: Dirt floor Big Block FSJ on Tons

This build has been talked about for years, but has recently started picking up in the last few months. We finally have something going. Started out as a '78 Cherokee, that was so rotted out everything but the motor should have gone to the scrapyard. Anyways, we ended up with this (got a bit sawzaw happy one night).

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00789.jpg

Frame was junk, it's in the scrapyard. However, we happened to have a YJ frame laying around, so what the hell, why not. First we bolted the 63" chevy springs in the rear and bastard XJ leaves up front. Somehow, we came out with the perfect wheelbase to match the stock FSJ, right around 110".Cleaned all the brackets off of it. (yeah, there is an axle under it there, don't ask)

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00803.jpg

So as you can see above, at this point in time it had a matched 4.56 Chevy 60/14b, we planned on using a 258 at that point in time. But then, a stroke of luck and I scored these with a whole running F350 for $500:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00787.jpg
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00788.jpg

I only wanted the trans for my truck, so the project slightly changed direction for the better, with a HP60 and EFI 460, now this got us moving some more. The Ford was 4,10 gears, so we pulled the other 14b with 4.10's we had laying around out. :grinpimp:

You can't really tell from the pictures, but the 60 looked like it was under the ocean for a year, one of the swaybar brackets literally fell off. after a bit of cleaning and a lot of wire wheeling it didn't clean up all too bad. Yukon 35splines, Spicer non-greasables, welded carrier

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00830.jpg

Beings as the spring mount width on these era Ford 60's is wide as hell, we got to work on the outboarding, about 3" per side 1/4" plate

Best tool ever.

6 1" holes with a holesaw per side, it was a fun day.

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00823.jpg

Once that was almost finished, we needed to address the rear. So, we got some 2x4 3/16" box tube and extended it out about 17" to meet up with the 63's.

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00832.jpg
Fronts are done in this pic
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00842.jpg

Plated with 10ga. The stock frame is 2.5" wide, so we had to form it to the frame as we welded, so the welds are not continuous. Oh yeah, there's the 14b w/ GLO disc brake brackets, they're quite nice.

As you can see, we are not in any fancy shop. It's getting to be a jungle gym just to move around. Once the body isn't taking up a whole bay it will be nice.
We also have to deal with this
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00826.jpg

Yep, that's a swan, and it's really, really fawking annoying, it shits everywhere. (does anyone else have this problem?)

As of now we just need rotors and studs for the 14 bolt and it will roll. The front will have shackles mounted to the bumper, and in the rear we're probably going to go with Timmay's slider boxes. Hoping to have this done by the end of spring. Right now we're looking for ideas on how to mount the 460 in the frame, we measured and it will fit, but we need ideas for the mounts. Flame away :flipoff2:

For the engine mounts just fab something up with some poly bushings. Plating the frame is probably a good idea where the mounts are.

Thats pretty much what I was thinking for the motor mounts.

subscribed. I like all the Ford stuff.

For mounts, pull some late 70's or early 80's Bronco or F series frame mounts that had a 351 M or 400m. Then you can use a 460 conversion motor mount. 80's mounts are riveted in and pain to get out, the late 70's just unbolt. Another option would be frame mounts from a F250 that had a 460 but they will be riveted in too.

Bolt to your engine, lap with some .250 plate and gusset to frame and your done. That is how we put a 454 in a J20....very easy, and we can get stock motor mounts anywhere.

I actually kept the mounts from the truck it came out of, but the thing is they are different from the older 460's. Seems that the 87-91 used mounts with 2 studs, rather than the single stud in the older trucks. I like these mounts: http://www.landlproducts.com/details.aspx?cID=3&BP=0&scID=114&ItemID=1017 but I am not sure if the block mounting pattern was changed too. Also, I'm not convinced that the stockers will fit in the YJ frame, I don't think they will. We may just go the poly bushing route. Any suggestions on what thickness material to plate the frame with? We were thinking 10ga, cause we have it, that's one of the next steps.

Maybe if the damn thing wasn't in love with you it wouldn't come down all the time.

I have an idea for you. I will draw it up for you and post it tomorrow. It will be overkill but it does need to hold a big block so it will work. But i guess it depends on how much of a baller you want to be. :smokin:

That retard swan has a hard-on for my motorcycle too. I have no idea what its problem is.

If my asshole brother would give back the engine hoist we could get the motor off the ground and see what needs to be done.... then put it back down because you can't roll and engine hoist on stones... Fuck. I'll have to get him to bring it to me. We have the bushings for the front shackles, just need some 2" .25 wall dom and we've got shackle mounts. Oh yeah, front bumper needs to get done so we can mount the shackle hangers, then we're ready for the motor. Oh yeah, and Andy, we need 16 of them special studs.

Hey I'm selling that 4L that's sitting at my house... on your engine stand.... and of course than you can have it back. First $100 gets the engine and everything else that came with it. Besides, you're wasting a perfectly good beerclaw.

