as I have been looking for a hunting rifle I have run into some gun lingo that has me baffled.

long action = ?

short action ?

MOA= minutes of angle ? why such a name ? seems overly complicated considered few real world people go around measuring stuff in angles.

Long actions are used for calibers whose overall length is greater than 2.8 inches.

Short actions are used for calibers whose overall length is less than about 2.8 inches.

MOA is really pretty simple and coincides with shooting better than measuring things at distance in inches.

far...right

Short- 223, 308, 243 ect.

Long - 3006, 270, 7mm ect. Its the length of the cartridge.

Long action versus short action:

Certain cartridges are longer than others, and rifle manufacturers typically make two different length rifle actions to fit them.

.223, .308, .243, and the like all are generally in a short action rifle.
.30-06, .270, various winchester magnums, 8mm mauser, etc. are all in long actions. However, it is not entirely uncommon to find long action rifles chambered in a short action cartridge.

Short actions are often lighter, and since the bolt doesn't move as far, the action is faster to cycle.

I'm sure "the guys you hunt with" are a realistic representation of "real world people"... :flipoff2::flipoff2:

And you have the worst spelling ever.:laughing:

that silly MOA thing gets more and more important the farther away your target it..

As the target gets further and further away, that "1 inch at 100 yards deer gully gun" gun is now shooting groups of 2.5 inches... 5.0 inches... etc.

MOA really is the easiest way to measure the absolute accuracy of a firearm. It just uses big scary words to do it.

Basically it has to do with the trig involved in doing ballistic calculations for drop from muzzle to tgt. The alternative is degrees and thats way too coarse a measurement for the actual adjustment one is doing.

The alternative is decimal inch measurements like found on my Sharps scope mount windage and elevation adjustments.

That means pick a eye for the entry wound. You'll be about 1/2" off the center if its looking your way. :smokin:

However I dont think the head is gonna come off.

I fucked up and had a 8 point turn and look right at me just before pulling the shot. I hit the fucker right between the eyes at about 140 yards with a 180 grn nosler partition out of a .30-06.

Messy as fuck and his left antler fell off but the head was still attached. Well, a bag of skin with ears and a antler on it was attached. but it was still attached.

Note to self, no more neck shots.

Long actions are used for calibers whose overall length is greater than 2.8 inches.

Short actions are used for calibers whose overall length is less than about 2.8 inches.

Don't forget magnum-length action for old H&H stuff :D

My friend shot a fairly small deer directly in the nose when it was looking straight at him with a .300 WM and it removed everything from the entry point up for the length of the head. The carnage wasnt that gross but the fucking deerfly larva in the nasal cavity almost made me :barf: That was an educational experience.

did the same thing. Only mine was a spike and i didn't really care but it removed all brain matter, and split the skull in half. I have pictures someplace...

I was hunting with Dswhite once, I shot a doe with a pistol and while walking up to her another antlerless deer was standing about 30 yards off and started approaching us. We sat down and the other deer got to 10 yards and Dswhite said he was going to shoot it in the face(he was carrying a 270 Winchester)...BOOOM...dead deer. Looked like it had been hit with a softball going just shy of mach 1. Pretty wild, I have shot a lot of small game in the head but never any large game. The crumple factor is quite impressive.
