: Weekend Wheelin'
tsm1mt 09-22-2002, 11:04 PM No, it's not even a distant cousin of the 'Con, but we had our club run on Sunday. Mostly an easy day with a few hill climbs and lots of nice scenery.
So we decided it was time to take "Oscar" out for it's first trail ride, and I made Michelle drive her Scout most of the day, too. Tried out the new 3MP digi-cam, too.
I had to drive up the first two hill climbs - the second one was a good thing, badly rutted and about 2/3 up I bounced around, lost traction, applied more foot, and scrambled to the top.

Wheelin' in a stock 800 is a lot different vs. my SII. I need to check and make sure the bump stops are all still there - they were beat pretty hard, and the Mickey Thompsons still suck, even on Oscar... but Michelle learned a lot, gained a bunch of confidence, and she put the first scratch in Oscar when she drove through a tree. The two Broncos with us stopped and trimmed the fallen tree - but only after we drove through it. :D

After she saw the scratch in the hood, "I'm not even sure I want to paint it now - since it's just going to get scratched again."
:D :D I didn't tell her I was able to rub most of it out...

Not much for action shots.. since it was all just hill climbs - no rocks - and the photographer (me) wasn't up to running up the damn hills.. "Y'know, I remember why I bought a 4x4.. so I didn't have to walk up this crap.."
Then again, I could use the exercise.. hunting season starts soon - the camera's lighter than my '06. :D
Still, it was fun to play with the 800 stock for a bit. '75 304/closeT19 with 4.27 tapered D44 and D30, stock springs, one functional 10gal tank, 31x10.50 Mickey HPs.. made what would've been a boring trail fun and even challenging from time to time.
With the little tires, you can run 2nd gear in the close-box up most of the hills without any problems.
50mph was max speed to the trailhead though.. lifters start ticking excessively after that...

Now she'll probably be after me to get the new axles done for Tigger, so she can get the old SII 4.09 D44s and some lift, and she was talking about wanting one of the 392s...
Now, how many of your wives insisted on her own Scout, and then complained when she didn't get to wheel it 'cuz you always had to take "your" Scout?
:D

That is too cool, hope you know how rare that is and how lucky you are. My wife is cooler than most, as far as she doesn't mind when I work in the shop until 1:00 am, or go wheeling all weekend, but she has NO desire to ride on the trail again. Maybe I should have started her out on some easier trails;)
HarleyM 09-23-2002, 08:10 AM It's great when they are involved in what you are doing until they decide that they need their 4x4 built and yours is good enough for the present. My wife figures that since I am placeing in the mud runs in my class she needs hers to be bigger and faster. There goes the scout fund.:D :D

not that complaint.... yet.
I do hear the "when is MY scout going to be done?!?!?!"
:D, I really do need to start working on that... I want to drive it!!!

I GOT TO GO WHEELING, I GOT TO GO WHEELING!!!!!!!!!!
Scoutaholic and I when out Sunday and played around a bit, ran into a couple other guys we knew and played with them.
Nothing huge, just some trail running and getting out on the georguas weekend.
Had a couple minor "stucks", pulled a stollen/striped BII out of the middle of the trail, helped a couple of others out.
Were videoed twice by people out just enjoying the area in their stock rigs, families and such, with that "oh my god, how'd you DO that" look on their faces :D
Meet some nice folks, had fun.
Added a crease to my already creased front fender, and re-affirmed the dent on my rear quarter, also ended up pealing my door handle UP ;)... did I ever mention WA wheeling can be tight!.. trees and roots, and roots that throw you into the trees :D
lots of fun, I *may* even get out once more (option of next saturday) before the "big day"
harkinoff 09-23-2002, 09:07 AM I was going to part out my scout and wife told me the hell you are, you need to finish it, so get to work.

:D She's not sure when she's going to get the axles, springs, p/s, etc. done..
How was the Cleveland mud-bog, Harley? We were thinking of attending, but we had to go wheelin' yesterday, so we left Havre by 4pm on Saturday and headed home with the new parts-truck in tow.
Might have to plan this trip next year - the Havre Festival Days on Sat, watch the Derby, then head to Cleveland and get muddy.
Sully 09-23-2002, 09:45 AM Looks like a fun time Tom! Michelle have any single friends???? ;) I need one of those women who wants their own Scout!!
HarleyM 09-23-2002, 12:34 PM I took second out of four entries. It is funny as hell to beat V-8's in this game. This was the first year in four that anyone made the end of the pit. Not to much carnage, just that white bronco that was parked behind me at Cascade tearing out his steering sector. I'm still haveing trouble with the carb loading up. Was turning just under 4 grand at 150ft into the pit and it loaded up and killed it. As usual it was working fine here at the house. The wife cleared the pit. Now I get to put the sprinklers under everything and drag out the power washer. The best part about being second was that I wasn't beat by one of the big three. It was a late sixties 3/4 ton binder. :D :D

Uh oh, you going to be honeymooning on the 19th?
I am moving into my new house on the 17th. Hmmm, wife is going to love that. New house full of boxes, and I go out wheeling all day.... ;)
RustoleumWhite 09-23-2002, 01:13 PM and you were going to tell me you got the new house WHEN?!?!

Not to hijack the thread, but all this happened last week. Our house sold much faster than we expected, so we are made an offer on another, did the inspection Saturday, and turning in the form for allowances and such today...
Same area, just a little nicer house is all.

If you really want to get her attention remind her to "remember to fold your arms across your chest if we roll over"
I'm still catching it for that one.

I'm seriosly thinking of going to Naches to play on the rocks next weekend if anyone feels up to it. I heard lots of guys are going over. Hey Ben W. you out there? You gona be around?:)

I remember the day we said, "If the window implodes, close your eyes, OK?"
That didn't calm her one bit. :D
That was the day the passenger door and quarter panel died... ;)

ROFL. Gonna have to remind her of that crack next time we are out wheeling... :D

course, then the rock would be INSIDE the truck..... resting on Michelle's shoulder.... :D

Hmmm, good point. I have in fact often worried about that. Not so much rocks, most rocks that are large enough to intrude very far are too flat to get inside the door frame, but tree limbs, branches, etc, especially in the washes up here in the PNW. I'd hate to have this nice cage, only to be impaled by a stick that came in through the door... But then, aside from adding a side bar, which would be questionable at best in its effectiveness in stopping a 3inch branch from skewering me, I don't really see a solution. Aside from the obvious solution, don't roll it...
