I need some opinions on tires for my FJ40. It is a '74 with the original F-engine. The engine runs good and has plenty of power, it has a Man-A-Fre header, Weber carb, etc. It has a Cruiser 4-speed transmission with a 3-speed t-case. I have 4 inch springs with the heavy duty Con-Fer shackles front and rear. I also have my rear wheel wells cut out, with UB40 flares. I am running 33s right now and have more than enough clearance, but want to go up in size. I really want to run 36x12.50 Swampers. What do y'all think about these tires? I want to hear opinions about clearance, power, potential breakages, etc. Also, are the SXs worth the $30 higher price? Thanks for any input.

check out the q78 swampers. Measure out at 35x11.5 roughly, and have deeper tread depth than the 36x12.5. Without gearing down your axles, streets will be a pain, but doable. I have a friend here with 38's on a SOA truck, but stock aside from that. if you do any highway driving, give gearing a thought.
You can probably clear the 36's, but they will most likely stuff under full flex. Depends on how hard you wheel it. That will determine breakage as well. Are you running a front locker? What kind of trails are you doing?

Go to intercotire.com to check out the specs on all of their tires.

For what its worth; For me in the North West driving in stick and root infested areas the extra thickness of the side walls is what sold me. One of my SX’s got a big chunk taken out of the side wall right in the “thin spot” in Moab this year. No sign of weakness or budging at all. (Its now on the back axle for safty!)
