Well, after mangling my eom 1"solid tie rod, sleeved with 1.25x.120 this weekend, I made a new tie rod and drag link today out of 1.25"x.310 cromoly tube. Anybody use this stuff for steering linkages? After I got the material I called a local circle tracker that uses quite a lot of cm and he swears by it. So Now that I'm done (!) I'm looking for real world rock experience with it. I'll give it a shakedown this coming weekend, but figured I'd ask.

Here's the initial bend...it only got worse from there. It actually looked like an "A" with the peak of the A ending up above the drag link!

A couple of weeks ago I made a couple of tie rods 1.25" OD, .313 wall DOM, held the weight of my Jeep on a rock just fine. I am sure you will be just fine with the chro-mo. :D

i am running 1.25 4130 i forget the wall but it was really thick had to bore it out to fit ends to weld in to hold 3/4 rod end,,looks about same as picture.. so far to good,, dont think there have been any direct hits,, with my histeer is pretty much outta the way, i figure i will break a rod end before bending the rod,, but im not so sure if that is a good thing.. time will tell

I *may* have been getting it, but I'm not sure. !!

I think refusing to back up is what did it in! The way the sleeve material looks- it appears that the solid tie rod in the center actually broke and the sleeve kept it together.

Yep, forgot to state, but this is also 4130. I really think the tre's will now be the weak link, but I'll find out soon!

Where did you get it, and how much? Available online? Any DOM available online? I know Spidertrax has some, but nothing for a decent tie-rod with tapping the ends for a 7/8" thread.

I got it from a friend- it's very expensive!
I did have to bore it out and tap it for the 7/8x18 r & l threads.
Mark- No hi-steer for me until I get my new knuckles figured out so I can NOT break them. Breaking a steering knuckle on the trail sucks and I don't enjoy the thought of carrying them as spares!

I'm running 1.25" solid Chro-mo. I bent mine. It's currently bowed about 1" in the middle. I got on a tree/stump and it was deflected about 8" before the spotter said "uh....backup", so a 1" bend is pretty good spring back. :)

Ox, call Phil at Speed Palace at 856-351-9500. He is in southern NJ and I was quoted a price of $63 for a 10' section of 1 1/2" 4130. I don't know if that is decent enough, but he is in the same state atleast. Good luck.

That's not a bad price. I can get pretty much anything DOM or solid at decent prices. I can also tap the ends too for basic stuff. You can ship up to 8 feet by UPS. Let me know if I can help anyone out for a few extra bucks. I've made up a number of steering setups for guys I know. Drop me a PM or email

BroncoRob, I'm also in Charlotte and need some material to make some heavy steering parts for my Rover. Have a number I can call you at?