Definitely a pretty big one.:grinpimp: If I get time tommorrow I will make the plates for the engine block after I go pick the new toy. Also just to let the 99.9% of people looking at this know that this project is kinda of 50/50 between me and NO_BS. Also it is being built in my cluster of a shop.

Maybe ad a gusset on the sides and make the strap that goes over the frame bigger. But you get the idea. I know you two love hole saws.

Looks sweet, minus all the holes, dick. We'll have to take some measurements to see the width and such, but overall looks like a good idea. Mike's gonna try to get some motor side mounts made up tomorrow, then hopefully I'll have the hoist for Friday night and we can get some real measurements when the motor isn't buried in a 36" tire.

Were going to use a T18 and NP205 to start. Then hopefully at somepoint we will add a NP203 rangebox in front of the 205. Right now the funding is not there for the adapters and we need to find a ford 203.

I was in Harry's last weekend and there was a 97 f250 with a balljoint 60. It had a v8 that was gettin picked clean but the drivetrain was all there, even driveshafts. The 60 was missing the short side knuckle, both shafts, and the brakes... but like i said, balljoints. It might be picked clean by now but hey you never know.

How well does the millawauke metal saw work? The cuts loook nice and clean, you said you were cutting 3/16? How well does it do with 1/4? Do the blades last long? Might have to invest in one...

Stepmaker78

The saw works great for any type of plate or box tubing so far. I have cut up to 1/2 inch with it which gets kind of hot but it really is outstanding on 1/4 and 3/16. From what I have seen so far the blades last long time when they are not abused. It has been worth every penny to this point and I am very happy with it.

I have to be done for Nov. 7

As for updates, parts are stockpiling, kinda slow right now since this guy wants to be done in the next 2 weeks, spent last Satuday doing his beadlocks. We'll see what gets done tonight, if anything

Well, we got something done tonight:

it now can roll, finally:

Well, not really I only wish those tires were mine here's what it really looks like:
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00856.jpg

Once that was done, we moved onto the front. Realized that the springs could be about 2" more forward, but came up with this idea instead of changing what is already done. (Not fully welded because helmets pick perfect times to need a solar recharge)

Just for an update, the front suspension is DONE, the crossmember is welded on, angled, and capped, very nicely. Shackels are cut out and so are hangers with the bushings mounted to the front crossmember. Shit's kinda done. We just need bolts. Other than that we dragged it out with the Cummins and turned it around so next on the list is getting the 460 in the frame. (camera took a shit so you just have to wait for pics.)

Edit: anyone who wants to know about the saw.... I used it for the first time on sunday. It cuts the 1/4" plate like it's 1/4" plywood. It's very accurate, clean, and easy to use. If you don't have a Plasma, you need one, period.

Mocked up the steering a bit:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00879.jpg

It looks like we're going to run a tube from the passenger side axle tube inboard of the spring over to the drivers tube/inner C because the tube over there is literally only about 1.5" from the ubolt to C. It's really the only option we have other than going hi-steer, but that's not gonna happen. There may be more progress this weekend, if we can get an oil pan on Mike's CJ and brakes in my truck.

A tube huh? Make sure to leave enough room to get the diff cover off and for the r&p. Just in case you guys need to get in there and fix something.

It's going to be rough, any way we do it, the ram will have to be unbolted. Any ideas or suggestions on this will be useful. We are using the stock steering location and for the correct geometry, the arm of the ram is literally only a bit more than 1/4" from the cover, we just need to figure out a mounting system, it's in the works. Anyway, got some done this week:

Timmay's sliders came in and are all welded up:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00890.jpg
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00892-1.jpg

Got the body on the frame for the first fitting (no pics before the cutting):

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00896-1.jpg

Turned out to be a sawzall and grinder session until it ended up looking like this:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00899-1.jpg

Then we did a quick dove for an idea of the final look:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00901-1.jpg
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/DSC00902-1.jpg

And at this point I realize that nobody ended up taking pictures of it from the side, so that'll have to wait. The body is not mounted, just sitting there. We figured most of the rear was done, but it's not too hard to move so it may be off again. Next in line is the steering, then the motor.

A small update from this week is road salt sucks. We started to take some parts off of the 460 and found that the cylinder heads had actually rotted out around the exhaust manifold bolt holes. Needless to say the heads are pretty much trash. Then we dug deeper into the engine to find blown head gaskets and tons of sludge. That said I am going to look at an early high compression 460 this weekend that will save some time and money on a rebuild of this engine.

