: Leaf Springs
ftoy507 10-12-2009, 06:15 PM I finally trashed the last set of All Pro springs I had. I am searching for a new set.
Current springs measure 46 3/8 front and 54 5/8 rear
There are some very close springs available. But I am trying to support the companies that support F toy.
My thought is to Use TGs 4" spring and run a rear shackle setup like zmans
http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=689311&page=5.
I think this will cover the additional length in the TG springs measuring 56 5/8.
Why do some people run this type of shackle set up? Click link and scroll to mid page to see rear shackle set up.

Is there a manufacturer that produces that rear shackle set up?

Check with Brett toolboxguy on here I think, he was making/selling those shackles. They work with longer springs, and prevent the spring from folding up, from backing into something, forcing the shackle forward, eventually inverting. Does that make sense?
ToolBox Guy 10-12-2009, 09:20 PM Brian is correct.
I still make that complete rear assembly that you see on Zmans car.
PM me and we'll discuss the details.
desertoy 10-13-2009, 09:41 AM Marlin and All Pro get their springs from the same place so you shold be able to get the exact same spring that you have from Marlin Crawler.
maveric 10-13-2009, 05:30 PM Sorry about hijacking the thread, but Brian's comment about inverting springs got me thinking about it... On hard vertical climbs, with front tires on top of obstacle, how is everyone keeping their front springs from pulling apart? A few weeks ago, on a few spots in Moab, I had the front end springs pulling apart enough that the front driveshaft pulled apart. I have already broken both the factory clamps on the rear of the springs, and replaced them with homemade ones. Should I just put another clamp on? Shorter shackle? Limit strap? (are limit straps legal)
I'm rebuilding the driveline with a longer slip (which will eliminate that problem), but I'm worried about bending my front springs.
Springs are AP 4"
Again, sorry for the hijack.

makes perfect sense. The shackle cannot swing forward and bend the spring because it stops when it hits the frame.

I know we've got 2 clamps on the rear end of the front springs. They are tight to the main leaf too.
maveric 10-14-2009, 08:23 AM Clamp style? Make your own, or buy them somewhere?

I just put in a piece material in the gap in the factory clamps and welded the spring clamps together so they cant break off (got the idea from Ftoy#48.) I also run a HP 3rd up front as well. I do have a bit of axle wrap goin on up front but that is because the axle is 1.5" forward of the spring pin. We did manage to bend a leaf when it hit a rock while we were competing at Rausch Creek this year and had to wrap it back with hose clamps to finish the comp. Just swapped it out for another leaf when we got back.
Wes,
Definitely get with Brett on the shackles... you damn copy cat! :flipoff2::flipoff2:
Brian Ellinger 10-14-2009, 09:27 AM Clamp style? Make your own, or buy them somewhere?
Ours are bolt style, just whipped em up, and welded to the stock clamps. This way they can be taken apart, but hold the leafs together nicely.

Now that I remember.. We just clamped them together and welded. no material needed, but there is a leaf or 2 missing from a 5" TG pack.

maveric 10-14-2009, 12:54 PM That will work great. Guess I needed a pic to get me thinking outside the box. Simple. Thanks

I will have a spy at the Gulches Rock Race to get pics of that trick anti wrap bar also. Your design is the best I have seen so far. Found the design on the net just not clear on the mounting.
I have actually searched every pic I can find of your car. Trying to find a good shot of it. You have done a good job keeping that one undercover. One day I will get a TG housing and duplicate your trac bar.
BUT NOT ANYMORE:flipoff2:
Whiten 10-25-2009, 06:36 AM Wes I got a pair if you still need them, Im takin the runner apart to build ftoy. Im goin to run the 4" marlin springs I have.
ftoy507 10-25-2009, 06:56 PM Thanks,
I picked up a nice set of TG 4" springs. They look great and will do an excellent job. Should be installed in a week or two. I will try to post pics an info after the install.
ftoy507 12-21-2009, 08:30 PM Got the springs installed today. Now I need some help tuning them.
The TG 4" pack provided a large amount of lift.
belly height went from 23." to 27.75"
rear bumper went from 31" to 35.25"
front bumper went from 26" to 30.40"
Any idea how many leaves to remove and which leave to remove. Belly height need to be lowered at least 3". I would like to see it closer to 4".

Wes....give me a call tomorrow and I will let you know how I set my f-toy up. We modified both front and rear spring packs.
Matt
Mr Roxy 12-21-2009, 11:25 PM Can you post that up, as I am running the TG 5" in the front of mine and want to lower it abit but still live up to the desert woops.
mtbrjon 12-23-2009, 06:33 AM I pretty sure Matt, Hobie, FT48, and others used the 5" packs with leafs removed ??.......
Mr Roxy 12-23-2009, 07:52 AM I am just curious to which leaves, I dont want to remove the wrong ones and have it fold up like a taco.
Jeep07 12-23-2009, 08:51 AM http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6940969&postcount=18
Hobie only removed the bottom leaf.
I removed 2 when I did mine. My leafs are super soft. I'm almost thinking next time I have them apart I will add 1 leaf back.

Matt,
Thanks for your never ending support. I will follow up with you after the holidays.
Wes
crawlerJunkie 01-04-2010, 08:48 PM so leaves... did you remove?
have some 3" tg springs that I want to install, but dont want to get too much taller.
ftoy507 01-05-2010, 07:43 PM I ended up removing the bottom leaf and the third leaf from the top. (The third from the top should be one leaf above the leaf with the clamp pinned on it???)
The springs are super flexy and almost the perfect ride height. After I abuse them for a few months they should be perfect.
MT4Runner 01-11-2010, 03:16 PM I'm going a bit taller on my FToy so I get more uptravel. Going 3.5" Davez springs up front, and 5" AP springs in the rear.
Need an idea on where to start:
When people are pulling leaves from a pack, what leaf are you usually pulling? Bottom? 3rd or 4th?

Are you going to do this before koh?
MT4Runner 01-11-2010, 06:14 PM Heh heh, yep, that's the plan.
....and I am leaving for a week tomorrow!!
(but I'm miles ahead of where I was before I left for KOH '09!!)

BTW I found this old post http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=669921&highlight=tg
Bottom 2 leafs removed on most WeRock Ftoys running TG 5" springs.
pmcfarland 01-31-2010, 03:53 AM removing 1st and 3rd from the front pack and bottom 2 out of the rear of TG 5s... whats the ride hight differnce ??? Would it be like running the stock 4s or 3s ?. Im looking for the most performance with not all the hight. or would running the 4s in this fashion be a good idea

Ended up bolting the 3.5" Davez springs in the rear and the 5" AP springs up front.
Pulled the 4th leaf out of the AP pack, and the 3rd leaf from the Davez pack (both 2nd from bottom).

Springs are in!! Need to move my shock tabs slightly and I'm ready! (I also built a tranny tunnel, rear floor, mortar box above the fuel tank for tool bags, tabbed the top for roof panel, and built side panels with speakers and 12V cig lighter plugs for my center console)! :bounce:

Sorry it took a little while to follow up.
The ride height difference before wheeling was less than an inch.
Im betting that after they settle a bit there will be a larger difference.
