: need help making my own track bar
sandaddik2 10-13-2009, 11:14 PM ok so i posted this in the cherokee section and chit chat and got yelled at and everyone seemed that talking shit was more important than helping me so can i please get some POSOTIVE feed back on my idea? thankyou
I have a stock jeep cherokee track bar that i want to cut then thread a tie rod end on the end like the rustys design so its adjustable. let me know if you think this is a good idea or not? thanks
1990JEEPXJ 10-14-2009, 12:25 AM personally i think youd be better off getting some DOM and just making your own. itll cost a little more, but i would think it would be more safe, and stronger.
sb643 10-14-2009, 12:39 AM Do it, and let us know how it works out.
God hates a coward. :smokin:
Any particular reason you need it to be adjustable? If you're going to the effort to custom fab, why not just make it right and be done with it?
sandaddik2 10-14-2009, 08:13 AM i have an 86 cherokee that will end up with about a 4 inch lift that my dad and i are working on for as cheap as possible and i have an extra track bar and tie rod ends laying around so i figured use that first.
Ive been thinking about just getting some DOM tube and doing it that way.
then maybe make a few and sell them to fund our xj project :)
I think im going to try it anyways when i get a tap and if its sketchy or doesnt work then im not losing much.
ohiozj 10-14-2009, 01:03 PM im pretty sure my old stock tie rod was solid steel, so you couldnt thread it.

you could if you drilled it out to tap it.... id rather just use dom tho
Rooney77 10-15-2009, 01:21 AM Given that this would locate your axle under your rig, I don't think I'd trust that to a tie rod end. If you are seriously considering selling things you've made, realize that if those parts fail and the person that purchased them from you was injured as a result of that failure, you can be held responsible. That's my 2 cents.
And FYI, you got yelled at in the other sections because you posted in the wrong sections. This is more of a newb topic. Not bashing, just letting you know. It took a lot of lurking on my part before I started posting in other areas.

I kinda figured it was cuz i posted in the wrong section
I ended up just buyin some 1' x .250 dom and i want to buy a tap that matches the threads on the tie rod so i will thread it strait into the pipe instead of welding in a threaded insert.
i know rough country and rustys use tie rod ends for theirs but i know what you mean about the liability.
i have a beater 86 xj that is gonna get a good beating when it gets its lift so im going to build a track bar to put on it and thrash on it before i sell them to anyone. im sure it will work. its not a new design but il test it to make sure so i dont hurt anyone.
ChrisHolmz 10-20-2009, 09:57 PM I just built a new track bar and got all the parts from ballistic fab for about $100 including the DOM
sandaddik2 02-17-2010, 08:34 AM i decided that the liability issue was too risky so i decided not to start making them.
i am going to college and needed something to make a few extra bucks to support my wheeling addiction so i started practicing making roof racks because there isnt as much liability as with building a track bar.
ive been sellin those makin money and making good stuff for people.
one of my racks was on the vision x lights display vehicle (jeep xj) at koh:D
flatblack51 02-17-2010, 11:40 AM a track bar is retarded easy! a piece of DOM and 2 hiem joints. knock it out it's easy and should take you about 30-40 mins. oh and try and make it as long and flat as possible. unless you have a drag link follow that plane.
sandaddik2 03-24-2010, 12:55 PM so i realized that rustys offroad stuff isnt really all that great. ill never buy another track bar with a tie rod end on it again. they suck.
after getting the rustys one and running it for a few miles about 12,000 the rod end is worn out, they are simple to make so ill never buy another one.
and for people searching the same thing, get a piece of dom, a rubber bushing from ballistic fab for one end and put a heim in the other using a grade 8 bolt,
dont waste your money buying one, especially from rustys
