: E-350 - the E stands for Expo, right?
Well, I just pulled the trigger on an E350.
Here's what it is:
2003 E350
auto transmission behind a 7.3 powerstroke with about 125k on the ticker
Quigley 4x4 conversion -- uses BW135x transfer case - forgot exactly
extended body
high top conversion - one of the aerodynamic looking ones, not a box.
looked to have an aftermarket exhaust
front end was tight
AC blew cold
no noticeable smoke from the oil filler when hot and running - so no blowboy
working on getting service records - carfax indicates 2 open recalls - CPS and something else that eludes me at the moment
no rust on the underbody - some spots where rocks were kicked up on the body
it's set up as a passenger van, but the PO added a new floor and put in 3 chairs and a table. all that will be removed and I'm going to go with a 3 benches (I've got 5 kids and this is going to be my DD/family truckster) and a DVD system to keep the kids quiet on the 9 hour drives back home that we do every 6ish weeks.
what it needs:
bench seats - probably sourced from www.car-part.com
DVD system - probably run a 120v system off an inverter, which I also need
second battery - the vans only come with one
after that, I'll start to figure out what else it/we need on our road trips. It will get some off-road use, but it'll be mostly mountain dirt roads here in Colorado. I'm thinking an ARB type fridge and some storage cubbies will be first on the list.
I hope to have some pictures later today - Dr. Mrs. Mo is in Maine right now with the camera - dealer said he'd send me some 3/4 angle shots and some interior shots.
ky scrambled 10-16-2009, 02:51 PM ohh hell yeah man! Im glad (jealous, envious, etc....) for you fawker :flipoff2:
ky scrambled 10-16-2009, 02:52 PM Is that the Dana 50 or 60 in the front of that?
The CPS is something you need to get taken care of ASAP. It will leave you stranded in a hurry.
dunno on the axle - will report on that when the rig is in hand.
CPS - yes, it's going to the ford dealer pretty much as soon as I pick it up.
jasonmt 10-16-2009, 03:17 PM You can go here to check for open recalls:
http://www.ford.com/owner-services/customer-support/recall-information
Guessing that besides the CPS you also would have a cruise control recall.
Keep in mind that there are airflow issues with the vans which is the reason that the engines are derated from the trucks so I would be careful if you are trying to stuff another battery under the hood.
maybe that's why I've seen a hood with intake scoops... and the other battery would go underneath probably.
thanks. Carfax gave the same recalls:

Congrats on a badass rig man.
I'm giving up a loaded 2wd 06 Honda Pilot that was pushing 70k miles for this. straight trade.
I talked to carmax, they offered 13k, 2 honda dealers wouldn't buy it outright, and a third small used car place would only give me 12.5k.
the 2wd Pilots aren't worth jack in Denver with winter coming up. One of the Honda places told me he'd give me 20k right there if it were AWD.
so, I guess I did pretty good.
Stumpalump 10-16-2009, 07:01 PM Every conversion I have seen in that year used a 60 front. My ex government rig is a 2002 E350 V10. It looks a lot like yours without the bumper and my roof may be a little taller. You got lucky to find one with that 7.3. They come detuned a little in the vans because of heat. They are a little noisy inside a van but it's by far the best engine drive train ever put in a 4x4 van. My government rig was a leaf sprung but yours looks like coils. You may have to tweak out death wobble but all the conversions available back then were good. The government put Rancho 9000's on it and it likes it set almost as stiff as they go. The other problem with the conversions is the track width. Most of the fronts are wider than the rear end. For some reason the vans came with a narrow rear end and the p/u front is wider. I spent $320 on good steel spacers for the rear and it made a big difference. As far as I know this is the only place to get them but he uses Timken steel and good American studs and bolts.http://www.wheeladapter.com/ Yours may have had spacers put on the rear to match your front bolt pattern if your lucky. Good luck with it. I love mine but my Jeep just sits now.

Stumpalump 10-18-2009, 09:01 AM Hey Mo,
Nice meeting you and thanks for stopping by to show off that rig. That thing is super clean. A lot of Haliburton rigs are worked to death but that appearing to be a computer van of some sort may have had something to do with it looking like new. The engine sounded great as you took off down the road. I think the only ding we found was a sticky door hinge. Seems like a common door issue and here is that thread I was telling you about:http://www.ford-forums.com/ford-econoline/38526-02-e250-hinged-side-cargo-door-hard-open.html

They have 25 of them waiting on a price form the owner. Hopefully he will not think they are made of gold.
I'm assuming you are going to work the PBB express shipping department for these if it happens.

if you have any, include a price on the 4 seat last row as well.
oh, and vinyl or cloth? either is fine, just curious.

