I plan on putting a tbi 4.3 in a stretched '48 willys 4.3/th350/205/scout d44. Most of the swaps that I found while searching, have been '85 - '95 model 4.3. Is there a problem with using a 1996 vortec 4.3, from an s-10 blazer? Is it better to use a pre-1995? What computer would it be better for me to use (standard or Automatic)?
Thanks,
Rodney

TBI is like 87-93 I think. 94+ is the vortech. 95 has OBD1.5, 96+ is OBD2 and has a diffrent intake.
Ive owned a 91 and 95 blazers. The 95 runs stronger and I have never had an engine related problem with it.

I did find a 1 post (on another site) that said, the 1996-1998 is not a good choice, because of how sensitive the computer is (check engine light for everything). It said, they had nothing but problems after the swap. I would like to know if others have had he same type problems (with the 1996) or does this sound like an idividual problem?

I run a 97 model computer in my buggy with no problems. I opted to use a harness out of a 96 model S10 since it does nothave the large underhood fusebox built into it. I thinned out the harness for the stuff that wasn't needed. We did 2 buggies like this and have no problems. I used a 00' motor, and the other buggy used a 96' motor. Just like the older TBI model motors, there is only 3 or 4 wires that have to be hooked up. Constant fused power, switched power, ground, alternator light is about it. Everything else is plug and play.
The older TBI computers do not have to be programmed like the newer ones do. As long as you aren't using an electronically controlled transmission, you can use either computer auto or manual.

Thanks for the info. I have found a 1996 wrecked blazer, that I am trying to get for cheap. I just do not want to spend the money and then find out it is to much of a pain.
Thanks,

I have a wire harness out of a 91 chevy v8 pickup. If I strip this harness down, will it work on the 96 4.3 engine?
I also plan on using a th300 tranny.

The 91 harness is different than what you will need for the 96 motor. One is TBI, one is multiport. Sensors, intake, distributor, and more stuff is different. If you have all the stuff from the 96' model, I would just use it. I might still have the schematics for that 96' harness. Just cut out what you dont need.
