepare for my 3 link project

Is it safe to weld to the housing while it is still assembled. Is draining the oil in the dif enough since I intend to be welding right on top of the diff housing. How thick is the metal aroung the diff housing and how thick are the axle tubes. Thanks guys. Flame on.

The tubes are about 1/4" thick. Are you gonna get it hot enough to distort seals/bearings? If so, tear it down at least partially.

Your fine. Oil and all.

If you are concirned about it, lay one bead at a time and then allow to cool to the touch. It will take a long time.

edit: Were talking brackets right? Not some truss or other big item?

Not to mention avoiding warping the housing!

A lnk tower, I wont be building a truss but I was going to add significant bracing to it. Dont ever want to have to worry about it. I was considering incorporating a diff gaurd as well.

Real estate beneath Rovers is at a premium, is there room for all of that?

keep it simple!

I have taken some prelim measurements and it looks good. It has a 5" lift. I think I am OK as long as my bump stop is set right to stop the up travel.

Assuming you are centering the 3rd link it will run just to the inside of the 3rd member; you will cook the gasket/sealer. Pull it so you can get a good weld and reseal it so it won't leak.

Cool thanks.

You will find out if your diff breather is blocked at least. If it is it will pop an oil seal and make a mess. you will hear it when it pops. Hope fully it wont spew oil. Check your breather before you start. Believe me , I know, dont ask how.

thanks BBT nice tip. I actually was initially concerned about the oil catching fire, no oxygen so I guess not an issue.
