: 203 planetary as an OD??

Has anyone tried this? I haven't looked inside one yet. Are the gears helically cut or straight? Application is going to be oddball and probably "flame attractant". Input speed would be less than 1700 RPM and input torque could mathematically reach 1500ftlb or so. Other than keeping it oiled, anyone see problems?

Thanks,

Mark what are you thinking about doing now?

Wellllllll, Mikey... I said it was oddball.

I'll explain it to ya in person in a couple of days, but for now, I'm wondering if I can mix 6.9 liters of diesel V8, propane, 6200 lbs of 4x4, 1500 RPMs, deeep axle gears, dual x-cases, big tires, and end up with 70 MPH on the road. Crazy - yes; Stupid - probably; gotta-try-it factor --- Hell Yeah!

sounds kinky enough for me :D

why not just tall axle gears and deep reduction for off road?
3.54 or 3.08s with tall tires fit that bill

it's been done, look at the blazer from TTC '02, it had mog's and a reversed 203 in front of a 205 (doubler with the 203 turned around).

Thanks Scott. That's just what I've been looking for.

I don't think I can get enough reduction without low gears in the pigs. Tranny's a C6, first x-case is BW, second x-case is divorced 205. The way I figure it, low, low, low with that combo should get me at about 15:1 to the differentials. To me, that means diff gears need to be in the high 500s at the very least. I could get more reduction before the diffs, but I, like most peeps, is on a budget. :D

Could always go with a 3.1 WMS 203 and if thats not enough JB Conversions should have their 3.0 205 gears out by spring. With both your reduction before the axle gear would be 23:1 and your over all with 3.54 gears would be about 82:1 and with the auto and diesel that should be more than enough. I realize this isn't exacly "low budget" but figuring out a planetary OD won't be real cheap either unless you have access to a machine shop, and the desire for the trial and error.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize John was working on low gears for the 205. That sheds a whole different light on things. Don't know the exact low range ratio for the BW 1345, but figure it's around 2.6-2.7:1 and with a 3:1 in the 205, there wouldn't be need for overdrive anymore.

With 4.88 diff gears and 44 inch tires....

(5280x12)/(44x3.14) x 4.88 = 2238 RPMs at 60 MPH assuming no slip in the converter.

At 70, 2610 RPMs. That wouldn't be bad, if math is right and IF the thing would stay on the road at 70. :D

If you've got the wheelbase, what about throwing a brownie in there instead?

or better yet post a link as to where one finds these little gems or good info on features the different models possess
I can find 1241s but with no data to know what one is...

Brownie is a term used to refer to an auxiliary transmission commonly used in older medium duty trucks, many of which were built by Brown-Lipe (which may now be a part of Spicer?). They were available with a wide selection of over and underdrive ratio's.

Sorry, if I had one (with decent ratios), it'd be in my pu. I think I saw a mention of someone here that was putting one in the other day. Might try searching on the TDR (www.tdr1.com), I know the subject has come up there before.

While were (sorta) on the subject, does anyone with expierience in this are know how much more slop would be introduced into the drivetrain with one of these? Intuitively, I would think it would be more than a US Gear or GearVendors overdrive, but I don't know for sure.

That's my truck!

Yep, I've got a reverse NP203 in the Blazer. 'tswaylo, if you want to chat about it, you can email me at rbryce@exaxt.ca or phone me at 250-472-1808.