Your :flipoff2: didn't work over on SMB....Here is what they are supposed to look like:flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2::flipo ff2::D If you want to put one of my 255/85 16 on your rig to see how it fits then I'm around until mid of next week then I'm gone to AZ for good. I think the coil sprung rigs allow the tire to move back in the wheel well more than the leaf sprung rigs. Mine also sits higher but I bet yours is more than tall enough to fit them. I had to mod my running boards to fit them. I love these tires on the van. Here is my write up with actual specs if you need them but like I said if you want to bolt one on then swing by. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28066
didn't figure it would work, but you'd know what I meant. :D
might take you up on that offer to try on the shoes. You tried those tires out in the snow yet?
and I'm junkyarding tomorrow - hunting down some seats. think I found some in Pueblo, but figured I'd check locally first.

The Krawlers on my XJ rule in the deep loose snow but on hard pack they arn't so great. I would think these KM2's are similar in snow or just a little better. AT's are better for hardpack for sure. With the distance you will be driving I think a mud tire is out but that size would be good for fuel milage and match your 4:10 gears perfect. My V10 is a little under geared (3.73) for the 33.5" tire but I'm waiting to see if the reduction in altitude I'm moving to helps it run good enough. Good luck on your junkyard hunt and let me know if you find any with cool bumpers.
98blacktj 10-25-2009, 12:49 PM He's knocked $100 of the price on the seats.... If you wait long enough he may part with them for my org offer. Was that price cheap enough for you?

I would say 99%+ (you should have seen my Exploders, F250 etc). I thought that bumper/Quigley conversion looked familiar.
I'm just off Founders by the way, Castle Oaks area.
Lance 10-26-2009, 01:15 PM Damn Mo, that thing is bad ass.
Seats have been acquired. someone locally converted passenger van to a motorcycle hauler and wanted to get rid of the seats, gray cloth from an 01. all 4 rows. $150. Thank you Craigslist.
brought the seats home and was removing some of the extraneous wiring left behind and was fixing the ducting to the rear HVAC system. removed the side paneling and found the original seat belts. :bounce:
should be in family truckster mode by Monday if things go well.

you know if it's bolted or welded on? i'm going to guess bolted. I want to get another and get the battery out from under the hood.
I'd run a set of Powerpoles up to the grill and modify a set of jumper cables for those times I need one.
65Chevy4x4 11-03-2009, 03:26 PM the battery box is bolted on, 2 tabs are slotted so you can slide it into place and it'll hold it while you put in the toher bolts. Also it has cable to hang the battery by when it's unbolted. Nice boxes, ford sells them as they sometimes get rotted out since there isn't any drain holes in them.
cool - hoping to hit the junkyard again this weekend

it's at the ford dealer right not getting the CMP and ABS recalls taken care of. I also noticed a bit of an engine speed related rattle that they're going to be checking out. I'm hoping that it's nothing.
Then this weekend, it's getting the seats installed and seeing if I need to rebuild the transfer case.
or not. :(
recalls are done. motor noise is as yet undiagnosed. suspects are a "balance rod" or something in the lower end.

trying to track down an electrical gremlin currently. (get it? currently? electrical problem?... ahhh yeah.
stupid front blower motor doesn't blow. rear works fine. fuse is good - even swapped it with the rear one. put in new blower and blower resistor. picking up speed selector switch tomorrow. If that doesn't do it- it's got to be a ground - and finding that will SUCK.
also, I picked up my AV system for the back. 19" Visio flatscreen LCD and a home theater in a box from best buy. Need to get a couple power inverters and a wall mount and get that bad boy hooked up.

Stonecoast 12-11-2009, 06:10 AM My next door neighbor bought a used 02-04(?) E-350 w/the diesel. It has a combination of Salem-Kroger, Sportsmobile & Quigley drivetrain & suspension parts. I've got to write down all the parts and pieces the's got on the rig, but it's a helluva all terrain family truckster. It has three rows of leather captain's chairs and enough space in the back for the two huge dogs they have.
Last winter, they drove it from Maine to Oaxaca & Zipolite Mexico for three weeks. Had it following washes trying to find a waterfall. Once it got too rough, they "launched" the Rokon off the bumper carrier and kept exploring with that.
They took it to Florida a couple weeks ago and are headed to Penna just before Christmas.
It has it's issues, mostly electrical gremlins and currently an oil leak from the aftermarket filtration system, but considering how much it gets driven, it's doing well.
These pics are just after he got it home two years ago, since then he's lost the pull-out awning (crappy construction and mount system from Sportsmobile) and added an aluminum roof rack mounted to the poptop and sporting 360 degree lighting. I'll get a couple more pics this afternoon.

