First, how is a spring rate measured?

I've got a pair of coil springs from an old bronco that I'd like to measure the spring rate of.

If I do the following,
1) Measure "at rest" length
2) Hop my skinny ass on top of it
3) Measure the compressed length

I've got a weight and an amount of compression. How do I get a spring rate from this info?
