: Off road winter driving.
Phily 10-19-2009, 01:54 PM For inclimate weather what would do better ON ROAD, in extremely snowy areas.
1. 1985 VW Golf Diesel w/ Firestone Winterforce 175-70r13
or
2. 2000 Dodge Dak 2wd w/ 2 rear Super Swamper TSL Radials 215-85r15
Phily 10-19-2009, 02:06 PM Completely open difs in both.
mac67 10-19-2009, 02:14 PM The Dodge sounds like more fun!
jperecko 10-19-2009, 02:47 PM I think the dodge but it will need some ballast in the back
250k318is 10-19-2009, 03:30 PM 2wd pickups suck in the snow i wish id buy a fwd car as a beater but no room to store one. and the swampers will probably make it even worst in the snow they will act like surf boards. i drove my old Toyota with swampers and fully locked in the snow and it was scary at any speed above a crawl.
Rubicrawler 10-19-2009, 04:09 PM I'd flog the Golf diesel! I had a gas version back in the day and it worked pretty well the few times I had it in the snow & ice.
jeeplt1 10-19-2009, 04:39 PM the vw for sure. ive owned both a vw and a dakota and driven both in snow. the dakota will offer you more ground clearance when the snows built up butwith a vw you are less likely to spin out due to traction loss.
but thats my preference
bbagwell 10-19-2009, 06:27 PM VW for sure. 2wd pick ups suck balls in the snow.
Phily 10-20-2009, 08:12 AM Any tire recommendations for the VW Golf Diesel other than the Winterforces? L
250k318is 10-20-2009, 01:05 PM skiny ones with good tread winter tires would help more too.
VW.
We used to buy an import FWD every year for getting us up the mountians to go snowboarding...they get the job done and cheap on fuel. We used to buy cheapo studdable snowies and get them studded.

OffRoad 10-21-2009, 12:43 AM go with the vee dub. i've driven on winterforce tires and they are great.
Snowbird13 10-21-2009, 10:00 AM How big are you? Driving an 85 vw sucks for big guys. I would go with the pickup, but with a snow tire, not a swamper. Also, put about 400 lbs of snadbags in the ass end of it.

5'12"
It'll have ballast. I just put semi-truck tires in the back.
I drive around both, I got the dak cus it's a truck and it was cheap because of how much rust was on it. I got the VW because it was also cheap and is also covered in rust. I currently have no idea what it's like to own a car or truck with paint on it. :mad3:
Jeep07 10-25-2009, 07:56 PM 5'12"
:laughing::laughing:
5' 12" is the new 6'
hah
W.O.T. 10-26-2009, 06:07 PM depending on how in tune the VW is, condition of glow plugs, and if it has a block heater or not the vw could be a hard cold starter. but the 50-60mpg and lack of chronic oversteer would make it my choice.
Cheepin 10-26-2009, 07:46 PM I voted for the VW.Get rid of the swampers on the dodge and get some studded winter tires for the rear it will do alright.