Stumpalump 12-11-2009, 04:14 PM Saweeeet Rokon! The Yamaha YF200R1 Rokon conversion that bumps the power to 12.5 HP and drops right in place of the anemic Kohler was developed by me. I keep them built and ready for a simple drop in replacement if you want that thing to run. My E350 4x4 and Rokon 2x2 are both 2002. I luv them both and if you want a deal on an engine then you got it.
What year is that bike? I think that color is rare and it looks great.
Stonecoast 12-12-2009, 10:12 AM the Rokon was bought new in 06 or 07 I believe. I doubt the color is very rare, but the engine could always use more power. I just took it out for a little tour last weekend and ended up having to tear apart the carburetor in a friends yard five miles from home using a leatherman and a 1/2 wrench. Still needs a complete cleaning but got me home with 2x the power of the trip out.
heater is fixed.
not sure what I did, but it works now. had a new dash switch from Napa, but it was the wrong one. returned it, and started trouble shooting.
hot wired the new fan motor - worked.
meter to the new resistor - seemed a-ok.
put old switch back in.
set it to heat - turned the fan switch and the fan started to work. :bounce:
Tomorrow, it's put the dash back together, new batteries, seats mounted up and start putting in the AV system.
Need to figure out why the radio doesn't work, but it's not a priority - might just put in a new one.
oh, and I think one of those Rokons would be a perfect addition mounted on the front bumper.
and finally, the interior is set up to do what I intended it to do. Haul the fam.
A few pics should be pretty self sufficient.
something that struck me as odd was that this extended body is not set up from teh factory as a 15 passenger.
I used the factory mounting holes for the seat brackets - which is a complete PITA to do when you're hunting them down blind through a sheet of plywood. I was able to drill through from the bottom to find a few of the holes, but it took a good couple hours to just put the brackets in.
Next weekend is putting in the AV system. Need to hit up monoprice.com for a flatscreen wallmount.
It goes into daily driver service tomorrow. Need to shake out any last bugs the next couple weeks before the 8 hour drive to Grandma's for Christmas.
Stonecoast 12-13-2009, 08:41 PM got the pics from the mexico trip & the set up...

well, I filled the tank up when I first got it. Used it around town, running to junk yards and such.
282 miles of mixed highway and city driving. filled it up again today and came in at about 22 gallons (have to check the receipt to be sure)
12.8 mpg basically empty.
was hoping for 14-15, but I'll take it.

OUCH!!!
my 85 2wd..non Overdrive non turbo got 14...something might be wrong...
get a few more tankfulls thru her and see what it does...
I think what's wrong is the 4.10 gears with too short a tire.
I'm going to keep an eye open for a Gear Vendor overdrive too.
yotasmob 12-17-2009, 05:48 PM Nice. I grew quite partial to these vans after driving them a bunch at my last job. Always thought it would be sweet to convert or buy a converted 4x4 and do something like this. Also one of my coworkers has that same front bumper on his Dodge, however I find it suits the Van much better.
65Chevy4x4 12-18-2009, 01:11 PM 12.8 is about right, with just freeway my 01 e350 will get 16 but around town and stuff it's 13-14. Get a programmer and it helps, used a friends and averaged 16mpg around town/freeway.
wanderer-RRORC 12-18-2009, 01:43 PM I have 3.73 and she is supposed to have 29in tires...I run 32in tires (acutal measurements)...and got 14/15 but didnt tow so great...(not adjusted for actual milage driven just odometer milage/galons used...so its probably better due to it being 5mph off at 55..)
towing it would get 12...but kinda gutless...
hence the new injectors that are on order...
and the new injection pump that needs to be ordered...theyre both kinda whooped...but the injectors are origonal (no recipts for new ones)..at 145K..and the pump changed 75K ago...at 75K...so its due..
im expecting 19mpg with that and the turbo..(and nobody thinks thats strange)...
before they changed to ULSD the log-books in the van indicated she used to get 17mpg...
so when I run WVO it probably gets close..(more BTU's in WVO than ULSD...and YES you can blend it in these fueltanks without heaters/hoses/crap and the engine will LOVE you for it!!...no more than 75% WVO when the nighttime temps are over 50*...no more than 50% at 35*..25% at 25*..etc..
65Chevy4x4 12-18-2009, 02:50 PM whats WVO. and how often do the injector pumps need to be changed on these things???

