: Stronger Diff Cover / Diff Slider ???

Hit a rock this weekend on the Dana 60. Amazingly enough, only tagged the cover inward and did not touch the ring gear :) I am now looking at getting / building a beefier cover.

Any diff covers / guards out there are better than the rest? I have seen the All Pro, Avalanch, and Missouri Off Road stuff .... What about building a skid pan for the diff? Maybe picking up on a few bolts on the cover, forming it under the diff and then a collar for the pinion end. (similar to what Mo Off Road does with there 14bolt diffs) I know that I would loose some ground clearance but it would provide a way to "slide" over a rock.

Beef up the cover and throttle over the diff hangers

Sean, what 60s are you running under that rig? I'm thinking about snagging some FSJ axles instead of wasting money on my stock shiat.

I've got to do the same thing to mine. Hit a rock last week end and stopped my rig cold. Gouged my tie rod pretty good (1.75 x 0.375) slid under it and into the cover. Just made a nice little dent but no ring gear contact. I'll probably just beat out the dent best I can and hammer out a piece of 2" x 0.250 strap to lay over the ring crown. I also want to fit some pieces around the bottom lip to help protect it too. Maybe recess the bolt heads and shave the lip while I'm at it. Ditto on the C14FF in the back along with more plate/strap on the cover to shore up that tin foil Corp cover back there (and keep the shaved lip from leaking).

Russ,

Are you thinking about making a kinda skid plate for the diff or just more of a ramp for the rock to get under the diff? I am thinking more of a skid plate to help protect the housing some more.

Any one have a picture of a skid plate for the diff? And, no I am not looking for the butt cheese "Truss" stuff that they sell. Thinking more along the lines of a cover with skid plate. Kinda form a U shape under the diff.

You might want to try Dynatrac I saw a prototype of a new steel cover out at Moab looked pretty trick. Beefy ribs on it , I think it was for a 60 not quite sure

Take your D60 cover, make a ring for it out of some 3/8" or similar. then plate the existing cover with 1/4" and weld it all up.

I've seen someone take a thick dana 44 diff cover, cut it in half and weld it to the bottom section of the whole, thick, dana 44 diff cover. He seems to bash it on about anything he can and it seems to be holding up. Maybe it would work the for the 60's as well?

This is a slightly shaved 44 w/ lower bolts moved up higher and protected.

Sure its not a huge axle and it is not flat, but it has lots of protection. 1/4" wrapped around the rear, and lined on the bottom and built up.

a skid plate for the housing is kinda redundant, you will be protecting 3/4" or thicker metal with thinner plate doesnt make any sense to me. If you want a smooth surface to slide over bust out the grinder and smooth out the pumpkin. Plenty of good examples of beefed up diff covers
