can anyone tell me how much to grind off of the passenger side front diff to do the soa and can I use shims instead of turning the knucke to regain proper caster?

Well, AFAIK if you shim it your pinion will dive for the dirt

Yep, either deal with negative caster, or turn the knuckles.

A: obviously you know how to weld.
B: obviously you know how to use a grinder.

Grinding around the weld to twist the knuckle is easier than grinding the diff so just do it.

If you plan on doing it right, let us know if you have any questions. It's really pretty easy.

Just kep grinding till you see a hair line crack. Your first one could take a little while, if you take your time. The other one probably won't take half the time.

Trust me- DON"T SHIM IT! It will handle like a scalded dog:eek: My daughters SII was soa when we bought it and the axle was shimmed and I couldn't keep it on the road.

If you're going to stay std width, grind and turn the axle!

Actually, shimming is fine, as long as you build in enough caster when you clock the yokes to allow the reduction in caster caused by the shims. I built in about 13 degrees in the yokes, so my 7 degree shims I welded to my spring padsturned my caster back to 5 or 6 degrees, just about right.

one advantage of shims is that you can weld the driver side to the inside edge of the sping pad, so the center pin hole lines up with the springs better. 7 or 8 degree shims are thick enough that you only need to take a little off the head of the center pin so the center pin will not bottom out against the spring pad. Saves having to redrill the spring pad. Not that that is a big issue, but it saves a little time...

I think Mark was refering to shimming a stock axle, with NO cut-n-turn for with castor, or pinion angle.

As we all know, that either kills your u-joint angle, or kills your caster.

Welding the shim as we did was to facilitate the GM SOA and get the proper pinion angle for what we needed, we then did a cut-n-turn to set the caster. (yes, I know you know this pat, that was for the benifit of others that are reading this)

Thanks RW! The shim isn't a problem in itself if you do the other necessary mods.

Is that what we did? Too long ago, I don't remember. Just remember something about Kevin using a laser or something to cut the welds out, me wailing on the yokes to beat them off, and then the rest is just a blur....

gggrrrrrrrrr I still have to go thru the 345, install it and the tranny/case, install front axle and set angles, weld up the yokes and perches, install shafts front and rear and mount wheels, see what needs trimming and trim, install front and rear driveshafts, get tie rods built, clean/seal/install the gas tank, exhaust...... oh the hell with it. I could go on and on but it does seem like the light is at the end of the tunnel. It's been a year now but I'm pleased with what I've gotten done so far.

Hmmm, I've been posting on all the boards, but I guess a note on the mailing list wouldn't hurt either... ;)