filled 'er up again.
308 miles / 22 gallons to fill = 14mpg
I'm learning to be patient with the acceleration from a stop.
any recommendations on a tuner? there's so many options... but they're all listed for the trucks and not vans. how will the lack of an intercooler impact it?
If it would add 2mpg, getting me to 16mpg, that would save me about 3 gallons per fill. at $2.50, that's $7.50 a fillup. If I fill it every 2 weeks (which would be low), that would be almost $200 a year, or $400 if I fill it every week.

basline on the older non powerstrokes is around 75K..
but anytime its not performing to par you can turn the fuel up...once its maxed..and yer still not happy...its rebuild time!!:D
rpenner54 12-19-2009, 08:21 AM DP-Tuner http://www.dp-tuner.com/ it's what I have, love it. They can tune for your app I am sure. Check out http://www.coloradopowerstrokeclub.com/ since your here in Colorado.
checking out DP tuners and joined the coloradopowerstrokeclub.com as arz
MattS 12-21-2009, 02:07 PM Might try adding some ashless 2 stroke to each fillup. I use the super tech stuff at walmart. It's about $8 a gallon. I use a little less that 1oz/gal.
This ULSD is crap. IMHO

mrboyle 12-21-2009, 08:20 PM If you are still planning to run a 120v inverter for your DVD system, make sure you keep a spare so you can swap them out. I've installed several in fleet vehicles and they only seem to last 4-6 months before they fail. Granted, they run them 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week. But you wouldn't want to loose the entertainment system half way through the trip to grandma's. :D

half way to grandma's is North Platte NE, they have a walmart. :D

Instead of. Even when it was -4 last week I was running reg diesel (not winter mix) and the 2 stroke oil. No gelling issues at all. The 7.3's are harder starting in the cold that the cummins. My brothers was a bitch last year. Just keep it plugged in.
good deal. it's cheaper than the regular diesel additives too.
TJVigilante 12-29-2009, 02:25 PM hey Mo....could you post up some pictures of the undercarriage? Thanks. :D
65Chevy4x4 01-07-2010, 12:16 PM Just got back from Johnson Valley towing my truck and a shit load of stuff, 16,200 lbs for the van and truck/trailer and I got 11.5 mpg there and 11.8mpg back going 60mph.

go 70. The 7.3's like the RPMs.
BillyBronco 01-07-2010, 01:03 PM go 70. The 7.3's like the RPMs.
Not mine. At 60mph unloaded I get 20mpg rpms around 1750 (I think)
at 65mph unloaded I get 18mpg rpms around 1900
at 70mph unloaded I get 17mpg rpms around 2050
at 75mph unloaded I get 15mpg rpms around 2150
at 80mph unloaded I get <15mpg rpms around 2300
This is all on flat ground on a completely stock F250 7.3L superduty 4x4.
stupid E-vans dont' have a tach.
gotta scrounge up an F dash cluster and swap it out.
saline 01-07-2010, 05:21 PM My 04 E350 has a tach. Might be an easy swap.

IDI's like RPMs...the powerstroke 7.3's DONT so much...
My 04 E350 has a tach. Might be an easy swap.
it is. it's just another thing to do.
like I need that.
this weekend I get to track down a bearing squeel. reasonably confident it's the front right unit bearing. Hoping the spindle bearing inside just needs grease and that teh outer shaft isn't fooked.
edit: I'll get the pics then. It'll already be up on jacksands.
The Adam Blaster 01-08-2010, 07:21 AM How was the trip at Christmas?
Do you pull better mpg on the highway?
good and bad. had a great time. but we didn't make it to Grandma's due to fuel gelling issues. which was a good thing as everyone who did make it there got the stomach flu.
forgot to write down milage/gallons fuel, so I have no idea on milage. But since almost nobody made it to grandma's, we're all converging on them again last weekend in jan. I'll make sure to track milage then.
IDASHO 01-08-2010, 05:17 PM IDI's like RPMs...the powerstroke 7.3's DONT so much...
Bingo.
I can squeeze 20mpg on the HWY in my'96 if I keep the RPMs below 1800 or so.
Thats 55-60MPH.
Above that, and she really starts to guzzle.
