: One more year delay

Oh well, My Son and I have decided to wait one more year to run the Rubicon. The vehicle has been across many times but I am not quite happy
with our mods yet. Still having issues with the fuel injection and I havn't had enough "behind the wheel" trail time to be comfortable. Even in a Jamboree environment. We have hiked the trail , so we know what we're up against.
Hope it's still there in 11.

Yep. Run it, break down, walk out. Its all about just being there. Even a crappy weekend on the trail is worth it. Or atleast the story is worth it. About how you had to fix this or that. Good times.

Like the others said, run the bugger! I'll bet Barb will get in contact with you, Extra VEs are at a premium. I still need to get around to upgrading so we have another Extra VE.

Dude, gearing wise you're set up better than me , and I go every year, the jambo will get you in and out, dont let your boy down, reward him for all the work he's helped you with. I had 2 guys from Conn. in a stock 2006 wrangler on 33's follow us in this year and they did great. They had only read about the 'Con. SOOOOOO lets do it!!!

X2 I drove my rig up there for the first time this year right after I did the SAS and I broke a drive line, and didn't even make it to ellis. Had a great time during that trip and got to drink a lot and hiked up to LS with my buddies which in turn help in getting me fix to drive out.

My first trip through... mostly stock FJ40 (PS conversion, 2.5" lift, 33" tires). I lost my clutch slave at Buck... traded  for a replacement and kept on wheeling... No lockers, no gears, no clue what I was getting into... I had a blast :D

X infinity. My first trip was on Sunday, 10/4, Our team leader broke on the way up, then again in the Gatekeeper. we didn't even make it through there, and it was still worth the trip. I'd go again at the drop of a hat.The Rubicon is not about making it through , it's about being there, with family or friends, just the experience. Get out there.

I hope to see you there.

The vehicle is close to being where I want it, I'm just having some issues with the Howell TBI dialing it in. I'm more concerned with my lack of HD rock experience.
Plus my son will at least have one year of driving under his belt so he can do some driving too if I wait. If I don't he will be getting his license like one week before the Jambo.

Don't be concerned about the experience or lack there of, find a seasoned group to go with, plenty of folks on here would help you out (Myself included). As for your son driving on the trail, this has been discussed here before:) At the very least let's get that thing up in the snow:)

But I really think you need more communications....lmao wtf?

Ha ha, that an ACS 1000 cross communications platform.
All VHF, UHF, HI- low, trunked and apco 25 digital can be patched to one another. It's a mandate from DHS that all urban areas have some form of
interoperability on the communication end. This is one patchwork answer where there are many different types of local communication.
Got to be a rocket scientist just to operate the damn thing.

Your son almost has his license and has never wheeled?? My daughter could outwheel most newbs when she was 9. Now she sits there and watches drivers and asks " Dad, why is he on that rock when he could drive over there?"

Keep up a conversation here, and you will have all the experience you need when you come. Personally, I think it is much easier guiding people that can actually speak english. I have guided many international trips and that is something to try to do!

Like the others have said, just DO IT! There are plenty of veteran wheelers here that would be more than happy to personally guide you and your son on your first Rubicon trip. IMO, this is the best time of year to experience the trail. Chilly nights and mild days, fewer users and campfire restrictions have been lifted. Sounds like a good time for a little father and son bonding :)

No matter when you decide to go, be sure to take one of us up on the offer to join you on your first run. We were on a run 2 weeks ago when Curley and his crew ran into a guy that was by himself with a broken Sammi that needed a welder. Well, Curley and the guys had the tools and experience to repair the rig and send the happy wheeler on his way. It just doesn't get any better than that :smokin:

I don't blame you for not going if you don't have the confidence in your vehicle and abilities. Get to your local "spot" and get that fuel injection issue worked out. Couple of hours of crawling and getting the feeling of your vehicle on an angle and you should be good to go. You will be very surprised how quickly you will adapt to the feeling and how quickly you will learn the motions. I would not wait until next year...

John, Mill Valley is a fair bit far from here BUT I can always use another Extra on my "OHV" VE team. I run ham radio classes twice a year (Spring and Fall). I just ran one last Saturday (Oct 3). My VE session is Oct 17 in El Dorado Hills. Let me know if you're interested in joining the team!

While I would never encourage someone to take a rig to the trail that is questionable in the minds of the owner, I would suggest going if the reasons were related to worry over driving skilz.

JW has great sound advise here. A pleasant trip is worth its weight in gold. Work on the engine issues and go wheel! It should not take too long after sorting out the FI to see if it is stable enough for the trip. Like I sadi before, keep it up here and you will have all the experience you need when you get there.

Happy Trails, scott
