: Reloading "antique" wildcats.
DavidVanVorous 10-12-2009, 10:08 AM So now that we're back in the reload biz (finally... :shaking: :D )...
I was NOT particularly happy to find out that both Speer and Nosler had dropped both my Herretts from their reloading books (hence the antique remark in the title).
We've been busy playing with older wildcats, notably .357 Herrett.

Take a .375 Winchester case (tried .30-30 and its more of a PITA) size it down, trim it .25", then run the expander plug in the sizing die to get the final diameter...
Load up with a light load of Re-7 and a 180gr slug to fire form the case to the chamber and neck size thereafter... :D

Sturgell 10-12-2009, 10:51 AM One of these days I will get into wildcats. Its not really a wildcat anymore but if I can get this beater AR to shoot under a MOA I will rebarrel my 223 Remington 700 to 17 Fireball.

Sounds fun but theres lots of other sizes that can be made from .223 brass, its like .30-30 in that regard. I look at the wild cats as alternative use for stuff I already use... ;)
.223 + 7mm = 7mmTCU
.30-30 = .30 Herrett (simple neck down)
.357+ 30-30 = .357 Herrett though Ive found that .375 Win is easier to form consistently.
.30-06 = 8x57 but thats not really a wild cat just a reform... :D

I have wanted a sub caliber for a while and the 17 Mach IV and the 17 Fireball seem to be the best two choices to get a 20 grain bullet to 4k with under 20 grains of powder. So the decision is between those two.
Napoleon047 10-12-2009, 04:09 PM I know a couple guys who turn 30-30 into 218 bee
Redmist 10-12-2009, 07:01 PM I shoot IHMSA With a Home Brew 7mm/TCU load....
HOWEVER!!!!
I do have 20 boxes of FACTORY Federal 7/TCU cases sitting on my reloading bench. Not sure how much of this stuff they made....
Diesel Smoke 10-13-2009, 01:28 AM My parents were at a garage sale and found a copy of The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions 3rd edition It was all of 1 dollar, so they bought it not knowing what it was, just that I liked guns and books. I cannot believe the variety of wildcats there are out there and what they are built off of. I have sat and just paged through it, it is extremely interesting. Handloading a wildcat is a road I'd like to go down eventually.

Happen to have the same book as its real handy for dealing with "hard to get" cartridges, that's where my .30-06 to 8x57 came from. Both are "off the shelf rounds and guess what one pays for 8x57 brass (if you can find it) vs. the same quantity of 06.. ;)

or $26-35/20 unloaded premade cases when I can pay $14.2/20 for .375 Win brass and neck it down... :D

Show off :shaking::D
DavidVanVorous 10-14-2009, 07:33 AM Show off :shaking::D
Can't show off the Scout cuz its "in process" and not enough tech for the IH forum regardless so wildcats/saving a few $ on reloads are next best thing... :D
Ye really ought to consider getting the conversion book, seems one can make 6.5 Swede from .270 cases with a little annealing. Schmidt-Ruben is more of a PITA, apparently they can be made from Moisen cases but require a bit more machining (base apparently) than just a simple reform operation.

According to my book you anneal the case and rung into a 6.5x55 full length die with expander removed, then the base will fire form. So yeah, you'd find some use for it.

Yep, might add that it "seems" that that approach is a common modus operandi for a whole lot of conversions. I happen to draw the line at conversions requiring lathe work on the base, mostly cuz I dont have a lathe but also cuz thats a bit too much effort for a $1 part.
The catch I've run into with "upsizing" like with the .223 to 7mmTCU is that it'll crinkle the necks now and again so I don't plan on a 100% conversion of a batch of cases. I think I average about 2-3 lost/100 most times for various reasons...