It's been a while but we finally have some worth wile updates. Here's the pictures of our original motor (and our helper right before it tried to bite me):

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/12-19-09/DSC00920.jpg

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/12-19-09/DSC00914.jpg

Closeup of the head: (not the greatest picture, but you can see how thin it is around the bolt hole)
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/12-19-09/DSC00913.jpg

Not sure if the oil was ever changed in this thing:
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/12-19-09/DSC00916.jpg

The cylinders also showed signs that not one, but both head gaskets were blown and the oil in the thing looks like cappuccino. So, we hit craigslist and came up with this, a '72 block with '68 heads, forged crank and rods, and a Holley 750 double pumper. The head and block combination raises the compression into the race fuel range, should be putting out at least 400hp when were done, probably more:
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/12-19-09/DSC00928.jpg

Little test fit. It'll be a bit tight, but not too bad:

Beings as now we have the motor, we decided we might as well get the transmission into the garage, however, it was in my truck, so I finally got to put the ZF5 in and have civilized shifts compared to the T18:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/12-19-09/DSC00932.jpg

Got pissed off and hacked the body a bit more, and decided to just run skins:
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/12-19-09/DSC00908.jpg

Then, it is on to the steering, beings as it will be 1000 times easier without the motor in the way. At first we weren't very sure what we were going to do, but it came out way better than either of us expected, and only took three days of work. We were worried about how to get it done without blocking the carrier and cover from being able to come off, beings as the ram needed to be right there, but I think we came up with a good solution:

All the pictures of it done ended up having no flash, so they kinda suck. I'll get better ones tomorrow. Hopefully we can keep a pace here, next to happen will be motor mounts/crossmember. We have the flywheel, but the clutch from my truck does not fit, which sucks, so we need to get a long style clutch. Anyone need a 12" clutch for an 80-91 Ford with a T18 with under 3000 miles on it?

Small update, got the frame side motor mounts done and tacked on, then started to clean up the motor a bit since it was warm enough to paint last weekend. I think they will be strong enough.

We also picked up a Hays pressure plate and flywheel for too cheap to pass up, just need a disc:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/01-06-10/j014.jpg

Surprisingly, the headers we got for free with the motor work for 6 out of 8 cylinders, the other two will need a bit of work:

And, we just had to do a quick test fit with the 39.5's we have laying around and the rest of the drivetrain, the 205 needs to be clocked so it's not such an anchor:

The timing isn't quite right yet, but it runs, and shoots sweet blue flames! For a but of tech, at first we had no oil pressure. Unable to figure this out we pulled the distributor to see that the shaft that drives the oil pump was not lined up, and was just sitting off center of where it should be to slide into the bottom of the distributor. After a while of pondering, we used some heavy grease to hold the shaft into the bottom of the distributor while we installed it, and it worked after a few tries, oil pressure is now 70PSI cold :grinpimp: . And a few more pictures of the sweetness:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/01-17-10/j017.jpg

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/01-17-10/j029.jpg

Also have our ram put back together with the stops in:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/01-17-10/j011.jpg

And before all this we did FINALLY get a working clutch and flywheel combo, so the trans is installed for good, here's a quick pic for reference:

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab230/MCL_Offroad/01-17-10/j009.jpg

Now we just need to plate the firewall a bit, close up some holes, and get the 205 clocked and installed then we can get the body on for good.

Duraspark II with MSD coil?

We did a TFI ignition upgrade to our Duraspark II by using a cap adapter, TFI coil, cap and rotor from a late 80s fuel injected truck. From what Ive read it jumps the voltage from 20,000 to 30,000. So really it has all the normal advantadges of dropping in a HEI upgrade and you dont have the extra cost of buying a distributer for your Motorcraft system.

I am very interested on the reliablilty of this setup. This weekend my DII with TFI coil had itermittent problems with the magnetic pickup in the dizzy. When hot, the resistance would open (infinite) and when it would cool it would settle to ~700 ohms and would start and run for a while. This is the second magnetic pickup in two years.

I am thinking of going back to the can style coil. Being stranded at 7000 feet and 4 feet of snow is not worth 10,000 volts.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Got a few things done recently, 205 drilled and tapped for clocking, and the mods to the extension housing, ended up using all 6 bolts again, as well as the locating pin. Drilled one hole in the adapter to reuse one of the original holes, as the notch in the 205 casting did not allow that bolt to be redrilled:

Kept moving along this week. Our KRC pump came, and we modified the stock Ford mounts to get it on the motor. Also got the hydroboost mounted up, and the master on it. And, since we are cheap and nobody sells what we need anyway, we made up our own reservoir for the system, it holds about 1.25qts, and has the ports where we need them. All we need is to mount the cooler, make the brake lines up (after the cutting brakes come in this week), and all the hydro lines and the system will be done:

This kinda crapped out. Neither of us have the money or time to support it anymore, plus we whould have restarted with a new chassis under it anyway. The motor will eventually end up in my Cj5. Maybe someday we will build a racer, but for now we are going back to our crawilng roots. For the record, so far I have stole no parts from it other than a bleeder screw from the front calipers.
